Anyone still up? In scary place

Dd2 (16) was admitted to hospital today, suffering from a weird and scary skin condition - the worst is in her mouth, lots of agonising little white spots, but she also has spots on arms, legs and back which look a bit like angry insect bites. Hospital says infection or drug reaction (she's recently started Sertraline) but we need test results to know more. I've persuaded the ward to let me stay with her - in a chair all night - as i can't bear to leave her in so much pain in a strange place with lots of horrible stuff going on. Woman in next bed keeps being sick really loudly and i have stupidly googled and found all kinds of terrifying explanations of her symptoms. Any calming words would hugely appreciated!

Temp and weakness does not seem to reflect an allergic reaction to medication, seems more like a virus to me. When I was in hospital on a ward last year there was a young boy there about 16-17yrs old and his dad sleeping in a chair beside him so I do think it's normal for her age to be admitted to adult ward especially if children's is particularly busy etc. I hope the doc comes round soon to give you some results/answers.

CrazyOnAComputer · 24/02/2020 12:34

What has the Dermatologist said? They may be considering Stevens-Johnson syndrome in relation to the Sertraline. Please don't google it, wait to see what they say. At least she is in the best place.

Lauren850 · 24/02/2020 13:25

Unfortunately I've already googled. Waiting to hear more, she's having a skin biopsy this afternoon. No blood test results yet

no practical advice but you sound like a wonderful mum.

knowmenclature · 25/02/2020 00:09

How did today's biopsy go? What did the bloods reveal?
Have they got her pain under control?

How are you doing? Cake Brew Flowers

Have they definitely ruled out something like hand foot & mouth? I caught it as an adult from ds & I was very poorly, the rash covered a lot of my body, my bum was covered & it spread up my back & down my legs, my hands & feet looked like they had been burned, the spots joined up & blistered my skin, mymouth was so sore I couldn't eat anything hot for weeks. I ended up at A & E, they gave me antihistamines & a dose of steroids to calm everything down, I also had to use Eurax cream on the rash, it didn't stop my hands & the soles of my feet peeling like an onion.

Lauren850 · 25/02/2020 03:35

Omg Nat that does sound horrific! I did think HFM right at the stsrt but funnily enough her hands and feet are about the only things not involved! Its mouth body and limbs - spreading all the time but still individual spots, not joined up. Since yest theyre incredibly itchy and sting like mad but the worst thing is the aching in her back, legs and arms which is so severe they've had to give morphine which i think is unusual for her age?
Haven't had most tests back yet but the full blood count shows all normal except for raised inflammatory markers. Wtf?????

Good luck!!
At least they have raised her pain meds, I hope she is more comfortable.
Your poor daughter, I hope she improves soon.
How about you have you had anything to eat?
I'd make you a cup of tea if I was there. Xx

NeverGuessWho · 25/02/2020 05:39

Just read your thread *Lauren850•.

Hope you get some answers, and that DD is more comfortable this morning.

You must be exhausted. 💐Brew

BecauseReasons · 25/02/2020 05:51

Hope they get to the bottom of it soon, OP.

JolieOBrien · 25/02/2020 06:11

@Lauren850

I am sorry hear about her suffering. Rashes are very common in young children when they have a virus and can look nasty. My son had chickenpox when he was two and he looked horrific. The spots were in his mouth and on his eyelids, they were so bad he had to have antibiotics because they became infected. Hopefully you will get some answers soon and thankfully you are in hospital so she will be monitored and well looked after.

Skierrdery · 25/02/2020 06:12

Could it be something like Shingles?

Lauren850 · 25/02/2020 06:16

Thanks all, it's so lovely to have your support. I've just had the most amazing 4 hours of sleep as DD was knocked out by morphine and i have a mattress!! I almost cried when they brought it, we're on a new ward now - dermatology- so there's no more talk of me having to leave as DD has her own room- 12th floor overlooking the Thames!! Its funny to be confronted with one of the fabulous views in the world and feel so miserable and scared. Symptoms have got worse overnight so just hanging on to see the docs again

StealthPolarBear · 25/02/2020 06:19

I hope they get it identified and treated today op

Nogodsnomasters · 25/02/2020 07:14

Glad you got a more comfortable sleep and your daughter too. I hope today brings some answers for you.

walkingongreyclouds · 25/02/2020 07:20

Sending handholds OP

BearimyJeremy · 25/02/2020 07:21

Hope you get some answers and she is on the mend soon. Bless her she does sound desperately uncomfortable. Not diagnosing, just I remember when my son had shingles ... how quickly we went from ok to him in agony and being up the hospital and how terrifying it was. She's in the right place and the biopsy should get the right treatments soon hopefully Flowers

ZombiePeanut · 25/02/2020 15:48

Any news OP?
