Shadow on lung, endoscopy next week

My dad is 80 and has a shadow on the lung and back pain, he has had a CAT scan and next they are doing an endoscopy. Is this.likely to be cancer or is there something else it might be? I am worried but prepared for the worst, does anyone have anything they can tell me please?

Bump, anyone?

I have no idea but it's certainly a possibility unfortunately. Just wanted to bump your post for you, and wish him luck x

Bobbiepin · 02/08/2019 13:45

I had shadows on my lungs and it was pneumonia. I hope your dad is ok Flowers

cocomelon23 · 02/08/2019 13:54

My grandad had a shadow on his lung and it was pleurisy

Felina · 02/08/2019 17:40

Went to visit and he seems all right- refusing codeine for pain relief though and sticking to paracetamol.

Back scan on Monday and endoscopy on Tuesday. I wonder how long for results? I didn't know about pleurisy/ pneumonia, thanks for your comments and kind thoughts.

My dad had an endoscopy and the consultant showed me the results then and there. I think it would be realistic to consider cancer as a possibility but hoping that it isn’t for you.

Egghead68 · 03/08/2019 07:02

I hope the results are not what you fear.

Please ensure your father is sedated for his endoscopy. They like to do these procedures unsedated as it is quicker but they are highly unpleasant for most people.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/08/2019 07:09

I can't imagine being able to do a bronchoscopy awake. I am assuming that is what they are doing?

My mother has shadows on her lung. I saw the x-ray and assumed cancer. Life long smoker etc. It wasn't, rather it was focal points of inflammation and crap - why anyone would want to do this to themselves I don't know.

The good thing is they will get a quick diagnosis and come up with a treatment plan for whatever it is.

Felina · 03/08/2019 09:02

Thank you all. Yes they should sedate him. They've said the endoscopy will take 3 hours so am assuming that includes sedation. I dont know all the correct terms but I'm going with endoscopy purely because that's the word mum used, but yes it is the one that goes down the throat. Preparing for worst and hoping for the best. It is helpful to know that there are a number of other things this could turn out to be. You hear all the time about things happening to other people's fathers especially at this age, but something inside me keeps screaming "but this is MY dad! He is different, he's MY dad!" Selfish and childish but those feelings keep taking over.

It is good he is being sedated. If it is conscious sedation he should ask for the maximum possible plus throat spray.

Everything crossed that the news is not too bad.

Felina · 07/08/2019 07:46

An update ,- dad had the endoscopy and they did a biopsy. Will have to go back for the results in 10 days. He was well sedated and it wasn't as bad as he feared, thankfully. It seems a long time to wait for results. If it was really bad, wouldn't they be quicker? Or are they just passing it round the various consultants to analyse results thoroughly? I'm prepared for worst so dont worry about giving honest thoughts if you have any....

not a hcp - but afaik it's quite normal for it to take 7 to 10 days for the pathology labs to finalised the results (the pathology labs will have their own specialist consultants, consultant histopathologists). So I wouldn't read anything at all, good or bad, into that time scale.

Flowersbest wishes to you and your dad

Felina · 07/08/2019 08:31

Thank you!

Egghead68 · 07/08/2019 08:33

Glad it went OK. Fingers crossed for the results being OK too.

Robs20 · 07/08/2019 08:35

Good luck. I hope the results are not what you fear. If its any reassurance my dd had a chest x ray every time she had a chest infection to check for shadows (infection) in the lungs (immunosuppressed so these were life threatening for her). Fingers crossed it is not something too serious.

Felina · 07/08/2019 09:30

Thank you all. It's so helpful to hear from you. I will post again when we have the results Flowers

Update, as promised. It's not good news and they've kept him in. Going to visit today.

Really sorry to hear that. Thoughts with you and your father.

Lisette1940 · 17/08/2019 11:00

Felina I'm so sorry to hear this. Thinking of you and your Dad.

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/08/2019 14:47

So sorry to hear this Felina. I’ve been there. It’s tough.

Felina · 17/08/2019 17:22

Thank you so much. I've been with him for about 4 hours today, mum and sister there now. He's in good spirits! Still waiting to see about further tests etc. and whether he will have surgery on his back.

Are you sure it wasn’t a bronchoscopy he had. This would involve a tube down the airways and into the lungs to take a biopsy. It makes more sense . Endoscopies don’t usually take very long.
Hope you get the results soon

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/08/2019 17:58

It obviously was a bronchoscopy. Endoscopy is just the general terminology that covers all ‘oscopies’.

nooddsocksforme · 17/08/2019 18:55

Was trying to be helpful . Thanks for being so unpleasant Alexa

AlexaAmbidextra · 17/08/2019 19:58

nooddsocks

How was that unpleasant? You’ve taken that completely the wrong way. I wasn’t trying to be unpleasant at all. Confused.
