5 in 1 reassurance please?

dd has had 2 doses of the old style jabs & oral polio.
today i was warned that her 3 set may well be the new 5in1.

I know the differences are dead polio, mercury free & DTaP.

what i want to know is will it matter significantly that she is completing the course with something different?

please don't turn this into a vacc debate I just want reassuring that it will make no differnce to her levels of immunity post vaccs.

thank you, socci

would really appreciate some advice on the Hib and Polio or a pointer where to go to look this up.

TIA

ps - ok i'm sure there are loads of threads on this and it's my pet peeve when people don't search... but... i'm pleading smallbabylackoftimemillionsofthreads...

Current hib and polio do not contain thimerosil. I think early versions of hib did but not any more. Ask to check the ingredients before injections though.

The reactions to the P part of DTwP become worse with age- but in terms of years not months iyswim (that's why the pre-school boosters were DTaP). Won;t be an issue with the new 5 in 1 anyway as its no longer wP. Leaving too long a gap between the three separate shots increases the likelihood of an allergic type reaction to the tetanus component- but doesn't matter when you actually start the shots iyswim. They used to leave longer than a month anyway- plenty of leeway there.

thank you

they are introducing a 6 in 1 here next Jan - instead of 2 jabs and oral polio - all in the 1 along with hib. They are also introducing prevenar - which is a pneumococcal vac for all children - dd has just had this as she is at rosk. However if you want the six in 1 you will have to pay for it at this stage... not available on medicare ( equivalent of NHS) be intrigued to see how the 5 in 1 goes as I will have a babe ready for vacs come jan and not sure whether to have it all in the one job or do the two jabs and the polio separate.

Would not worry about the time limit - my dd was almost 4 months before she had her first set of vacs.

kbaby · 24/09/2004 20:50

weve had the old hib 8weeks ago and were now waiting until the new 5in1 to complete the rest of the course. Does this mean she could now have a alergic reaction because of the length of the gap?

Jimjams · 25/09/2004 09:20

unlikely kbaby (it would only be to the tetanus bit). You could ask your GP - but they routinely used to leave 3 months anyway.

dinny · 15/10/2004 20:26

SQ, did you have the 5 ib 1 jab in the end?

serenequeen · 16/10/2004 21:13

hi everyone

events have taken their course and for other reasons (dd's prolonged production of green poo!) have held off vaccinations for now.

meanwhile, the 5 in 1 jabs have arrived... ok they are without mercury ( jimjams - it is removed rather than never having been in it) so that is one thing off my mind... but i don't like the idea of giving her so many things at once...

is there any evidence i can bring to bear on this? i feel silly going to gp and saying "er, don't you think 5 at once is a bit much?" she says, "well, they have researched it, haven't they?" ... and i have no response to that!

thanks all

Jimjams · 16/10/2004 22:18

I think a lot of people feel the same SQ. They have been giving this many at once for ages though- just not from one vial, so not much difference- just the removal of choice.

serenequeen · 16/10/2004 22:20

hi jimjams

thanks for that. i will just have to see what i can find on it on the internet.

btw - when is your baby due? i'm sorry i have forgotten.

Jimjams · 16/10/2004 22:40

New Year's Eve! Oh joy It's a section though so will be here by then.....

serenequeen · 16/10/2004 22:52

why a section? hope all goes v. well for you how on earth are you managing with 2 littlies? i couldn't manage ds which is one reason i am reluctant to do it again (see how do you know if one baby is enough thread - can't remember exact title...)

Jimjams · 16/10/2004 23:00

I'm not managing! Especially since ds1 is into climbing everything and needs to be lifted down (or throws himself off things onto me mainly). This pregnancy is not easy have to say! Spent most of it in a foul mood Section because I've already had 2- they're not keen to give you the choice third time round. I know I could insist on a trial, but not confident enough to without the hospital's support iyswim. HOwever ds1's antics seem to set off frequent strong braxton hicks so wouldn't be surprised if this one put in an early appearance (eek)

serenequeen · 16/10/2004 23:05

well that is a good reason to have a section! not that one is needed she said hurriedly...

i think your ds1 is 5? yes i can totally see that. they get so heavy...

my ds is 3 and insisted on climbing all over me, hanging off my neck, arm whatever part of my body he could. he's somewhat a bolter and i ended up having to sprint after him twice when i was about 5m gone and after that did not feel confident enough to take him out on my own

i was also in a foul mood for most of the pg but that was completely down to hormones and not circumstances!

once again, i take my hat off to you and marvel at your coping skills.

hugs to you, sqxxx
