'Someone' has eaten uncooked fish fingers...

I have discovered an empty packet of 10 frozen Birds Eye Cod Fish Fingers. Because of who was at home at the time, either a young DC or the cat, or both of them together, must have eaten them. Obviously neither of them can tell me who, but the way the cardboard box is ripped looks like the DC has opened it rather than the cat. I don't know if the DC opened and ate them, the DC opened but the cat ate them, or the DC opened and they shared them. The packet had been out of a freezer for a couple of hours, so would have been softer than frozen, but hadn't yet been cooked. I am worried about the health implications - for example food poisoning, upset stomachs or worse, although I imagine freezing would have killed any parasites and bacteria? - and searching online hasn't provided anything helpful. Any medics or others with relevant experience who can advise please?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks Grace. They'd been out of the shop freezer for a couple of hours by accident, so would probably have been softer than when fully frozen. I think the cat would have tackled them, given the chance. The DC too would just assume they were there to eat, like FFs usually are, not knowing they have to be cooked in a hot oven first! No ill effects so far - trying not to worry.

cats will definitely eat frozen stuff...my cat found and ate a very generously sized bit of coley I was defrosting on the worktop for both cats to have as a treat over a couple of days

I asked dh what he had done with it as it was MIA, then we spotted a teeny bit of fishy ice cube on the floor, and then the virtually comatose cat with a huge stomach sleeping off his gargantuan chilled luncheon.

BBInGinDrinking · 19/05/2019 17:47

Oh dear! Any ill effects from eating frozen, MsMighty?

An update. As I was still worrying about it, after tea I decided to leave another pack of FFs out, in plain sight of DC, and to leave the room with everyone else, but to watch what happened from just outside. Sure enough, the box was ripped open, a fishfinger extracted, and was clearly about to be eaten before I dashed in and grabbed it just in time. Further evidence that DC had earlier eaten at least one or some of the FFs was provided by a wee with a decidedly fishy aroma. So there we have it, the guilty party.

I wish I'd discovered they'd been fed to or stolen by the cat, but at least now I know. No ill effects otherwise, so far, but I'm keeping a close eye on DC and a sick bowl close by too.

We live and learn as parents, and I'm definitely still learning after a good few years of it. Thanks to pps for sensible, helpful, supportive and humorous replies. Hopefully no harm done, but we'll have to see what the night and the next couple of days bring.

Are you saying your DC ate ten whole fish fingers?

I'm impressed, I can only manage about four on a sandwich Grin

BBInGinDrinking · 19/05/2019 20:31

I'm not sure, Sneaks ! I'm really still hoping the cat ate some of them....

I absolutely agree - ten would be an awful lot, especially in a short space of time.

No bread though, which I think makes a big difference.

How is the DC old enough to reach the counter top and rip open a packet of fish fingers, but not old enough to know they have to be cooked? I’m not even sure my 4 year old could reach a box on the counter and rip it open!

SneakyGremlins · 19/05/2019 20:42

Did a bottle of ketchup vanish from the fridge? Grin

BBInGinDrinking · 19/05/2019 20:42

Not sure where I said counter top?

How old ?
My dd is 20
And would have probably had no clue fish fkngers needed cooking until
She was about 17 😂

mummyhaschangedhername · 19/05/2019 20:47

I'm impressed after 10 they went back for more. If it makes you feel any better I once got called into school as my child had eaten "a significant quantity" of soil 😂... I've also seen patients eat entire tubs of sudocream with no ill effects.

BBInGinDrinking · 19/05/2019 20:47

We haven't got any in the house Sneaks, but it probably would have done, given the chance - the pair of them working as a team, because I'm sure the cat would like it too! 😆

Nah, they will be wedged behind your radiators, your DS will have had a lovely time posting them through the gap between the wall and radiator.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 19/05/2019 20:53

I've eaten frozen dish fingers while a little drunk. No ill effects!

ASnowballsChance · 19/05/2019 20:54

What time did this happen? I would have expected them to have come back up within 6 - 8hrs if they were going to make an appearance?

BBInGinDrinking · 19/05/2019 20:54

I have teens and get where you're coming from, QOD!

And after eating tea too, mummy. Thanks, that definitely does make me feel better, but I hope your DC was ok?!

My money would have been on the cat. My cat once ate half a kg bag of uncooked rice (his brother seems to have opened it for him and then sat back and watched him make a tit of himself, as siblings do). To be fair, they'd both just been neutered and I was only giving them little bits of food because the vet said that their appetites would take a while to come back. This turned out to be incorrect. At the time of the rice incident, I was at the vet with my third cat who'd eaten a bit of a poisonous houseplant while I was picking the boys up after their ops. I came home, found youngest boy vomiting blood and rushed straight back to the vet, where he was diagnosed as a greedy little shit.

Did I mention I fucking hate cats? (and love the very bones of them, of course!)

mummyhaschangedhername · 19/05/2019 23:22

Haha ... yes he was absolutely fine. Wasn't even ill. I have 4 children though, so I kind of just go with the flow, unless it was a battery or bleach or something then I wouldn't worry too much.

What an appetite though, they put my soil eating child to shame 😂 you can eat fish raw though can't you, isn't that what sushi is?

BBInGinDrinking · 20/05/2019 15:26

No news is good news! Another fishy-perfumed wee from DC, but nothing else untoward so far, and eating normally. I am starting to wonder whether a 'bunged up' situation has been caused however! Thanks again to everyone who has helped, one way or another! Flowers

CottonSock · 20/05/2019 15:30

My guess is it will be fine. We eat sushi afterall

Rangeloaf · 20/05/2019 17:35

I’m so confused. Can’t you just ask them if they ate them? If they’re too young to answer they need to be supervised more so they don’t eat 10 frozen fish fingers.....

Gingerkittykat · 20/05/2019 21:38

I would say it would be unlikely to be the cat since they would leave claw marks over the packaging when opening them, something I know from bitter experience.

I'm quite surprised either could eat ten without leaving crumbs or half eaten bits lying around the floor though.

Strugglingonagain · 20/05/2019 21:45

Blatant placemark incase anything else happens..

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 20/05/2019 22:33

They are precooked! I saw it on that Greg Wallace factory programme. They smoosh all the fillets of fish together, cover them in omega three stuff, coat them in breadcrumbs then flash fry them and blast chill them to get it all to stick together and kill any bacteria. That’s why if you snap a frozen one fresh from the packet it isn’t all semi-transparent fish, like uncooked fish would be, but is already white.
