head lice - full marks mousse and pregnancy

popsycal · 19/09/2004 13:34

Just discovered that Ds has head lice.
Combed his hair with nit comb (nice) and was about to put on full marks mousse but it says only use under doctros advice when pregnant

I am 16 weeks pregnant - can I apply it to ds's hair?

I would use conditioner and comb them out anyway popsycal. It is a drag, but it does work and they don't get immune to being squished. I'm not that worried about 'chemicals' in the general run of things but I do prefer to keep my kids heads away from insecticide

popsycal · 19/09/2004 13:37

ah - fair point!!!
i bought some conditioner too......just wanted MN wisdom before I did it
Am a head lice virgin
hope i dont get them

I never have and dh has had them twice, and we are quite a 'huggy' family. They are horrid little things but I got an odd pleaseure from sorthing the little devils out on my own! The first time my poor dd was crawling before I noticed. I felt terible, and we shifted them no problem with the combing. Takes a load of time tho.

popsycal · 19/09/2004 13:45

was about to get ds's hair cut this week as it is getting so long
guess that is a no-no though now!

I now swear by the electronic nit combs. Spent all summer wet combing, making no difference, but the electronic one has sorted the problem out in a couple of goes.

popsycal · 19/09/2004 16:16

what is the electronic one??

OP posts:
littlemissbossy · 19/09/2004 16:34

you can buy electronic ones from boots for £21.99, look on www.boots.com

popsycal · 19/09/2004 16:35

thanks
will see how we go this week and buy if needed!

Electronic nit comb from boots, costs £20. Used on dry hair. Lets out ahigh pitched buzz, and stops when it hits a louse, so you know you have got one. Electrocutes the buggers. Quite satisfying seeing htem coming out dead, or with maimed legs so they can't run away.

One for sale in Argos

popsycal · 19/09/2004 16:39

oooo like the electroocution aspect

Agree with hmb, nit comb and lots of conditioner every day. It very effective. My kids hated the buzzing sound of the electronic ones and I found it made the hair very 'static', thus even more difficult to use.

lou33 · 19/09/2004 17:42

Mine actually queue up to have a go! No static here either, but I guess it would depend on hair type etc. Two of mine have long hair as well, and haven't had any problems with it either, as long as it is properly brushed beforehand

roisin · 19/09/2004 18:43

I would recommend the combing/conditioner route too - slap loads on as it makes them immobile, and easy to get out. You need to keep combing every 2-3 days as the eggs hatch out. DSs have had them once each, and we got them clear fairly quickly without resorting to chemicals.

I've never had them myself ... despite paranoid itching when I knew the boys had them, and for weeks afterwards

WideWebWitch · 19/09/2004 19:11

Agree with everyone and really wouldn't go for the chemicals popsycal. You don't need to anyway, combing works.

popsycal · 19/09/2004 20:42

did conditioner and combing tonight......
couldnt see anymore eggs and seemed to have got rid of the crawly things

probably missed loads though
ds keeps saying 'poorly head mammy' and giving me the nit comb
think i have been overdoing it a bit lol

OP posts:
hmb · 19/09/2004 20:47

You may well find some more of the little crawlers next time when you comb, but these will be smaller. Each time they should get smaller, if you get another big one you either missed it or (more likely sadly) you dd has been re-infected. Happy combing.

popsycal · 20/09/2004 19:26

well
i did the conditioner thing again tonight and not one creepy crawly or egg (that I could find anyway~!!!!)
really hope I caught it before a huge outbreak...

will keep doing it every other day for the rest of the week!

Tessiebear · 20/09/2004 19:29

I found that the hairs that had eggs on do not come out with combing - to get them before they hatched i usually had to literally pull them out of DS's hair - sometimes the actual hair came out as well!

dolally · 20/09/2004 21:43

Do you gals put the conditioner on wet or dry hair??

.. two of my 3 have had headlice for three or more weeks, I have spent a fortune on shampoos and creams, and hours combing hair, changing pillowcases, and they still have them. I am now going to try the conditioner route, though I guess the problem is always the eggs, and as Tassiebear says, they cling to the hair, pass through the comb and presumably are resistent to all the chemicals i'm throwing on my dds' heads.

I even covered one dd's hair in redwine vinegar the otherday. I simply do not know what to do and am fed up with spending all this money. I follow the instructions to the letter and it DOES NOT WORK!!

WideWebWitch · 20/09/2004 22:04

dolally, combing does work, you need to use a proper nit comb though and do it religously for about 10 days.

dolally · 20/09/2004 22:35

If they were boys, i could shave their heads. Should the hair be wet and is it every day for ten days? Thanks.....

dolally · 20/09/2004 22:36

also... i have a nitcomb that came with one of the products NIX (it's called here). or is somethiing else a proper nitcomb

popsycal · 21/09/2004 13:50

just to update
did ds's hair again last night (and mine and dh's) and not a nit or egg in sight

fingers crossed please1
glad i avoid the chemicals! thanks for the advice

dolally · 22/09/2004 21:24

sorry to go on but do you gals do the conditioner with wet or dry hair - maybe it's not relevant? Glad to hear it's worked popsycal, you've inspired me. I used the chemical products on my kids two days ago but I just know the lice will be back so am really going to go the conditioner route.
