5 in 1 reassurance please?

dd has had 2 doses of the old style jabs & oral polio.
today i was warned that her 3 set may well be the new 5in1.

I know the differences are dead polio, mercury free & DTaP.

what i want to know is will it matter significantly that she is completing the course with something different?

please don't turn this into a vacc debate I just want reassuring that it will make no differnce to her levels of immunity post vaccs.

immunity levels are never guaranteed anyway with any vaccination. The pertussis component is different- but pertussis is never all that great anyway immunity wise (about 70% effective for wP). When they gave the hib booster they said that one reason it may have been needed was because the aP had been used for primary injections. However this was always a "may" - and you should ask your GP for further clarification. It was their justification for using the DTwP. Maybe they've decided they'll just stick with giving hib boosters to get round that?

Sorry no straightforward answer, but things you can ask your GP.

BTW Twiglett- you're the expert on this- do you know when the new 5 in 1 will be available? My SIL's baby will be due vax in about 5 weeks obviously there's a thimerosil issue in our family.

oh damm that's going to cause a family row then! (DH is all for "telling" sil not to have thimerosil blah blah blah whereas I think we should wait to be asked for advice- they know we think vaccinations were involved with ds1, and they know we think it is linked to autoimmunity and they obviously know SIL has type 1 diabetes and they know our phone number!) I was hoping they would be in within the next 5 weeks so the issue wouldn't arise. Mind you if bogwoppit has been told she may get the new ones then they may be through in time.

Having said that the new ones contain traces of thimerosil anyway apparently! (as the thimerosil is removed rather than never added).

jimjams, got sent a wodge of stuff from DoH yesterday, it says "supplies of the vaccines will be delivered from 27th September for introduction into the routine childhood programme" - talking about:
Pediacel (DTaP/IPV/Hib) for babies
Repevax (dTaP/IPV) for pre-school children
and Revaxis (Td/IPV) for teenagers.

oh that's OK then - thanks bundle- that should persuade dh to keep his mouth shut!

sq - I get mine from Doctor Kellys on London Wall. We see Dr Gawne. It's £37 a time for the jab and £10 a time consultation fee and the phone number is 0207 638 2999. They need to order the Infanrix in so make sure you call at least 1 week before you want it.

this is a disgrace!! You should not have to pay for infanrix!! They are available on the NHS and your GP's will have a fridge full that they use for pre-school boosters (until the new 5 in 1 is introduced).

You used to just have to request it. This changed when they introduced the hib booster. One of the suggestions they gave for hib proving to be less effecive thah first thought was because they thought the dtap may interact somehow to make it less effective (which is strange as we are told the MMR combination is definitely safe etc etc). So now drs are less keen to give it. They can though without any problems, special considerations etc, so if they refuse they are basically playing silly buggers.

I used to be very pro-vaccination socci- changed with ds1 who is fairly severely autistic. We suspect that thimerosil was his first hit- and he fits the profile of the recent colombia mouse paper pretty well. Did a lot of research when ds2 was born 2 and a half years ago and he is unvaccinated, ds3 will be unvaccinated as well.

Jimjams · 15/09/2004 20:30

the problem is with the wP in older children- P is always one of the more dangerous jabs, and as twiglett said the number of children having side effects to wP increases with age (and of course pertussis isn't really a dangerous disease for older children- only babies).

Marina · 16/09/2004 09:45

SQ we have been happy Direct Health 2000 clients since ds had his single jabs there, they are great. Dd will be starting her MMR single shots there this winter.

twiglett, thanks so much for that. i'm sorry for the delay in replying to you - i only get a small amount of time on mumsnet these days and with so many active threads now it's very easy to miss things.

could you please (or anyone else) confirm if the Hib and Polio vaccines also contain thiomersil? could i just get the "bog-standard" versions of those?

also, i'm freaking a bit as dd was 8 wks yesterday - now i feel under time pressure to get her done, even if this means getting the DTwP...

would it really matter it she got done next week or a bit later in order to give me more time to sort this out with the GP?

thanks so much.
