I am a not very heavy smoker trying to give up. Its been one week and I'm feeling all sorts of pangs and temptations. Any tips from people who have been successful?

smoked my last one an hour ago so am joining you. Keep it up custardo, you're right, everyone else's tales are inspiring and I think if they can do it we can too. Warning, may need to talk about it a bit, is there a stopping smoking website anyone?!

Rhubarb · 27/01/2003 14:52

Well done Custdy! I'm dead proud of you! Now both my dh and my bf have given up smoking - I feel like giving them both a big hug!

Tortington · 27/01/2003 22:28

awww ta rhuby
WWW am sure there is - there is the 0800169169 number you cn talk to them. the patches have a card inside where you can ring them up and talk to them as for posting online maybe they will give you an address althoughits great to post here watch poeoples progression and hic ups.
the very very best of luck.

day 3 nearly over yesssss its getting easier. hubby gave up today ( his birthday) and we are both on the patches although he only decided this after he saw how successfull i have been - cos he has done it before for weeks at a time but i havent so he knows he can do it and i am not there to tempt him back. he found it really hard today and we are both short tempered anyway with each other and its been like we are both pre-menstrual! although ifeel better and he is optomistic.

his patch fell off and cos i only bought one packet becuase he didn't indicate he was giving up i feel quite protective over them! so i talked him into wearing one because being a big man he saw t as a signof weakness, i just told him i would effin divorce him before the day was out if he didnt! so he wears the patch and loses it and so i think theres no way i am giving him another - so i change my patch for a new one, he still coudnt find ihis and so i gave him my old one and told him i had found it!! ooohhhhhh my wwwwwworrd thats so awful - but he doesnt know!
the patches are mmmmmiiiiiiine i tells ya MINE! haaaahaahaaaaaa!

bossykate · 02/02/2003 19:16

hello everyone. it is day 22 today and am now off patches. hooray! forgot one on thursday and did not turn into monster bitch queen from hell (as i have done other patch-less days), so decided i didn't need them any more.

just wanted to say thanks for all the encouragement and support i've received here, it's really helped.

hope everyone else is doing ok

bossykate · 02/02/2003 19:18

oh and i haven't got the munchies any more either! now, two stone to lose...

Twink · 02/02/2003 22:10

Brilliant BK, be really, really proud of yourself and use some of your saved money to get yourself something special.

It is so hard to do and so easy to slip and I truly believe that unless you've done it you can't understand just how hard it is.

But, and I know I've said this before, keep focused else the smoking goblins will sneak up on you !

prufrock · 02/02/2003 22:39

Well done bk.

I am alos quite roud of myslf, I managed to not smoke the othernight, even though I was in a restaurant, had 2 glasses of champagne and people were smoking near me.

soyabean · 14/02/2003 20:40

How's it going all of you? Am feeling quite proud, have not had a cig for 4 weeks, dh also, and we are OK. Harder for him but the patches are helping. I walked into a cafe today and saw 2 women I know vaguely, smoking with their cups of coffee and felt a mild desire for one, but was fine. Just the coffee was OK!

Twink · 14/02/2003 21:46

Good on you Soyabean, 4 weeks is a HUGE milestone, be really proud of yourself (and your dh too) use some of the money you've saved to treat yourselves !

bossykate · 15/02/2003 06:43

well done, soyabean, that's fantastic!

i'm now at the five week mark. have to confess to lapse(s) this past week. was on a business trip and the hotel had cigarettes in the minibar! could not resist when i got back to my room after dinner... my only consolation is that at least i know i'm not an alcoholic, as i never have any problem leaving the booze in a minibar alone!

anyway, back on the wagon now, i'm still feeling positive about quitting and there's no point wallowing in remorse about a setback - you've just got to keep going! i think five weeks is a pretty good achievement anyway

bossykate · 15/02/2003 06:43

that is of course

soyabean · 15/02/2003 11:08

Well done Bossykate, sure it was only a minor setback. I would find it very very hard if they were offered to me in a mini bar! My trouble is that I am creeping back into chocolate abuse, had a creme egg and Reeses peanut butter cups yesterday, as well as choc digestives..I had been much more controlled about sweet stuff recently so am going to have to try harder or I'll be bursting out of my clothes.

Twink · 15/02/2003 11:56

Ooh that's really unfair BK - I'm not surprised you slipped. Next time you stay in a hotel ring housekeeping as soon as you get there and have them removed !! Or better still specify a fag-free mini-bar at time of reservation.

But that was then and it's gone so forget about it and focus on now. You WILL become an ex-smoker !

prufrock · 15/02/2003 15:19

I did exactly the same bk - it wasn't my fault. The hotel only had smoking rooms ready when I checked in and I couldn't wait as I had to get to a meeting and fags are so cheap in Ireland and I'm really trying very hard to justify my slip....

bossykate · 18/02/2003 19:36

hello everyone

i'm well and truly back on track again after last week's slippage, but have had quite bad cravings this week so far (although not as bad as the immediate aftermath of quitting thank goodness!)

prufrock, hang in there, to bolster my resolve i have been asking myself if i want skin like camilla parker-bowles in 15/20 (?) years time not that i have a big downer on cpb, but she does posess a particularly good example of smoker's skin.

soyabean and everyone else, hope all is going well

soyabean · 18/02/2003 22:10

The smoking is fine but my god I have eaten a lot of chocolate. Including a catering size bar which I had nobly had in the cupboard for baking since before Xmas. I started yesterday and have just finished it and feel quite queasy. Serves me right

WideWebWitch · 18/02/2003 23:43

Well done all of you, keep it up. I'm envious. Remember I need your pity (Allen Carr reference for anyone who hasn't read him)

WideWebWitch · 02/03/2003 23:31

OK I'm joining in. I'm not going to post here again though until I can say I've done it (i.e 3 days or more) as having just trawled through the stopping smoking threads for tips, I'm very embarrassed at how many times I've stopped and started again. Hope everyone else is doing well.

bossykate · 03/03/2003 06:38

goof for you, www, and good luck! it is seven weeks for me now.

bossykate · 03/03/2003 06:56

goof? goof?? doh! should of course be "good for you!" aargh, must preview.

prufrock · 03/03/2003 08:32

Good luck www. I'm sure you will be back in 3 days.
So bk - no smoing today then?

Twink · 03/03/2003 11:55

Good luck www, hope you're back before the end of the week.

ScummyMummy · 03/03/2003 17:23

I'm joining you at the startline, WWW, hoping to emulate all you strong-willed ones. Well done Prufrock and bk- what excellent non-smoking fantasticos you're turning out to be! Day 1 is not going as badly as I feared- my patch is on and I have not scalped anyone yet.

CAM · 04/03/2003 12:43

Oh no Scummymummy, now I won't be able to smoke at mumsnet meetups.

bossykate · 04/03/2003 14:43

good luck, scummy!
