She kept looking at her chart instead of her. I'm so mad, Have a peak and tell me if i'm crazy! Its a very recent picture

See, this is why the parents of obese kids don't spot it when they should. HVs screw is up all the time with normally weighted kids.. Why should you suddenly start trusting them implicitly when your child is overweight?

chocolateteapot · 24/08/2007 12:18

I think it is actually really worrying that supposedly qualified people can't work out the relationship between height and weight.

Looking at the photo of your lovely DD, your HV is more than barking, she is dangerous and certifiable !

Desiderata · 24/08/2007 12:21

In any circumstances, 98th centile would not be overweight providing the height was upwards of 75th centile.

My ds is on 75th centile for both weight and height, but to look at him you'd think he was lighter. He's a skinny whippet, but he's well-muscled. You dd looks of a similar build (and very gorgeous she is too!)

There's really no point in having these charts if HV's aren't going to put weight and height together.

EscapeFrom · 24/08/2007 12:27

The point of these charts is also that it is a sweep of the nation's poulation. It is no indicator of how overweight some IS, merely of how heavy they are compared to everyone ELSE.

I get so irate about this! It's very simple, high school maths, that professionals REALLY SHOULD GRASP!

Easywriter · 24/08/2007 12:28

Um Paulaplumpbottom, you are mental, can't you see how horrifically overweight your child is??

Sorry, I hope you recognise sarcasm. Is she mad????

All that remains for you to do is to find an HV with a brain!

Fat indeed, Harumph!

WanderingTrolley · 24/08/2007 12:33

How on Earth is it that so many HVs seem to be so crap?

I mean, it's odd really isn't it - what other profession is so roundly declared as full of loons and idiots? And why is it that the ones who aren't are brilliant - there's no middle ground?

PPB - your dd is beautiful and your HV is possibly drunk.

And by CarGirl's reasoning I am extremely underheight!

margoandjerry · 24/08/2007 12:47

Following my hv's reasoning, I actually don't have a height at all so my bmi has a value of infinity!

paulaplumpbottom · 26/08/2007 16:17

Thanks for the reassurance. I knew I wasn't crazy and I'm glad I'm not the only one with a blind HV

centile chart

If you would like to check PPB.

EricL · 27/08/2007 11:40

God i hate HV's. They love to make up issues to justify their existance. Wsste of space and resources for most of us.

I have had three made-up medical issues from them in the past which have all been dismissed by the docs as nonsense. We know better than anyone if there is something wrong with our children.

orangehead · 27/08/2007 11:44

i think i might be tempted to report her, obviously yr daughter has no weight problem she cant say that. if u listen to yr hv and tried to reduce her weight when obviously she doesnt need 2 that could b dangerous (not suggesting u would). what does she want to c an anoxeric child

lurkylou · 27/08/2007 11:46

amazing!!

MatNanPlus · 27/08/2007 12:34

As a nanny (and now a maternity nanny) for over 18yrs i have meet very few that were of any use.

nanninurse · 27/08/2007 18:22

Hey, you lynch mob, the health visitors are doing a good job, they are not perfect & many are mums too.. Some children have horrific childhoods & hv are often the 1st port of call for child protection reports etc. Information, such as centiles is only a guide bt it could prove invaluable in cp cases.
Give us a break ..

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/08/2007 18:26

I was told (by hosp consultant) that ds was a bit skinny and to feed him up - gah ! it got me in a pickle although I know that ds has a really excellent diet and loves his food...

paulaplumpbottom · 27/08/2007 19:16

I did think about reporting her Orangehead but then my husband reminded me that when I brought DD home she came everyday and even did my dishes on a couple of occasions.

My hv told me that they don't measure baby's length, because, 'They are too bendy...' I'm not sure how she kept a straight face as she said it.

summer111 · 28/08/2007 16:27

I remember reading somewhere that those charts were created way back in the 'good old days' and have absolutely no bearing on the size of todays babies...
I have to say in defence of H/V's, I had one brilliant one who was a mum herself.

EricL · 28/08/2007 16:34

Nanninurse - the HV's do a good job with vulnerable kids yes. That is where they are needed for sure and i'm sure thay have solved a lot of issues in the past.

If they happen to visit a stable, intelligent family in a nice house with a perfectly healthy baby - why do they feel the need to make up ailments?
