Ds just lost an adult tooth *help*

Ds (12) has just lost an adult tooth 😭
He was chewing a toffee and it ripped his tooth out. Definitely one of his adult teeth, not at the front thankfully.
Our dentist is closed - answerphone says to ring 111 in an emergency but can't get through.
I've give him calpol for the pain but is there anything I can do or will he just have an awful gap now? Feel distraught (sorry I know there is far worse going on with Coronavirus.)

@seaofbleu yeah. Thanks for that, I only ran an OOH dental service for a decade. It could be, let's look for horses not zebras! A grossly carious 6 would decoronate in a very different way to a ready to exfoliate E.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 16/04/2020 20:28

Hi
Apologies been having a disaster at home. I've attached some photos (sorry if gross!!!)

His gum stopped bleeding and he can feel some tooth left in the gap.

Thanks for all advice so far, really appreciate it xx

That is a baby tooth.

No photos?

That’s a baby tooth

DonPablo · 16/04/2020 20:33

That's a baby tooth. The bit left in his gun will be the new tooth, surely? Tooth fairy is still working and molars get a note.

BikeRunSki · 16/04/2020 20:33

Looks like a baby tooth. I had exactly the same panic with my 11 year old a few months ago.

Veterinari · 16/04/2020 20:34

Sorry can see now.

Likely needs some attention as poss Roots left behind/assume not fully resorbed?? but to my eyes it looks like a deciduous tooth
I'm sure @Mrsmorton will advise

bonzo77 · 16/04/2020 20:34

Dentist here. That’s a baby molar and what you can feel underneath is the adult tooth coming through.

Sabine123 · 16/04/2020 20:34

It is a baby tooth - it has no roots. Nothing to worry about.

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 20:35

100% a baby tooth. Relax OP. Keep the new tooth clean if you can see it and have a Brew Wine or your preferred relaxation routine.

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 20:36

Also it's a beautiful baby tooth. Congratulations on looking after it so well

boatyardblues · 16/04/2020 20:37

I love Mumsnet.

ScarfLadysBag · 16/04/2020 20:38

I know next to nothing about teeth but this thread really made me smile. Love a happy ending! Smile

Whatdidisay · 16/04/2020 20:40

100% a baby tooth, adult molars have massive roots. The bit he can feel in the gum is the adult tooth waiting to erupt!

NotInTheMorning · 16/04/2020 20:41

@seaofbleu I’m sure you’re right but that’s not what it says in the NHS link 🤷🏼‍♀️

FredaFrogspawn · 16/04/2020 20:41

This thread made me happy. Not only does the op not have to worry, she has been praised by a dentist for her child’s lovely baby teeth 😁

Bristolbitsandbobs · 16/04/2020 20:42

Also it's a beautiful baby tooth. Congratulations on looking after it so well

Indeed!

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 16/04/2020 20:44

😂😂 I'm glad it's not an adult tooth op, but what made you think it was?

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 20:49

@Wewearpinkonwednesdays they're so much bigger than the other teeth that children lose. It can be confusing.

Do I think parents should get more information on teeth? yes

Is there enough money to make it happen? no

I once had a dad come in accompanied by the police because his 6yo DS has been assaulted. Except he hadn't, he just had wobbly teeth like other 6 year olds. The lack of information is sad, the debate is... how much should be self sought and how much should the state provide.

seaofbleu · 16/04/2020 21:10

@Mrsmorton, no need for your rude & snarky tone. You're not the only dentist on this thread and you're not the only one with many years of EDS experience.

Whatdidisay

"100% a baby tooth, adult molars have massive roots. The bit he can feel in the gum is the adult tooth waiting to erupt!"

Nope. I promise you that adult molars just don't always follow this expectation at all. All my adult molars have had pointy roots. Not the claw roots that everyone imagines.

I'm 52 and have lost most of my molar teeth due to menopausal bone loss. All of my molar teeth had pointy roots, no claws. Which is a bit odd, I know.

Mrsmorton · 16/04/2020 21:21

@WhereDidMyEyebrowsGo Baby teeth look very different, some difference in morphology is obviously normal but that couldn't be anything other than a baby tooth. Especially given that it's hollow with a bit of blood inside.

Sad that you've lost teeth like that. It's very rare.

SirVixofVixHall · 16/04/2020 21:24

As all have said that is a baby tooth.
