Kind of makes you wonder what they are there for ddoesn't it Charlee

OP posts:
CarGirl · 23/08/2007 22:11

what centile is her weight on and what centile her height? Provided that there isn't a vast difference between the two there is ABSOLUTELY no concern. For example if her height was on 25th and her weight above 75th that would be a little concerning to ensure the gap didn't get bigger but you'd have to monitor it over a long time as the grow upwards in spurts IYSWIM

paulaplumpbottom · 23/08/2007 22:12

She didn't say what her centles were. How would I find out?

my friend was told by her HV the other day that her bouncy, chubby, alert, sleeping for 7 hours at night, 12 week old, should "have some formula or rice" because she had gone form the 50 to the 25 centile

Notwithstanding that the stupid HV should not be advising formula or early weaning, she didn't ask my friend anything about her baby - just looked at the charts

Snowstorm · 23/08/2007 22:14

My HV told me to keep an eye on DD1 at her 2.5 year health check appointment as she was right at the top of the scale for weight ... it took me to point out that she was also at the top of the height chart too. Once she'd actually looked/noticed she said DD1 probably got her height from me (I'm 5ft 4 ... just call me Lofty ...).

I take my DD's to these checks when it's requested that I do so but I am not under any illusion that they are of any benefit to anyone as they are SO vague and rubbish.

I don't think there is a HV qualification or, if there is, it's all done by books and not by actually looking at or touching a baby/child.

paulaplumpbottom · 23/08/2007 22:14

You would think there was a chart somewhere that said no solids before whatever age they have decided upon this week

Do you have a little red book that all your immunisations are recorded in, there should be centile charts in the back. The H.V should be plotting them on that. Unless its different for different health authorities.

frumpygrumpy · 23/08/2007 22:15

Your HV is bonkers. Your DD is gorgeous.

CarGirl · 23/08/2007 22:16

Do you have one of them red health record books they are in there just plot their height and weight against their age.

Your HV is made, would you all assume I was seriously underweight at 7st4?

then I told you I am only 5' tall, would that make a difference?

12lbnaturally · 23/08/2007 22:16

H.V's have to do 1 year full time post nursing training. So they are supposed to be very qualified.

paulaplumpbottom · 23/08/2007 22:17

Thanks Frumpy!!!! 12lb I'll have to check tommorow as I left the red book at the Surgery. She did mark something down at the back. It had lots of curved lines on it.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 23/08/2007 22:17

thyey are supposed to be very qualified, but some are bloomin awful.

come back jamie, all is forgiven, even if you did insist on calling me sara-jayne

CarGirl · 23/08/2007 22:18

How tall is your dd and how old is she and I'll tell you what centile she is now, do you know how much she weighed?

paulaplumpbottom · 23/08/2007 22:19

Have you had several Lady Victoria? I've only ever had the one. She was great when dd was a baby but She has gone a bit loopy the last couple of visits

OP posts:
12lbnaturally · 23/08/2007 22:20

Thats it, the curved lines are the centile charts.

yogabird · 23/08/2007 22:20

as soon as i had dd2 i ignored whatever hv's offered because by then i knew best you know best too! your dd looks just lovely

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 23/08/2007 22:20

yes, as have lived in different areas.

jamie was the best, he actually looked at the children and not just the book.

ones in the other town i lived at were awful.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 23/08/2007 22:21

There is clearly nowt wrong with her PaulaP!
Dont you worry your pretty head over it! They drive me bonkers!

I am worried about Ds1 as he is off the scale for height, always has been and weighs 28lbs which is spot on for a normal 2 year old, but he is so skinny he looks a bit ill to me and they say he is fine.

In either circumstance, height is never considered. i think most of his weight is made up by his height.

paulaplumpbottom · 23/08/2007 22:22

Thanks Yoga

paulaplumpbottom · 23/08/2007 22:24

I wouldn't worry Flowers, I don't think there is anything wrong with being too tall.

DS was always on 98th centile for weight but not an ounce of fat on him school nurse at secondary school said he was overweight in year 10 perhaps if she had listened to his voice (deep) and realised he had the man muscles with a very athletic shape that he was in no way obese, some of them have missed out on the course - Application of observation and common sense

margoandjerry · 24/08/2007 12:14

my hv told me my daughter was overweight as she is on the 98th centile but told me they don't measure height any more as it's a "waste of time" even though it would clearly show that she is a tall child and therefore likely to weigh more than a short child

Really, do they contribute anything at all to the sum of human happiness?

fawkeoff · 24/08/2007 12:16

dont listen to ur hv mine diagnosed me with depression on wedensday wtf????

AngharadGoldenhand · 24/08/2007 12:16

No way is she overweight.

They just don't get tall kids, do they?
