Dd swollen eyelid

tenlittlecygnets · 03/04/2020 22:00

Dd (16) has a really sore eyelid. It’s red and swollen. Sore to blink, v sore to close her eye. Her eye is a bit bloodshot too. Feels bruised, she says.

No other symptoms. One eye affected only. Have consulted NHS website, which says poss blephitis.

Have done piriton in case it’s a bite, cold compress on eye, told her to rinse face well in cold water.

Anything else? And when to seek medical advice?!

Thanks.

How is she this morning OP?

tenlittlecygnets · 05/04/2020 15:49

No better. Eye lid sore and red. Using antibiotic ointment 4x a day. Looks like a lump - style? - on eyelid too. Sigh. She has a headache and slight blurry vision in that eye.

Thanks for asking, @underneaththeash 😀

Certainly sounds like a stye, wash with warm salty water and warm compress as much as you can. Luckily they sort themselves out in a week usually! You may find it pops and drains which is always fun! I suffered with them when pregnant Flowers

underneaththeash · 05/04/2020 18:15

Are you doing the hot compresses?
Eye may just be blurry as the ointment makes the vision slightly smeary. Can you check the vision before putting in the drops?
If it's not better tomorrow, you may need some amoxicillin. I'll check in on you on the morning and see.

@Teacaketotty - styes are external - like spots on the lid. Chalazia are inside the lid. They're usually pretty harmless, but unsightly. But they can get inflamed and progress (which no-one wants especially at the moment!).

boogiebogie · 05/04/2020 23:43

Look up euphrasia mother tincture

tenlittlecygnets · 06/04/2020 00:40

She's doing the ointment (on the lids, not in the eye) but no improvement yet. She's doing regular hot compresses too, but they are very sore.

It's a chalazion. She needs to scrupulously clean her lid margins every day, twice a day, to get on top of the blepharitis. There are lots of lid scrubs and gels available, also wipes which some people find helpful. Others swear by very very dilute tea tree oil or just saline.

If warm compresses aren't helping though stop them (all they do for me is irritate the skin around my eyes and make it look and feel worse.)

The chalazion (the lump - which is a blocked gland) may or may not go down. They can be surgically removed through if they don't go down of their own accord, but that can take months and usually that's no longer available on the NHS.

When the initial swelling and redness around her eye has gone down though it should look a lot better.

underneaththeash · 06/04/2020 21:13

If it's a chalazia under the lid, putting drops on the lid itself won't make it go, can you do another photo like the one on the previous page?

tenlittlecygnets · 07/04/2020 11:50

I rang our GP yesterday and sent photos of dd's eye to a practice nurse. She said it's a stye, not blepharitis, and that they don't recommend the use of antibiotic ointment any more Confused

Dd has to clean her eyelid using salt water twice a day, plus do hot compresses. She feels like the lump is under the lid, because it hurts to close her eyes. She's in a lot of pain and can't sleep.

What's the difference between a style and a chalazion? I didn't realise this would be so tricky to diagnose... and dd's eyelid is definitely swollen, it's not just a lump.

New pic attached!

That's how far she can open her eye, btw.

Have just reread thread and found out the difference between a stye and a chalazion.

The nurse yday said that local opthalmology depts at hospitals are not taking referrals due to covid-19, so that's not an option.

I had a stye that started like this with notable swelling of my eyelid.

My GP said that hot compresses are the most effective way to 'draw' them out.

I did find that it made a noticeable difference quite quickly, certainly within 48 hours if not sooner.

Given how much your daughter's eye is swollen closed I'd keep a very careful watch on this. If it gets any worse rather than better over the next 24 hours I'd want to be seen.

tenlittlecygnets · 07/04/2020 12:06

She is doing hot compresses, but no change. And she says its too sore to massage...

It’s a chalazion and it is infected - you can see how the area of redness has increased significantly since the original photo.
You need some oral antibiotics tomorrow.
If you tell the GP that your daughter has an inflamed chalazion at risk of becoming pre-septal (Periorbital cellulitis) They should prescribe, especially if you show them the first and today’s photos. I’ll also PM you.

Ihavechangedmyname2manytimes · 07/04/2020 22:46

I think it is Chalazion. My DS had this couple years ago. Took him to GP, but was prescribed nothing, just told to keen area clean. It went by itself in 2-3 weeks. It looked just like in your picture. I've heard that chalazion is a sign that child lacks Vitamin A.

CrocodilesCry · 11/04/2020 00:16

How is your DD and her eye now @tenlittlecygnets?

I've had two new chalazions start this week on the same eye through not cleaning my eyes as well as I usually do Sad So I really do sympathise.

dragonscannotswim · 11/04/2020 07:41

Oh, @crocodilescry, I'm sorry to hear that!

After great advice on here from @Underneaththeash, we got dd antibiotics. We had pus yesterday (sorry) so dd feels much more comfortable now. She's had two days of ABs and the redness and swelling are going down slowly, though her eyelid has a dent in it where the lump was, and is a bit yellow (urgh, sorry, tmi).

I hope you feel better soon!

tenlittlecygnets · 11/04/2020 07:43

Sorry, name change fail! The above post was me!
