Burned my fingers (and the palm of my hand) on Sat at midday, the little finger has a gauze thing on and is Ok, I can't bend it though, sometimes tingles. The ring finger has blistered (possibly becuase I took my ring off). I stupidly put a blister plaster on it too. The blister is huge, please please tell me I can pop it, please.

noooo, don't do it

harrypotterdies · 23/07/2007 09:59

no its natures way of protecting the area - don't do it

TaLcYo · 23/07/2007 10:00

had a look...you poor thing! ouch!

don't pop it intentionally....the blister keeps the area sterile whilst it heals.

totaleclipse · 23/07/2007 10:00

Does'nt matter what we say, you know you will, its just too tempting

TaLcYo · 23/07/2007 10:00

..will hurt more...and could get infected

daisyandbabybootoo · 23/07/2007 10:02

ouch....cover it up and leave it alone. If you pop it'll be raw and sore and may get infected.

mymama · 23/07/2007 10:02

burn blister = second degree burns. ly found this out when ds2 had a steam burn. Dr advised that a blister on a burn is second degree and needs to be seen to. We left it 24 hours to see a doctor and the doctor said he was very close to a skin graft .

So in a long winded way....don't pop it, treat it.

Where on your fingers is the burn?

NotQuiteCockney · 23/07/2007 10:03

It's a second-degree burn if it blisters up right away. Otherwise it's third. [firefighter's daughter]

Blister plasters are good - why are you regretting putting one on?

mygirllollipop · 23/07/2007 10:48

What shall I cover it up with then? It's in the way of my little finger, I can't bear them touching. the blister is getting bigger too.
The blister plaster thing was because it hadn't blistered until I took it off so I thought that pulled the blister out IYSWIM.
Or should I make an appointment to see the practice nurse?

It didn't blister straight away, had under tap for 30mins then in a cup of ice cubes and cold water until I went to bed then blistered after I took the blister plaster off. The little finger had this sticky medical gauze on it (had left over from when DD1 had an operation - 5yrs ago -oops!) so little finger hasn't blistered.
Mymamas - pics of burns on profile.

NO NO NO

Biglips · 23/07/2007 11:03

OUCH!!! what a painful look!....you will be in more pain if u bust it!

NotQuiteCockney · 23/07/2007 11:35

Blister plaster is the best thing, imo. Just put it on and leave it on. You're not meant to take them off.

NotQuiteCockney · 23/07/2007 11:35

(I should say, I've only used blister plasters for foot blisters from hiking etc. But I think they're good for burns, too.)

TaLcYo · 23/07/2007 12:20

yes!..go to chemists..get blister plasters..
How did you do it? looks awful.

mymama · 23/07/2007 12:22

Just had a look at the pictures (gorgeous dc by the way ).

Definitely do NOT pop it. Yours are the same place ds2 had his. His blister popped and broke the skin. We had to have them dressed every day for a week at the Dr's. Dr was worried that as the skin healed and tightened he was at risk of having some restricted movement in the joint of the fingers. Not sure if that was because he was still growing or in general.

Can't hurt to see your practice nurse. If anything they can give you some proper burns cream/gauze to put on it.

Roskva · 23/07/2007 12:28

No, don't burst it. Apparently it takes new skin 3-4 days to form inside a blister (which is basically a sterile environment), but it takes much longer for the skin to heal if it is exposed to the air. I know it hurts, but it will get better quicker if you leave it - just cover it with a gauzy finger bandage.

MadEyeMacdog · 23/07/2007 12:31

If you absolutely must burst it, sterilise a needle in a flame.
Pop the blister with the sterile needle and cover with a sterile dressing.
Best thing would be to go to your GP practice nurse and ask her advice

mygirllollipop · 23/07/2007 12:52

I know I wasn't supposed to take the blister plaster off but it was getting so hot in there even though it was the day after. I have used them for foot blisters before and liked them then!
I already have some more blister plasters.
How did I do it? Sigh - some oil splashed up from a fry up which DH wanted.
You lot are keeping me sane and convincing me not to pop (yet!) I may need support at 2 am though!
Mymama - don't fancy having to traipse me and the 4 DD's down the GP every day to have it dressed - remind me of that next time I say I want to pop it! I'll try to make app for practice nurse for more gauze. I have put some on and put micropore over, the blister is now annoying me less (prob cause it's not getting knocked). I also put some moisturising cream on the unblistered finger (hope I'm allowed to) and it might just be me but the discolouration seems better and I can move the joints a bit better.

TaLcYothetrashheap · 23/07/2007 12:58

ooouuuch!

mymama · 23/07/2007 13:38

Keep it covered. The air is what makes it hurt. Not sure if that is stating the obvious but I didn't know that before ds2 burnt his.

Roskva · 23/07/2007 13:42

Wet a clean flannel and ring it out, fold it in 2 and pop it in the freezer. When your finger reallllly hurts, take out the frozen flannel and wrap it round your finger. Should take the pain away for a bit. The flannel can then go back in the freezer for when you need it again.

mygirllollipop · 24/07/2007 08:02

Good tip Roskva!
Mymama - the first day it seemed to be the air then I'm not sure after that but sounds likely.
Well DH came home and took DD4 from me and burst the blister - it had been leaking a few times too. He was realy apologetic! But it's back again this morning. So I know even if it gets in my way there is no escaping this blister!
Also I have walked into the car window (opens outward) and dropped a tin of spaghetti on my toe. It's not my week.

OP posts:
mymama · 24/07/2007 09:25

Bad luck comes in threes. Sounds like you have filled your quota for the week .

Must be the week for burns. My dh's nephew works in a fast food restaurant and splashed oil onto his face and arm on the weekend. He has 2nd degree burns to 80% of his face and 30% of his arm. Have seen photos - looks very painful.

mygirllollipop · 24/07/2007 10:35

Mymama - that's a whole lot of oil, sounds very painful. I hope that us it for the week (year/decade!). I had to bath DD4 this morning and as I was getting her dressed I really burst the blister this time. I flamed some tweezers and put hte skin back over (had folded up) to act as a barrier then dressed. It is weeping like hell! Rang GP and v unhelpful receptionist can't get me in to see nurse so I hope my dressing is OK, though the weeping is coming through already.
