Worst nappy rash ever. Aggh!

Hi, just back from holiday in Spain and DD still has a very bad nappy rash (she is 15 months). Been giving lots of nappy off time but she is also cutting molars on the bottom. Sudocrem & Bepanthan not working that well. Just wondering if there is anything doctor could give on prescription to clear it up any quicker? Or any other ideas? It has been red and sore for almost 2 weeks now.

The dr can give a sterion cream, I can't remember what it's called but it works really well.

LilRedWG · 24/09/2007 08:23

DD's nappy rash was very bad (due to food intollerance) but we found that using cooled chamomile tea (recommended by MNers) to clean her bottom instead of water helped. Also, Metanium cream is fantastic.

liath · 24/09/2007 08:26

Metanium is definitely the best cream to use for bad nappy rash, fantastic stuff. Can buy it or get it prescribed.

Sunshine78 · 24/09/2007 08:31

Caster oil and zinc cream worked well for me or rather my dd!

NappiesGalore · 24/09/2007 08:33

ditch the wipes for a few days? even the really non allergenic ones seem to hurt my ds3 when hes got a rash... i stand him in the bath and shower him off instead.. is that at all practical for you?
other than that, nappy off time, various creams, cammomile etc...

i had to switch from disposables to cloth coz ds3s bum never ever healed... one thing i doscovered in the process is silk liners (raw silk) against the skin really seem to clear it up...

even if youre in sposies, you could try sticking one inside?

here
and bottom of the page here

have also been recommended to soak them in chammomile tea and put on slightly damp too...

Miaou · 24/09/2007 08:43

Another vote for metanium here - ds had such bad nappy rash last week that it was bleeding - metanium cleared it up in 24 hours. Just be very careful you don't get it on your clothes/furnishings because you will never get it out!!

Also as mentioned before, avoid wipes as they will sting - use cotton wool balls and water instead.

MrsJohnCusack · 24/09/2007 08:45

the only thing that worked for my toddler when she got hideous nappy rash was a cream from the pharmacist called Daktozin (that's in NZ, presume it's called the same in the UK). Cleared it up a treat - it's for when the rash has gone 'fungal'
mind you we don't have Metanium here, which is a shame because I do remember that being veyr good too

NappiesGalore · 24/09/2007 08:54

wellif you need any mrsJC, just shout. i could pop some in the post. you prob have hundreds of people who could do that for you too tho...

metanium wasnt working for me... but then, i didnt read the instructions which said to spread v v thinly. might have had somethign to do with it

MrsJohnCusack · 24/09/2007 10:10

thank you Nappies!

jezmond · 24/09/2007 10:12

Brilliant, thanks for all the advice. Have ditched the wipes and just bought Methanium so will give that a try. Cheers!

I'd use bepanthen every time is absolutely fab for nappy rash. keep and eye on it tho if it doesn;t seem to clear may well be thrush so will need something like canestan

Sunshine78 · 24/09/2007 13:46

My doctor told me the way to tell if its thrush is if its in the creases as well and if its not then it is just plain old nappy rash.

lailasmum · 24/09/2007 13:49

Thrush tends to look a bit dotty around the edges too rather than looking like sunburn.

littleboo · 24/09/2007 14:30

yes, with thrush you often get little red spots

hes had a sore bum and nappy area, along with an apparently incredibly itchy willy and ballbag (ballbag?? is that the best owrd i can come up with? apparently.erm.anyway)for as far back as i can remember. hes 20mo now.

it kind of comes and goes, gets worse and better... seemed to improve with switching to cloth, but is still not gone. his willy is sometimes really dry and a bit flakey too. we use ointments and creams of various sorts on rotation, in the hope one fo them will hit the spot sometime... and give him nappy off time etc...

oh poor little sod. i have made appts in the past, when its been really bad, but its always gone back to not v bad looking - like normal nappy redness or something - by the time the appt day arrives. no point telling the doc about something which isnt there when they look, is there?

littleboo · 24/09/2007 15:45

nappiesgalore - don't beat yourself up about it we all miss things and can't be expected to be th oracle on all things health, I suppose thats the joy of being a parent.
I'd still try bepanthen ( get it from Boots) it really does work imo

NappiesGalore · 24/09/2007 15:50

got it. use it nearly every night. unless its worse, then i slather with sudocrem. which also doesnt reallywork. nor does the metanium.

the silk liners take the redness out and the edge off it when it flares. but again, dont really fix it.

is all little red spots atm. hence the thrush realisation. and the flakey willy has made me think eczema before, but is always looking better by the time any medical person is in the vicinity. sigh.

nappyaddict · 24/09/2007 16:01

have you soaked the liners in chamomile?

sometimes if thrush gets really bad then it can get flakey and sometimes it can start off as normal nappy rash then turn into thrush so you get a bit of both and then its hard to figure out. The earth friendly baby red clover cream is pretty good. Oh and if you are using cloth nappies make sure you hot wash or sanitize your nappies the once or twice with a soak to kill off any bugs in the fabric that you machine may be missing.

littleboo · 24/09/2007 16:47

nappies galore why not try a mall amount of canestan 1% cream, wouldn't harm and may help. does sound like it might be thrush, how old did you say your littleone was.
there used to be (talking some time ago ) a cure for bad nappyrash with painting on just egg whites, (again did the trick, not sure now thats pc)
Not keen on sudacreme myself, just tends to hold everything in .

littleboo · 24/09/2007 16:49

Oh , just thought - the HEMP cream from body shop is fab also for skin conditions in grown ups (i used to get really sore hands and was advised by a hairdresser )
Don't know if that could be used on children, never looked into it
