Because it fecking hurts!

TheArmadillo · 20/07/2007 21:05

Can't.

Had blood transfusion when I had ds.

Hulababy · 20/07/2007 21:06

I haven't yet. When I was first at uni and tried I didn't weigh enough apparantly. I have since tried twice and failed. The blood stops coming out about half way in. Never managed to give full quota After having DD my iron count was too low. And now I can't as waiting for an op. Will try again next year hopefully.

mytwopenceworth · 20/07/2007 21:06

Because I have a full on phobia of needles into veins that makes me cry and throw up. I have discharged myself against medical advice on more than one occasion rather than face blood tests. I am incapable of being rational when faced with a blood test. No way on this earth could I go and volunteer myself.

sparklygothkat · 20/07/2007 21:07

I'm too small

PersonalHouseElf · 20/07/2007 21:07

Can't for a year. Just had a tattoo so someone remind me this time next year!
Have donated a few times though.

moondog · 20/07/2007 21:07

What,if you've had blood you can't give?

I volunteered even thoguh big scaredy cat but I can't as spent childhood in the Tropics and go to lots of malaria infested places.

I recall the nurse told me to come back in 2013.

canmummy · 20/07/2007 21:07

Can't because
a) I'm diabetic
b) had 5 blood transfusions after dd2

JoMa · 20/07/2007 21:08

I want to, but they won't let me. I have Narcolepsy (a sleep disorder) and they were worried I might fall asleep so have banned me from giving blood for life

REBELlatrixlestrange · 20/07/2007 21:08

Used to.

Can't now because I had a transfusion after giving birth to DS2.

choosyfloosy · 20/07/2007 21:08

Because I did do one, without childcare - what a bright idea - cue ds at 18 months running around the couches risking pulling needles out of the poor other donors. I'll go again once I can organise childcare or they organise it for you.

If you've been given blood since 1980 (I think) you are banned from donating.

I think its because of the risk of CJD.

GrimoireThief · 20/07/2007 21:09

I kept failing the Hg test though my iron levels are ok albeit borderline. I was able to give blood about 1 in 4 times I tried so I stopped. Can you give blood if you bf?

PinkPotterWeasleys · 20/07/2007 21:09

Desiderata that's rubbish! lol

nutcracker · 20/07/2007 21:09

I'm not sure I can, have type C anti bodies in my blood. I did email and ask once but got a standard 'you'll need to have tests' reply and never followed it up.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 20/07/2007 21:09

i did, until the regs came in about no donations if youve had a blood transfusion. had one when i was 9 - fell through galss door.

mosschops30 · 20/07/2007 21:11

I have tried a couple of times now but am permanently anaemic so they never want mine.

fishie · 20/07/2007 21:12

yes md. doesn't exactly engender confidence in the whole system.

i do give blood when i can fit it in and have been doing so for 20 years, but only about 20 donations in total. even with the appointment system it takes rather too long and i think the whole thing needs a radical rethink.

Blandmum · 20/07/2007 21:15

have given over 60 units.

I used to donate plasma for a child with leukemia when I was a student. they used to call me in every few weeks to donate plasma and platelets. No idea what happened to the child

I want to but they don't want me. After about 5 sessions, each of which I had to lie down like a delicate flower for about an hour afterwards before the dizziness went they politely told me it probably wasn't for me.

mosschops30 · 20/07/2007 21:18

However Im still disgusted that homosexual men are still not allowed to give blood as they still base their criteria on some 1980's research despite the fact that the majority of new HIV infections are among heterosexuals.

twofalls - I've come over a bit peculiar a few times afterwards! It's so embarrassing when they whisk you onto a bed in the middle of the room!
