Astonishingly good news about dh

Dh has had a return of a lot of his cancer symptoms over the last month or so.

He has had to go back onto pain relief patches, and has needed other opiates to keep the pain away. His appitite is reduced, be has less energy etc.

So 3 weeks ago he had a scan and we got the results today. We were utterly convinced that this would show major tumour growth and spread.

THERE IS NO REGROWTH AT ALL!!!!!!!!

Can't belive it. Doc is still naturally concerned that he has return of symptoms and is getting the radiograpgers to check for mini tumours, but basically she is very plaesed with result.

And so am I

Ironically DH has a temp atmm and is feling poorly.

But can't beleive how *relativly) good this news is.

vvv, this is this third scan since the chemo started .....each one after 3 months of treatment.

The first scan showed that the tumours were there but had substantially shrunk. The second, after the second 3 months showed no further shrinkage but no re-growth either.

This third one, amazingly given that his symprtoms have returned, show the same....tumours there but no re-growth!

This isn't a cure, but it is buying us more time. Initially he was given 3-6 months, and that was before Christmas! So he is alredy doing better than expected!

Thank you all for your kind interest in dh, there are times when MN has been the only thing (outside dh and the kids) that has kept me going.

Really pleased at that news MB!! - how is Mr MB feeling this morning?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/09/2007 09:44

Oh wow, that's pretty impressive, given the initial prognosis.

So, how long can he go on having treatment? If the tumours dont grow whilst he continues having treatment then where does that leave things?

Sorry - lots of questions

onlyjoking9329 · 19/09/2007 18:26

Oh fab, I so hoped this was you when I saw the title. x

edam · 19/09/2007 18:41

Brilliant! Let's hope Mr MB carries on surprising the doctors.

(Isn't he on some drug the PCT wouldn't fund? Wonder whether the two things are connected...)

Blandmum · 19/09/2007 18:44

vvv, eventually the tumour cells will get 'immune' to the treatment and it will stop working. Normaly this treatment buys the patient an extra 6 weeks.....so you can see that dh has been very lucky!

Once this drug cocktail stops working, there is nothing else on offer, the tumours aren't sensitive to other drugs and radiotherapy has no effect on them.

So once the drugs stop working, the tumours will come back, and probably quite swiftly.

Dh went from minimal symptoms to losing 60 pounds in weight in about 6 months, when they come back, it will probably be just as fast.

I closed my eyes whilst waiting for this thread to load up.

Whoop whoop, am so glad it was you!!!!

He really is a bloody hero isn't he?

Blandmum · 19/09/2007 18:45

Edam, our PCT funds one drug (the infusion) but not another (the tablets). The combined regime is used in the next door PCT, but not ours, so the RAF funds the tablets.

The combined treatment puts the 1 year survival rate up from 16% to 24%
