Sinus problems and permanent runny nose :(

blossomhill · 13/10/2004 11:12

Just before dd was born (5 years ago) I had a really bad sinus infection. Obviously as I was pregnant I didn't take anything and it got quite bad. The problem is I have suffered since with a constant blocked nose and it runs ALL the time. I have tried anti-biotics, some herbal remedies, steroid sprays and even been to see an ENT specialist. It is really beginning to interfere with my life and I am constantly blowing my nose.
Has anyone else had this? Any advice would be really appreciated as it is really inetrfering with my life and I need to something!
Thanks BH

my MIl was like this until she had polyps(sp?) removed from the top of her nose.
what did the specialist say?

Kayleigh · 13/10/2004 11:28

blossomhill, I have always had sinus/nasal problems. Some days I am fine but on others, like you, my nose runs continuously. I had a deviated septum operated on which was meant to cure some symptoms, but didn't.
I take antihistimines every day. But same days my nose still runs. I find this is more likely to be set off by sitting next to a smoker on the train, or reading certain newpspapers (newsprint). So my symptoms are more allergy related, than sinus related even though I suffer from sinusitis frequently as well.

Do you think you may be allergic ?

blossomhill · 13/10/2004 12:32

Possibly Kayleigh! I always had problems with my nose when I was a child as well. My dad has also had lots of nose problems and I wonder if it's heredietary! The only thing is it also runs down my throat (sorry if you are eating lucnh) does it do that to you?

i have a sim problem. ive only just gone to the doctors about it though as i was pregnant.
2 yrs ago i had sinus infection and since then lost my sense of smell. since having dd 19 wks ago ive suffered constant runny nose but only at night. gp has given me a spray to use and will then refer me. he thinks its perenial rhinitus which means year round allergy or the membranes in my nose have been damaged.

blossomhill · 13/10/2004 12:44

kbaby that sounds exactly like what I have got. My mouth feels dry all of the time too and I hate it when it runs down my throat. It tastes awful.
It is affecting me so much that Ihave stopped reading in ds's school. I was so embarrassed as my nose was just running the whole time. I hate it!

blossomhill, I believe dairy products can make sinusitis worse especially cheese. Is it worth trying to reduce your intake of these?

Kayleigh · 13/10/2004 17:18

blossomhill, yes it runs down my throat. And noses run in our family too IYKWIM My dad also suffers terribly.

blossomhill · 13/10/2004 18:38

Is it constant Kayleigh? As mine is and I can taste it. It is so unpleasant, I hate it!

It is constant on days when my nose is runny. And yes I can taste it now you mention it. But I have got so used to it and have had it so long I guess I don't even think about it that much. It's just something i live with.

I was so pleased when i was having the operation. i thought it would sort everything out. To say it was unpleasant is an understatement, and I had complications after. So to have no improvement after that was really upsetting. I won't go through anything like that again - so i basically live with it.

Please try antihistamines - I think you should rule out allergies before you try anything else.

blossomhill · 13/10/2004 20:24

Kayleigh - which antihistamines should I try? I have tried a couple of sprays and nothing! Thanks BH

I get Clarityn from the doctor as I take it year round, so I only pay for a prescription every three months. You can buy it over the counter at boots but it works out expensive if you are going to be using it a lot. Maybe try for 2 weeks and if you notice a difference go and see your GP.

blossomhill · 14/10/2004 17:13

Thanks Kayleigh

Did you notice a huge improvement on them. Are there any side effects?

Kayleigh - I see what you mean by expensive!!!!!!! £5 for 7 tablets. TBH anything is worth a try and I would pay £20 if I had to. If they are any good I will get them on prescription afterwards!

Do you really think i haven't drunk for 2-3 years !!!! Not sure what packet says but i definitely do drink with them

Clayhead · 15/10/2004 16:53

I had a similar problem, tried everything and finally (on the advice of a GP)cut out most dairy from my diet (like efmach suggets) and have hardly suffered since.

rosies · 15/10/2004 16:59

if you are willing to pay £20, why not try reflexology... it is very effective for sinus problems and better than taking sudafed or other bunger uppers!

mind you, if this is a persistant problem and you havent had your doc check it, you should. it could be polyps or something.

if it is allergic rhinitis (all year round allergy) try flixanase. you can get it over the counter but its cheaper (bigger bottle and stronger) on prescrition... i find that very effective.

blossomhill · 16/10/2004 09:49

rosies - I have seen an ENT specialist and they recommended I had my sinuses drained. Everyone that I have spoken to that has had it done regrets it. It doesn't work unfortunately!
I have also taken flixanase and that didn't help either.
Infact when I went to ENT he did say there was a small polyp. Do you think that could be causing the problems?
I am taking the clarityn as I am having a dental op in 2 weeks and really can't bare the thought of my nose running then. TBH I don't like the thought of taking it all year round.

Sorry, meant to say I do have reflexology evry 3 months. Maybe I should look into it more for my sinuses.

OP posts:
rosies · 16/10/2004 11:02

my sister had hers drained and says it was very disgusting but maybe you should consider it, it may give some relief, if not sort it. if there is a polyp, it could be causing problems and again, its worth discussing that possibility and maybe having it removed.

do you find that the problem is worse straight after the reflexology? does the therapist comment on the sinus areas? see what she has to say on it. it may be worth investing in a course of treatments, but only if you feel you would benefit. i ask if it makes it worse, because often the reflexology will stimulate the sinuses and so cause extra secretions but that can be an indication of healing... things do sometimes feel worse before they get better.

but if their is a medical reason for the runnynoseness, that should be seen to also.

blossomhill · 16/10/2004 12:00

Thanks Rosies
I am going to see my gp but what with this and the pain in my lefy hand sie she is going to think I am a hypochondriac!

Just remembered. I had a Hopi Ear Candle treatment a while a go and it was fabulous. My sinuses felt really clear after treatment. It is meant to be very good for nose/ear problems. It's a wierd treatment, but VERY relaxing and really did ease the sinus pain.

It was expensive at £30+ but I would definitely have it again.

Kayleigh · 25/10/2004 16:39

blossomhill, how are you getting on ? Are the anti-histamines working at all ???
