DD has chicken pox .... rash is everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE!!

yeahinaminute · 30/07/2007 14:54

She's really quite up-beat in herself but she has the rash all over her body, face legs, arms and in her mouth, scalp and poor thiong in her fandango .... So, apart from baths and industrial quantities of Calamine - should I give her anti - histamine's too ??

So, any views on the efficacy of anti histamine to ease the itching ???

I used Priton for my little one when he got the pox and it worked wonders, he had a couple of uncomfortable nights but the priton and the bicarb baths helped.

brimfull · 30/07/2007 15:18

yes I used it with ds,he was covered aswell.Try to keep her as cool as possible aswell.
Cetirizine doesn't cause drowsiness like piriton.

MrsBigD · 30/07/2007 15:21

used piriton on dd and ds and it defo helped with the itching. Pharmacist recommended it. Also as you probably know... oatmeal baths. Just had to keep ds from trying to eat it!

yeahinaminute · 30/07/2007 15:22

Ok - I'm off to the chemists as soon as I finish work - thanks - I wasn't sure it would work but I am persuaded now ... anything to ease her through the night mainly - poor little pox ridden lamb !!!

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 30/07/2007 15:23

Piriton or Cetrazine depending how old she is (I think but am not sure that they have to be a bit older for Cetrazine)

Definitely do it. DS was 100% fine when on Piriton and would wake up screaming when it wore off...

yeahinaminute · 30/07/2007 15:24

I'm alternating oatmeal and bicarb baths at the moment about every 4 hours or so to help the worst of the itching

Ok dumb question alert here - I have been giving her a bit of Calpol before bed to help ... shall I continue with that and the anti - H or just anti - H ??

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 30/07/2007 15:25

Both if she has a temp - if the temp has gone probably OK with just anti-H.

yeahinaminute · 30/07/2007 15:26

No her temp has come down - so I'll try her with the AH tonight and see how we go ... update from DH tells me it's all in her poor little bum now too !!!

auntyspan · 30/07/2007 15:28

Can I just ask what the first symptoms are? DD very under the weather at the mo and it's going round nursery....

ScoobyDooooo · 30/07/2007 15:30

Ds had it just how you describe he was covered from head to toe, willy bum everywhere, he was very uncomfortable, i went to the chemist & was told to give piriton syroup & i was given these big sacets of this oatmeal stuff to add to his bath, they help & i was also giving him calpol.

Hope she feels better soon, it's awful seeing them covered in them isn't it.

inamuckingfuddle · 30/07/2007 15:34

DT2 had it as you describe, dosed up on piriton and alternate calpol/brufen to keep temp down, she went downhill after about 3 days of it and ended up on ABs so keep an eye on her, it can get nasty

yeahinaminute · 30/07/2007 15:39

Thanks everyone -

Well she was whingey last Weds /Thursday and had what i thought was a small spot behind her ear - Friday morning the spots were on her neck, chest and a couple behind her ears and on her face - By Friday evening she was a pizza !!

She's off her food ( which is highly unusual for DD ) and has had a temperature - but having the spots in her mouth and her nose isn't helping.

But I have to say there is not much of her which isn't covered in it.

The calamine aqueous cream is good, and much easier to put on than the 'traditional' calamine lotion.

chinwag · 30/07/2007 16:20

I just used Piriton, Calpol and Neurofen! Didn't bother with Calamine...they hated having it on cos it's cold...didn't seem worth the hassle.

ScoobyDooooo · 30/07/2007 17:32

I also brought the calamine aqueous cream because ds would not have the calamine lotion stuff put on it worked much better & was much easier to apply because he had so many.

yeahinaminute · 31/07/2007 09:24

Well - I got the Piriton and Calamine Aqueous Cream - and combined with a nice cool oatmeal bath - she slept through without waking with her skin on fire at 00 ungodly hour !!

Thanks for the tips !!

ms ds has chicken pox too! bless him....he hasn't been that itchy as of yet but i have the piraton and i am covering him in calamine.... just very annoying staying in for so long and boring for him ..bless him x

Biglips · 31/07/2007 09:43

mine had just got over it...she had it everywhere and really bad but now its flaking off as we are on week 3 now. I use calamine thick cream for her body, calamine lotion for her hair but i left one out for her to scratch so she couldnt scratch her body - its works for my DD and she wore a long cotton big nightie all day. i changed her bedding and her nightie twice a day plus 2 baths a day too! Also used piriton which you are using too......

plus i spoilt her abit too!

Biglips · 31/07/2007 09:45

plus she sweated thru her bed for 4 nights and was off her foods for 5 days plus she didnt want a drink either but i did left some foods out and her drink....seh even knocked back chocolates too!

yeahinaminute · 31/07/2007 09:48

Ah - the off the food thing - we have that too - probably because she has quite a few spots in her mouth - poor lamb

Right the spots in her hair - how do I "treat" those - I haven't washed it but have rinsed it in warm water - should I try a calamine "rinse" ??

And yes - she has been a bit spoilt

OP posts:
Biglips · 31/07/2007 10:11

i just use the calamine lotion from a bottle and dab it on her head with cotton pads. You must check for any near her eye as its dangerous as my dd had one just on her bottom of her eye rim which i had to keep an eye on it! but she was ok

yeahinaminute · 31/07/2007 10:18

Thanks biglips - she does have one massive one at the corner of her right eye - which I've managed to avoid and it's crusted over now....... She's desperate for me to wash her very long hair but I'm sticking to rinsing it - I'll pin her down and get the calamine on !

God - it's a bloody palaver isn't it !!

OP posts:
Leati · 31/07/2007 10:18

Put socks on her hands to prevent scarring. An oatmeal bath may help too.
Here is a link that tells you how to do that.

yeahinaminute · 31/07/2007 10:23

Thanks Leati - we're on day 5 of oatmeal baths - with an occassional bicarb one too - it's just her bloody hair that's driving me and her bonkers !!!
