What's the best diet anyone has been on?

I have heard good reports about slimmers world however I suffer social phobia and hate being in groups/classes of any kind so I am thinking of doing the slim fast diet. The only thing is when I tried it a few years ago I was hungry within 20 minutes of having the slimfast shakes. They don't seem to fill me up.

What has worked gor everyone?

I do sw and have lost over a stone!

beansontoast · 10/09/2007 16:59

...oh bother i was going to say weight watchers...all my friends have doen really well on it.

personally if i have weight to shift i eat cereal for breakfast, something like soup and bread for lunch...snack only on fruit and jaffa ckes etc and eat a modest dinner of anything i fancy...

OR i eat whatever i like and run three times a week...magic!

I'm another slimming world fan (but don;t go to the classes anymore, same reason as you, if I'm honest). But you can also do weight watchers at home, they send you the info after you've paid upfront.
I have done every diet going and have come to the conclusion that WW is great if you like variety but don't mind weighing things out (they've got a new no weighing type plan now, but I didn;t get on too well with that). SW is great if you don't mind being a little bit restricted on what you can eat, but if you like to eat until you're full.
As long as your 'diet' doesn't deviate too far from what you like to eat anyway, you'll be fine (and this is why I think things like cabbage soup and slimfast fail for me)

HonorMatopoeia · 10/09/2007 17:09

Weightwatchers worked for me (and believe me, I've tried every diet!) You could always do weightwatchers online if you were strict enough with yourself.

bamzooki · 10/09/2007 18:42

Hanaflower - why 'getting enough sleep' specifically? [curious emoticon]

BarbieGirl · 10/09/2007 18:47

hanaflower I agree about eating earlier in the evenings however don't the French, Italians and Spanish eat very late in the evenings - something like 9pm or even 10pm ?

NutraCheck

You input your weight and height, and how much you want to lose per week. The site calculates what calories per day you should eat. You then input your food (it does it cleverly with last 4 digits of barcodes) and it tells you how much you're eating. It even counts your water intake, 5 a day of fruit/veg and alcohol units.

You can then eat whatever you want, as long as you don't go over your calories. I find it works best if I set just a small weekly loss (1lb) as otherwise it's quite hard to stick to low a fairly low calorie diet.

I'm 5'5", weigh 15 stone, and at losing 1lb per week, I'm allowed just over 2000 calories. That's actually quite a lot, and I am finding it very easy to stick to. I know you lose a bit more at first, but I have lost 6 lbs in three weeks, and haven't felt starved or hard done by at all.

There's a free trial (5 days???), so you could give it a go and see how you get on.

Pinkchampagne · 10/09/2007 18:48

The wine diet!

jaynehater · 10/09/2007 18:50

Best weight loss regime I ever undertook entailed staying in bed with dh early in our relationship, doing bad things, and thereby being too loved up and, tbh, exhausted, to eat.

Lost six pounds in under two weeks on that one.

Strangely, it's lost it's efficacy......

newgirl · 10/09/2007 18:51

entering a 10K race and doing all the training was the only thing that worked for me!

LordVenger · 10/09/2007 18:52

No wheat, small plates, lots of tea, walking everywhere. Actually, gastroenteritis was the very best, but small plates comes a much more pleasant second.

katyamum · 10/09/2007 19:13

ediets.co.uk. Brilliant. Like weightwatchers online, except the meets are all cyber. Online chat rooms, a real person mentoring you, recipe-based or convenience food based, linked to tesco so it gives you a shopping list that links to their website. I lost 1 stone in between baby 1 and 2, then 3 stone after baby 3. I loved the food, not faddy, not silly, jsut healthy and sensible. Weighing portions but not strictly calorie counting at all. Daily inspiration emails. I also got a pilates teacher which was expensive but worked really well in conjunction with the diet. If I had cravings I emailed them and they would email a sensible reply. It was realistic, and also slow which is good. It took about 6 months to lose 3 stone. It costs about £30 for 3 month starter package. Good luck.

sparkler · 10/09/2007 19:17

Slimming World for sure. You can eat normally but sensibly and it definitely fills you up as there is a good choice of foods you can eat as much as you want of.

dinny · 10/09/2007 19:18

how long before you notice a difference on diets generally?

sparkler · 10/09/2007 19:20

I've been back to slimming world (5th time now ) for three weeks and I have lost 6.5lbs and that's not following it every day 100%. I've lots of events in between which got in the way slightly but I still managed good days which paid off.

dinny · 10/09/2007 19:22

just seems to take so long - can't get motivatd without near-immediate results!

artichokes · 10/09/2007 19:22

Ate less and exercised more.
(To be precise I stopped eating between meals and had no sweet things or creamy sauces. I also swam or walked for 30 mins each day.)

Amethyst8 · 10/09/2007 20:26

No refined carbs - ie white bread, cakes, biscuits, pasta etc. If I cut these out weight falls off and no more bloating either.

Did Atkins for about four months as well (Boo! Hiss!) and I hate to say it but that really worked as well. However when I finished doing it I went carb mad. Didnt put much weight back on but I can t really stomach a meal without carbs to this day.

Also follow Slimming World loosely as well. I went to meetings originally about 10 years ago but I don t like groups/classes either. I ordered my book on Ebay and use that. Out of them all I found this one the most effective and easiest to incorporate in to every day life. I buy the Slimming World Magazines as well and there are some really good recipes in them. Not so much like dieting but eating really tastily and healthily.

Amethyst8 · 10/09/2007 20:27

To add to previous I find that I feel better about three days after starting. Clothes start to feel looser etc. I always make myself get through first three days because how I feel after that will make me carry on.

BellaBear · 10/09/2007 20:31

ate more non processed food, particularly fruit and veg, cut down on processed food (in particular pasta) and took more exercise.

I found keeping a food diary kept me from cheating by eating crap because I would have to own up to it myself.

choosyfloosy · 10/09/2007 20:34

Weight Watchers, if you have kids, or if you don't, in fact. IMO it is the only truly humane diet. Slimming World is best IMO if you have dieted for years and have lost touch with food a bit, as it works best if you eat a lot, but for me who would always choose quantity over quality, it was really hard to actually lose much.

If you can just nerve yourself to go once to WW and get the first booklet and Points calculator (or could someone else go for you?) you can do the rest at home, although it helps if your partner/other associate will do it with you.

In terms of near-instant results, it helps to be really overweight. And male. My partner has lost a stone in 3 weeks on WW this time; i've lost 12 pounds in 4 weeks. Not bad. It helps if you actually enjoy carrots like I do, but it's not essential.
