Thanks. My only symptoms are a dry mouth, which has only been there for about a week. Blood test next Tuesday but what if I do have a problem with either, what does it mean?

Thanks. I feel very shaky at the thought, have never been in hospital or had anything much wrong with me before.

Floss is a nurse, she speaketh sense

Mercy · 14/09/2007 16:52

cod, I know - not even a flipping cup of tea

Just one last thing, my mum never had a dry mouth as a symptom of her thyroid condition. It does sound likely to be a stress/anxiety situation.

floss, my dad died of lung cancer in HDU at the BRI (are you still in Bristol?)

Work has turned mega stressful, it's true.

Apart from work (which is stress city atm) I'm not worried. Well unless I get a dry mouth/breaking voice and then I think I'm about to drop dead. Of hypochondria probably

Ooooooooooohyes, I had both of these recently - I've had them quite a few times, actually, in various attempts to work out why I get so damn tired. You need to talk to Suzywong about thyroid and how much utterly better having it treated makes you feel, and/or Hoxtonchick about diabetes - honestly, sweetie, they are both managing magnificently and IF - and it is a huge IF - this turned out to be the issue it would be eminently treatable.

The fasting, however, is an issue Over Which I Will Pass. Schedule it for first thing in the morning, take a flapjack with you to eat instantly and warn your nearest that you may be rabidwithhunger a little less patient than usual beforehand.

FlossALump · 14/09/2007 17:02

Yes WWW, still in Bristol and working at BRI. Your poor father, I can understand that it must worry you. Really hope your results come back a ok and that if it is just worry you can try to relax a bit - do you do anything to chill out?

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 14/09/2007 17:02

Oh www - it's probably just the doc being thorough, don't worry! (Easier said than done I know). Look at it this way - it's much better to test and either find something and treat it, or reassure you that you're fine than to leave it and there actually be a problem.

I had a blood test after ds2 was born for the thyroid thing, as they were doing some sort of study while I was pg, so they tested everyone while pg, and then after ds2 was born I got a sinister letter saying 'your levels were abnormal, go to your GP asap', but the GP's test came back normal, so I think they were talking rubbish.

I hope it's all fine - it almost certainly will be. Have you had any other symptoms at all or just a dry mouth?

Do you remember eons ago, you were worried about getting pins and needles in your hand? ANd I seem to remember you concluded it was too much MNetting!!! And definitely don't google! I was in tears this week after googling ds2's possible hip thing, and looking at all the worst case scenarios. I'm sure it's fine. x

WWW, have you seen 40 Yr Old Virgin yet? If you can get a copy tonight and watch it with dh, I guarantee that the ending in particular will make you blissful

FlossALump · 14/09/2007 17:04

Or the other thing I found was aneamia, just a far out thought - are you eating any/enough meat? only I know you try to do your 10 a day thing and wondered if meat sometimes got sacrificed! xx

FlossALump · 14/09/2007 17:05

I wouldn't worry until you have results yet. My mum was diagnosed, however, with type 2 about 2 or 3 years ago. It's very common and treatable but does need tablets and watching your diet

Anna8888 · 14/09/2007 19:17

Please relax and don't worry too much at this stage. Both are very treatable - either with lifestyle measures (diet/exercise/rest etc) or medication.

jalopy · 14/09/2007 19:18

www what other symptoms have you got apart from a dry mouth?

Try not to worry, it may be neither and both usually produce more symptoms than just a dry mouth.

Diabetes- if you have it you may need to alter your diet and/ or take medication to regulate insulin production.

Thyroid- underactive you may need to take thyroxin as your body isn't producing enough.
Overactive you may need an operation to remove part or all of the thyroid gland to decrease the amount of thyroxin produced by your body.

Other symptoms with diabetes and thyroid problems include.

  1. weeing lots(diabetes)
  2. prone to urinary tract infections(diabetes)
  3. extreme weight loss/fluctuation without a marked change in diet.(both)
  4. lethargy more than usual daily tiredness from activity.(both)

Thanks so much for these new posts too. No, no symptoms other than a dry mouth. Will update after my blood test results.

My dry mouth cause = too much dry white wine for me!

Doesn't happen often, but if you have worries and a little vino seems to help, then this could be the cause of your dry mouth..

This is not a post to suggest you have been drinking, just a post to offer another alternative diagnosis.... Dehydration following alcohol.
I stick with the white wine, my memories of a dry mouth following bacardi and coke were much worse.

Relax, have a cup of coffee.

Oops, maybe not, coffee a diuretic properties.

See, it may be as simple a cause as too much coffee.

HTH
