I mentioned that his eyes looked yellow when I went there earlier, but because the test yesterday came back borderline they weren't too worried, but the nurse asked them to redo the test today and the results are too high. He has been put back into an incubator and is recieving phototherapy. My poor baby

So sorry to hear this SGC, best wishes to all of you xx

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2007 18:24

Yes - but it's so common with prem babies, it's not really a problem. DS2 had to be in the fish tank with the lights and I hated every minute of it, though, so I know how you must be feeling!

Hulababy · 29/09/2007 18:27

So sorry to hear that. Hope he is out of it soon.

Mercy · 29/09/2007 18:28

Oh, poor both of you

dd had jaundice and had to have phototherapy for 18 hours or so.

Hang on in there SGK.

Nbg · 29/09/2007 18:29

Awww poor little man.

I'm sure he'll be fighting fit in no time sparkly.

Will this prolong his stay in hospital?

flamingtoaster · 29/09/2007 18:42

Poor little guy - hope he's out of the incubator again soon.

callmeovercautious · 29/09/2007 18:48

Poor little guy Hope the therapy works quickly so he can be out and about again! Shame he can't manage loads of that spare milk to flush it through!

tissy · 29/09/2007 18:55

my 29 week prem niece had it too, sorted after a couple of days on the sunbed .

Not usually serious, don't worry

orangehead · 29/09/2007 18:56

ah, hope he better soon

chatee · 29/09/2007 18:59

my 33 weeker too had this..borderline one day and back in the 'goldfish bowl' the next day
horrible as it happens for you(and more emotions going everywhere)but the babes don't notice- just lie there and bask...bless

hope he is soon out and having cuddles with his Mum
xx

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 19:14

will i be able to feed him tomorrow? (or at least try to feed him lol) or will he not be allowed out of the incubator?

OP posts:
chatee · 29/09/2007 19:17

they let my dd out (for a little try at feeding) with a jaundice board stuck up her back(don't know the techy term)inside her clothes, she was like a little glowing neon.....

hairycaterpillar · 29/09/2007 19:24

oh how frustrating for you. Both my DS's had jaundice (not prems but have inherited blood disorder). They were both under phototherapy for around 5 days. The more they are under the lights the quicker the jaundice level falls... I'm sure they will let you feed him. I also used a "billie blanket" (i think thats what chatee is referring to) whilst out of the main lamp for feeding.

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 19:25

lol at glowing neon I hope I can get him out tomorrow.

ds1 (born at 37 weeks whopping 7lbs 11oz) had severe and prlonged jaundice......had triple phototherapy in scbu for weeks, drip fed, nearly had a transfusion now a happy, bright, LOUD 5 year old
xxx

Mhamai · 29/09/2007 19:28

Sorry to hear that sparkly, hope the you have hi out soon.

Mhamai · 29/09/2007 19:28

him.

popsycal · 29/09/2007 19:28

you should be able to feed him - they may put him on a light pad while you do and insist you put him back straight away...feed feed feed feed feed

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 19:30

he isn;t interested in the breast yet, but am trying every day

OP posts:
popsycal · 29/09/2007 19:31

keep going.......

my ds1 was bright orange - like the tango advert man. No joke. Thinking of your little one

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 29/09/2007 19:36

poor callum. dd3 had the worst jaundice of my 3, she was very yellow.

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 20:30

I knew he had it though, his eyes are very yellow, and his skin looks odd, but it was only today that the levels went high enough to need phototherapy

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2007 20:32

Apologies if you know this, but I was told this by my midwife, who said it was 'old wives advice' - once you get him out of the fish tank (and hopefully home) put him down to sleep wherever there's natural light/sunshine. This was what they used to do in the years before phototherapy.

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 20:35

Ds1 was slightly jaundice at birth, and I was told to put him in a sunny place, ever tried to find a sunny place in december?? lol

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSweden · 29/09/2007 20:37

...SGK, it is relatively minor in the scheme of things.

It would be unusual if he didn't have to have phototherapy at 33wks

It could explain why he isn't interested in feeding and may be more interested in a couple of days after the phototherapy

He will get there, he will be home with you soon
