TheQueenOfQuotes · 04/09/2007 21:02

hate to say it.......but I think it sounds pretty normal for a 6 week old too

Desiderata · 04/09/2007 21:02

Ah, the famous six week mark! This is when most women give up bf (if they give up), and the will to live.

Everything you describe is text-book normal. Hang on in there ... it will all improve very shortly

bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:03

so do all mums spend the whole day in one room - feeding there lo with bottles every hour to two??

OP posts:
bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:04

i was told 6 weeks it gets better well the last few days it has been getting worse and worse

whomovedmychocolate · 04/09/2007 21:05

Oh god yes, the first six weeks - at six weeks and no bugger bothers to tell you this CRYING REACHES A PEAK - it's all better from now on - seriously, in a couple of weeks you will realise that things aren't as bad as they were. You will still be knackered and pissed off but it really does get better.

Your tiredness also reaches a peak because you've lost all your new baby endorphins (if you were lucky enough to have any dished out) and you are just wrung out from the mess and chaos and weirdness that is mummyhood.

Don't worry we've all been there. Lock yourself in the bathroom for an hour and have a bath.

THIS WILL GET BETTER!

whomovedmychocolate · 04/09/2007 21:06

Bumbly - I spent the first six weeks with my tits out saying 'why is this baby always feeding'. Or alternatively wondering how one small baby could create so many poos!

scootermum · 04/09/2007 21:08

I did with DD1..I remember it well, I felt like I was in prison and being tortured with sleep deprivation to boot!
I wrote something similar in my diary at the time!

She settled down a bit from 10 weeks and by about 14 weeks we were able to out her down (sometimes) in the day and thank God she started to sleep through with a dream feed..

Hang on in there hon..

rosealbie · 04/09/2007 21:08

It does sound normal behaviour but that won't help how you are feeling. My ds had reflux, hardly slept in the day etc and was really sick every time he fed. I was so worried about him but my health visitor and gp were (in the end) very understanding. I felt that there was something wrong but in the end, he did grow out of it as everyone said he would. It can be so wearing having a baby who is sick a lot and doesn't nap in the day.

Are you on your own with your ds?

Can someone else have him for a while?

bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:08

well he also never seems happy - and that worries me

never sleeping too - surely it is not healthy for him

and he spends all the time feeding (bottle) and then the rest of the day winding and screaming in pain

infacol made it worse today

MadLabOwner · 04/09/2007 21:08

Bumbly, your post took me right back to having a tiny baby. I remember feeling exactly the same, but it does get better and very soon. Babies are so tiny at this age, and all they want is to be asleep on you or to be in your arms.

I know it can be so frustrating when you want to do something else rather than just sit there with your baby, but please hang on in there as LO's ability to sleep elsewhere will improve soon. Think most babies fall into a routine around 8 weeks, and start sleeping properly at night for a much longer stretch as well.

Chin up - you are nearly there!

bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:10

no all laone...and my mum keeps telling me am uselss which doesnt help

rosealbie · 04/09/2007 21:11

Now bear in mind I know nothing about this, but could it be a milk allergy? I remember this was suggested when my ds was the same age. I was breastfeeding and was advised to cut out dairy from my diet. Just a thought.

whomovedmychocolate · 04/09/2007 21:11

Bumbly - might be worth seeing a cranial osteopath - him not you.

On the sleeping front, I was CONVINCED DD only slept three hours in 24 for ages. She probably did for a while. You get a bit psycho after a while but they do sleep more than you realise if you have the time to tot it all up. She still only sleeps 10 hours though - apparently it's a sign of intelligence!

The happiness thing - well right about now you will start to see a smile and it'll make it worthwhile I promise.

Some babies are grumpy though - he's just in training to be an old duffer very early

Olihan · 04/09/2007 21:12

Babies have a MASSIVE growth spurt at around 6 weeks and seem to go through a big developmental change too. Combine that with rapidly plummeting hormones, a life that's been turned upside down, major sleep deprivation, having every minute of your life dictated by a tiny screaming bundle and it does make for a pretty shitty time.

Honestly, it does get better, we're all here to tell the tale and you will be too, I promise.

What treatment is your ds on for the reflux? There are several things you can be prescribed that will ease it more effectively than Gaviscon (ranitidine and domperidone are a couple), if you are concerned that he's still in pain, don't be shy about asking for better meds.

Hang in there, it will get better.

XcupcakemummyX · 04/09/2007 21:12

my dd was was very sicky till five months old and we could not lay her down to sleep at all!

she improved when she went on solids

go out when you can
ask for help
and try to look after yourself

dd is now 16

and i survived
tons of luck

whomovedmychocolate · 04/09/2007 21:12

I also found going out EVERY SINGLE DAY for a walk with the buggy helped - whether DD was screaming or I was, just changing your scene can help. Or get a sling and carry him.

bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:12

had an appointment with cranial but cjockened out as thought of someone touching Lo head really really freaked me out - no docs around in case something goes wrong after treatment

OP posts:
rosealbie · 04/09/2007 21:13

You are on your own? well that's double wearing then. I really feel for you and hope things start to settle down soon.

BTW, you are definately not useless, just tired and worried

ib · 04/09/2007 21:13

Erm.....if you are seriosly worried fight your corner. Ds had reflux and we didn't manage to get a diagnosis until he was over 4 mo - by which time he was severely ftt. And all could have been avoided if we'd got the right meds sooner.

Yes, it's normal for babies to have phases but if you feel that something is not right don't get fobbed off.

bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:13

sorry meant chickened

OP posts:
rosealbie · 04/09/2007 21:14

Agree with whomovedmychocolate - definately get out with the buggy and just walk for as long as you can. My ds settled well in a buggy and never in his cot.

Tutter · 04/09/2007 21:15

haven't read thread but, in reply to op

i too have a 6 week old

he has colic and reflux too

only settles in daytime in my arms
brings back milk after and during each feed (enough to soak through 2 muslins)
some nights sleeps 3 hrs at a time - other nights no more than 30 mins because of colic

ds1 was the same

but he kicked it after 10 weeks - it was like the sun came out

typically 12 weeks is the turning point i believe

so - it will get better

whomovedmychocolate · 04/09/2007 21:16

bumbly - I was too but it's fine - you are there and if you feel uncomfortable you can stop but they are very very gentle and DD just lay there looking at the osteo with a sort of cross eyed glare and then finally smiled when he'd finished. She slept better that night.

Have you considered the possibility that you might be a tad depressed though? It's a lot to take on, particularly on your own. Perhaps you could talk to your HV about it or if you don't find her helpful, your GP?

bumbly · 04/09/2007 21:17

oh yes def depressed and mumsnet always helps me out!!

feel better bit now before off to bed

but still dont think there is end in sight as Lo def getting worse

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 04/09/2007 21:19

bumbly - take it a day at a time and don't be worried if you are having a horrid time - it is, I am afraid, entirely normal and you would be mad to be enjoying being sleep deprived and yelled at - but the time will come when things get slightly better.
