lots of previosu threads on this but basically Drs and I disagree that DS2 has dairy intolerance/milk allergy. he is on a mostly dairy free diet. i still give him yoghurts and soft cheese but that seems to be hislimit, anything more than that and he will have stomach ache. For the first time in a long time tonight he has had hot (warm) chocolate and woken twice with stomach ache DEF nt chocolate so must be the milk.

How old is he?

MerlinsBeard · 14/08/2007 22:21

2.4 DP has dairy issues. he too can have a small amount but anymore and he gets stomach cramps. latest DR we saw said they can't get allergies/intolerance that young and family history didn't count

I don't know, MoM, but I can kind of understand why doctors are a little reluctant to diagnose dairy intolerance. It was hardly heard of in my day, and nothing seems to have changed very much since.

If he's been on a largely dairy free diet, couldn't that explain his stomach aches? Simply because he's not used to it?

startouchedtrinity · 14/08/2007 22:27

My dd1 had a lactose intolerance at 6 wks. She outgrew it fairly quickly though.

If you know he has it (sounds like an intolerance rather than an allergy btw) I'd just forget the GPs and get on with it - you seem to know what suits him. Is there any reason you need a doctor's help with this?

WanderingTrolley · 14/08/2007 22:27

Er, babies can be born with intolerances.

Who is your dr?

WanderingTrolley · 14/08/2007 22:28

(a twat, clearly)

And are you a doctor, WT?

Spidermama · 14/08/2007 22:30

Doctors are famously bad on these issues. They do sod all training on food and it's a national scandal how little medical professionals know about allergies and intolerances.

My ds is also dairy intolerant too. I worked out my life long asthma was largely down to dairy intolerance. Of course I have other triggers, but the dairy was really sending my immune system into overload.

MerlinsBeard · 14/08/2007 22:47

Startouched, i initially wanted Drs help with it because i wasn't 100% sure what it was and he had other issues at the time (going from constipated to runny in the space of 2 nappies for one).

Desi thats what i thought at forst but really the on;y thing he has today thats different to normal is cows milk in his hot choc. befre he was on soya he was ongoats milk which was betetr for him but stil gae him the constipation issues.

WT, thats what i called him so the last few times i have seen dofferent ones

KM, i would never fully exclude something frommy childs diet until i was certain that that particular thing causing discomfort. We reduced his dairy as much as possible while stil giving him as balanced a diet as possible - he is extremely fussy. We then swapped from cows to milk to goats mik and saw an improvement and he was a different child when he switched to soya. Iknow that his body can handle some milk/dairy.Tonight was one of those nights where i thought to just check seeing as i didn't know for sure that that was what was causing the problem. although i was almost certain.

I researched carefully and with the help of some knowledgable MNetters, i am going blind with this as the Drs don't want to know

actually i don't "feed him the allergen" its an intolerance. he is fine on the little he has each day.

FGS, i have all day sickness, i am coming down with a bug and he asked with all the limited language skills he as for hot chocloate. i gave it to him and now i know for certain that is what is causing the problem. He isn't going to die from a bit of milk, i will be up a lot in the night and he may be sick. Now i for certain its milk causing that.

MoM, both my dds but esp. dd1 would very often have constipation then runny poo. As this didn't bother her and her weight gain was fine I just carried on as normal. But lactose was suspected as the culprit by my GP.

I am not sure that allergy testing shows up intolerances. For that you need to do an elimination diet and you need professional guidance for that. However I do have a couple of riends who swear by acupuncture as a way of diagnosing intolerances, FWIW.

startouchedtrinity · 14/08/2007 22:59

MoM, should add that my dd outgrew her runny poo cycle at 3.

If you know it is lactose then stick to the laternatives for a while, then try to re-introduce when he is a bit bigger. You can get calcium-fortified soya milk.

FirstAtForty · 14/08/2007 23:02

My DD's reaction to cow's milk protein was absolutely clear cut - between the ages of around 12 and 26 weeks she had around 5 exposures to formula or yoghurt and vomited continuously for several hours after each exposure (she was exclusively bf otherwise).

She is not normally a sicky baby, in fact very rarely vomits at all. She was weaned dairy-free on the advice of a paediatrician, I've been advised that it's something she should grow out of by the age of 5, and that it is best to try and introduce cow's milk gradually from around 18 months as that is supposed to be better for increasing tolerance than keeping off it altogether.

Not sure whether this is the right thing or not, I'm also not sure if it's an allergy or intolerance in the sense that she just doesn't produce the right 'digestive chemicals', either way she has a problem with the digestion of cow's milk protein.

MerlinsBeard · 14/08/2007 23:03

ty startouched trinity, we do have calcium enriched soya. Thats what DP uses. I have had to do elimination with no support so did it very slowly. first thing we did was drop the milk from cows to goats and then to soya. he is so much like a different child i knew thats what it was. we dropped all milk and built it up slowly. His system can manage a small petit filous sized yoghurt and 1 round of bread with thinly spread cheese spread(we use soya marg anyway ebcause of DP).

KM its not helpful, in fact its the opposite.
You're posts are harsh.

As i have said Drs don't want to know so as yet he is undiagnosed professionally.

My GP wasn't particularly knowledgeable on this, but did admit that and referred to a paed after a couple of appointments. I found it was really helpful to keep a detailed diary of exposure and symptoms, it was this that the paed did the diagnosis from, she said that no tests that they could do would be useful. May be worth trying a different GP if you can, or asking your existing one about a referral?

Desiderata · 14/08/2007 23:22

Well, I think there's been some really good advice on here.

Follow your instincts, keep a little in the diet, and try to properly reintroduce when ds2 is older.

I think your approach is sensible, MoM, and I wish you all good luck with it
