Needing some advice purlease

Ds has tonsils out on Tuesday so on day 5 post op. He is still needing regular paracetamol & ibuprofen. He developed earache on day 2 and it is still waking him up in the night.

He was prescribed amoxocillin and is on day 3 of them. THis is because he was running temperature, very painful throat and stinky breath.

He still high temperature, was 37.8 but had paractemol and now temp is 37.5. He is hardly eating and drinking and cries as it hurts too much to swallow.

Managed to get him to have a weetabix soaked in milk and 2 small glasses of yoghurt drink today (he is refusing water). Have also managed to get him to have a small pot of jelly. All this resulted in him in tears. I called the ENT dept and spoke to dr about his ears and she said to see how he is tomorrow.

He now has a nosebleed (not through picking it at all), managed to stop bleeding.

He is at times quite bright but is definately not himself. Prior to op he had an amazing appetite and food has seriously never ever been a problem.

I know he will recover but just thought that by now he would be eating/drinking. I guess the infection is slowing his recovery but I feel quite helpless and at a loss as to how to help him.

Hi Awen, I'm new to this thread..I hope your little boy is starting to feel abit better..what a nigtmare for you...My little boy is 2.8 and having his tonsils/adenoids out next week..I have to admit after reading what you are going through, to be having second thoughts. I've read other threads that say their children were fine but I've also read that its a 'messy' procedure that can lead to what your little boy is going through..my thoughts are with you, same time I'm reconsidering !

MamaMaiasaura · 03/10/2007 22:12

i can understand that dad12. Ds has an infection on top of post op tho, hence antibiotics and high temp. despite all this i am glad they are out as with them he was frequently very poorly including having scarlet fever.

Hi Awen, thxs for reply..how is your little boy today? really hope he is feeling better. Showed thread to my wife y'day (no internet at home so she leaves it to me to do the mumsnet-mums-for-advice thing at work)she was a bit concerned too..we've heard quite a few stories now of post-op complications, fever, bleeding, ear-ache, pain...bit grim really..makes us start thinking is it better to leave it...

MamaMaiasaura · 04/10/2007 12:35

Ds eaten breakfast this morning and drank without any tears. HE also went and got himself a drink because he felt thirsty first time in a week. He is still running a slight temp - 37.7c = 99.9f. He is brighter in himself too. NO waking me up in the night for pain relief either.

Dad12 - you and your wife have to decide what is best for your ds with the consultant. 2 years old is very young, but also i think recovery time better the younger they are. My ds is 7. They dont suggest tonsillectomonies lightly and only if the think is really necessary. The fact that my ds was getting so poorly with tonsils I think it was best for him to have them out.

Hi there
Hope your poor DS is finally on the mend.
Sorry to hijack a bit but:
Dad12 - we are in exactly the same boat as you are with our DD.
She was booked in for next Wed to have tonsils and adenoids out, but my hubby has to go away for work so i postponed it.
The new date is 14th Nov.
Why is your little one having them all out?
Our DD has such enormous tonsils that when there is nothing wrong with them, they block over 75% of her airway, so whenever she gets a cold or anything, they swell up making eating drinking etc hard.
It wakes her at night too as they flap back and block her windpipe so she sort of chokes, wakes herself up, goes back to sleep til it happens again.
This thread has made me even more scared than before
What are you going to do????
