Dd swollen eyelid

tenlittlecygnets · 03/04/2020 22:00

Dd (16) has a really sore eyelid. It’s red and swollen. Sore to blink, v sore to close her eye. Her eye is a bit bloodshot too. Feels bruised, she says.

No other symptoms. One eye affected only. Have consulted NHS website, which says poss blephitis.

Have done piriton in case it’s a bite, cold compress on eye, told her to rinse face well in cold water.

Anything else? And when to seek medical advice?!

Thanks.

if not improved tomorrow morning, I'd see if you can get an optician appointment. Most of them are doing emergencies.

tenlittlecygnets · 03/04/2020 22:05

I think it's gp not optician? Her sight isn't affected.

If it isn’t improved by tomorrow I’d seek medical advice. How long has it been swollen? I don’t mean to alarm you but DS had a swollen eyelid which came on quite suddenly (Went from normal to golf ball size over 6-7 hours). He ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics for five days, diagnosed with peri-orbital cellulitis.

Hopefully her case is not serious but doctors tend to take eye- related ailments quite seriously (in normal time’s anyway).

It sounds like it could be periorbital cellulitis. If she is well in herself I’d wait until tomorrow morning and get her seen in A+E then.

misskick · 03/04/2020 22:18

My daughter had blephitis a while back, her vision wasnt affected but as it was her eye i had to take her to the opticians not the gp.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/04/2020 22:26

Picture? I'd be worried about periorbital cellulitis.

tenlittlecygnets · 03/04/2020 23:42

Ooh, thanks. Not swollen to the size of a golf ball - blimey! Just visibly swollen and red. Will see how she is In the mounting. She says it geeks like it's getting worse. Reluctant to bother A&E though...

It woke her today as it was sore. She has been able to do normal stuff today though eg go for a run.

And she is here now being quite cheery

Looks like when I had cellulitis earlier this year. Not as bad as Peri orbital cellulitis but needed antibiotics to ensure it didn't progress. She definitely needs to see a gp if she can.

Teacaketotty · 04/04/2020 00:00

That kind of looks like the beginning of a stye to me, is it painful all over or just at one point?

Try some hot compress on it maybe.. but worth a gp trip for sure antibiotics probably needed

Busymummy16 · 04/04/2020 00:02

Yes was coming on to say peri orbital cellulitis (cellulitis of area around eye I believe). I’ve had it before and my eyelid suddenly blew up and very puffy round the eye, sooner you can get Antibiotics the better. I ended up on IV drip once but second time got the correct ABs and that was enough.
Incidentally I also had blepharitis (like dandruff on the eyelids apparently .. nice!! ) and chalazion (eye cyst) at the same time. Probably caused the cellulitis.
If that is a problem you can get special liquid blephasol to keep it at bay.

Good luck xx

Busymummy16 · 04/04/2020 00:03

Also hot compress on the eyes too will help too but be careful not to spread infection xx

LuckyMarmiteLover · 04/04/2020 00:04

I would try hot compresses

TippledPink · 04/04/2020 00:04

Ooh my daughter (13) has similar, she woke up with it yesterday. Hers is more red/purple and a tiny bit more swollen than your DD's. I have her piriton, I figured it may be a reaction to something? Hers doesn't affect her sight either it is just the eyelid. I was just going to leave it to go down but do update if you get it looked at.

tenlittlecygnets · 04/04/2020 00:19

Thanks, all. She's had it 18 hours now so perhaps not so urgent? Will try hot compress now. Thank you all!

Bkepharitis, it's a stud on the inside, hot compress, if you can get to a pharmacy you can get brolene ointment.

tenlittlecygnets · 04/04/2020 00:45

Thanks. I did add a photo - where has it gone?!

MuttsNutts · 04/04/2020 00:48

I had something similar recently. GP prescribed antibiotic eyedrops but they could be bought over the counter (and were cheaper than paying for prescription).

Ask to speak to the pharmacist.

tenlittlecygnets · 04/04/2020 01:48

Thanks. We do have eye drops. Will try those too.

underneaththeash · 04/04/2020 08:31

Hi OP, it looks like she's getting a chalazion, you can see the lump starting under the lid. There's little evidence that over the counter anti-biotic drops are effective as the inflammation is inside the eye lid.

Hot compresses and massage may help to discharge the lump.
They can occasionally get very inflamed and sometimes need oral antibiotics, but hers doesn't look too bad at the moment. Keep a check on her temperature too, if that goes up you need to contact your GP as you do if she starts to feel unwell or the generalised swelling increases.

It does look like she also has a bit of blepharitis too.
This leaflet from Moorfields describes how you can treat it

www.moorfields.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/Blepharitis.pdf

When all this is over, I would certainly go for an opticians appointment and they can advise on the lids further.

LIZS · 04/04/2020 08:44

Hot and cold compress. Using something gentle like diluted baby shampoo can help.
