What shampoo relieves scalp psoriasis itching?

JustMyName · 21/01/2020 20:46

I use betacap, but try to limit how often so as not to get rebound problems. My head is so itchy though. Is there a shampoo that really helps? I've tried Body shop ginger shampoo, polytar, t-gel, one prescribed by my gp that is red ... nothing helps. Gp reluctant to prescribe anything else, so it needs to be something I can buy in Boots etc.

Thanks.

My ds has just been diagnosed with this. We've tried everything. He uses ketanozole (sp?) shampoo every other day and vosene on the other days. If it's really bad I give him an antihistamine. The Dr said it's an over immune response to a natural fungus we all have. It's not an over growth of the fungus though!

You need a shampoo with selenium sulphide in it. They discontinued the loreal version which was gutting. Then there was a thread on here that told me the head and shoulders clinical solutions one in the cardboard box had the same ingredient. Sure enough it does, and it works - hurrah.
Since then I can only find tiny bottles and they're way more expensive than most. But it works so I really don't care.
Undmfortunately I'm really struggling to find it anywhere anymore. Sometimes sainsbury's has it in, but tesco have stopped doing it and boots too. I don't even know if they're making it anymore but if I find any I buy whatever is left on the shelf!

My friend has psoriasis and she swears by Alphosyl, you can buy it in Boots or from Amazon.

Selsun is a fiver and you only need to use it now and again, it's not an everyday shampoo. It has selenium in it, that's why it works. It's better than Nizoral IME.

JustMyName · 22/01/2020 15:42

Ok thanks .. I was looking on Amazon, it was Selsun Blue, is that the right one?

£3.99

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2020 15:44

No not Selsun blue, I think that's more an every day one and is available in America now. I can't seem to get Selsun in the shops atm so order on line with no problems. It's a bit sulphur smelling but works so well and as I said only news to use it now and again as I use Vosene in between.

@JustMyName this is the most recent one I used and it's good. Comes with a handy dropper as well gets through to the scalp.

Hi, I've tried them all over the years too, but as pp said my go to now during a flare up is something with selenium in it. The small clinical solutions head and shoulders has that ingredient and I only need to use if a couple of times for a vast improvement.

I can then maintain with body shop ginger shampoo but nothing else really. The ginger shampoo does nothing to help during a flare though, I need selenium for that.

Hope that helps

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2020 15:57

Selenium does seem to be the magic ingredient. Damn L'Oréal for discontinuing the fabulous anti dandruff selenium shampooAngry

JustMyName · 22/01/2020 16:01

The shampoo the doctor prescribed has ketanozole in it, I've just checked. That doesn't seem to help really. I'll check out the others. Thanks everyone.

This is the massager I got. Don't use it when flared up and painful but when it's not - even if still flaky. I found it really helped. I just use it for a few minutes before bed each night

Lurking

lazymum99 · 22/01/2020 16:37

Alphosyl sort of works.
The best solution I found was to massage whichever oil suits into your scalp, cover with a disposable shower cap, put a towel on your pillow and leave overnight. Do it the night before you are washing it anyway.

Has anyone tried buying liquid selenium and adding it to shampoo. Just checked and it is something you can buy in liquid form.

Smidge001 · 31/01/2020 19:16

@RoomR0613 no - but I'd love to find out if it works. You'd have to work out the right proportions. Are you willing to be a Guinea pig? Following with interest!

After ten days of dermovate scalp treatment I'm going to brave trying to remove some scales in the morning so it's a night of olive oil Envy for me.

If anyone has any tips on:

a) should I wrap my head in an old pillowcase tonight

b) any tips for easing the scales out in the morning

I'd be most grateful!

INeedNewShoes · 31/01/2020 19:42

@lazymum99 - can I summons you back to the thread and ask you to see my above post. It sounds as though you've done the olive oil thing before. Any pointers?

lazymum99 · 31/01/2020 21:04

I just slept on a towel. But used a shower cap on the oily head.
Some of the scales are in the hair so before washing it you can use a bit comb and all those come out.
Just massage it before rinsing and then wash a couple of times.
