Has anyone else been bitten by mosquitoes in the UK recently?

According to my parents, there have been lots of reports of this happening, but I haven't heard any.

I got bitten twice at the start of this week, and was cynical about them actually being from mosquitoes, but last night I heard and then saw one in my room.

Are we being invaded ?

The extra damp conditions are wonderful for them.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/08/2007 18:54

Ah, that could explain it - I'm in Worcester!

yes

there have been some stories in the press about it (I think - can't remember where - may have been a radio report). Something to do with a lot of water sitting around for a bit.

we normally get mosquitos here though so it's not that unusual I don't think

FrayedKnot · 12/08/2007 18:55

Yes, since it stopped rianing and got warm I've been bitten several times

We have had mozzies in Norfolk for several summers

foxinsocks · 12/08/2007 18:59

anthisan cream

vv good for insect bites (also good for nettle stings so useful to have a tube anyway)

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 12/08/2007 18:59

This stuff is brilliant, it works out at about £8.50 a bottle but well worth it

FrayedKnot · 12/08/2007 19:02

Katymac I was bitten in Norfolk at my Mum's

Although we have had a few mozzies at home since

Tea tree works well too

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/08/2007 19:05

I have some good stuff at home that we got in the Virgin Islands (can't remember what it's called), but am at my parents. They had some weird Spanish gel, but it did nothing! They've stopped itching now, so I'm ok as long as they don't bite again.

The mosquito milk doesn't actually contain any milk does it LGJ (not sure whether I need to avoid applied dairy, or just eaten re dd's intolerance)?

No, I think it refers to the colour.

You can find a list of ingredients on line.

BBBee · 12/08/2007 20:29

bizarre as it sounds the stuff called 'so soft' from avon is really good for keeping insects away - they use it in the highlands, a local told me about it and it works wonders without all the nasty chemicals.

BBBee · 12/08/2007 20:31

link about so soft

of might not repel mosquitoes though - could jsut be midges.

themoon66 · 12/08/2007 20:33

Apparently you don't get bitten if you eat Marmite regularly. I have to say, as a marmite addict, I have never had a mozzie bite, either here or abroad.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/08/2007 23:05

I think I'd rather be bitten than forced to eat marmite!

Don't we have mosquitos every year? Trust me, I know, they love my juicy blood. Confused of Kent!

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 12/08/2007 23:10

i had 3 horrible bites last week. i have never been bitten before so had no idea what they were. and unfortunatly i appear to be allergic to them. my arm swelled up for 2 days and i felt off colour as well.

iamasurvivor · 12/08/2007 23:39

i had 3 bites last week and put sudocrem on them, the inflammation was gone my the next morning, fab stuff that sudocrem....its good for sunburn too.

sparkler · 12/08/2007 23:41

The best natural remedy for bites is your own saliva. Really cools it down and stops the itching.

hatwoman · 12/08/2007 23:53

I've seen mozzies in the UK for years. most of them in my bathroom.

themoon66 · 12/08/2007 23:54

Article in sunday times today says Sudocreme is the dog's bollox for spotty skin too... have just told DS (age 15) that he should be smearing on the remains of that grey pot that's been hanging around in the bathroom since his nappy days

sparklygothkat · 12/08/2007 23:58

what do the bites look like? Its just that when we were up north a few weeks back, DD2 erupted with bites on her legs.

We're in Lancs and I got a bite at the weekend that looks remarkably like a mossie bite

(I use spit a lot if treatment is what you're after)
