What's the current thinking on treatment of verrucas?

DS (4 1/2) has what I think is a verruca on his heel.

When I had these as a kid, we had to have all sorts of revolting things done ... have things moved on?

What I'm really hoping is that I can leave it and it'll go away of its own accord ... any chance that that's going to happen?

That's current advice!

Is it really? What about the contagiousness aspect? Ds1 has one and I've been treating it - mainly because I don't want anyone else (especially us!) to catch it.

Furball · 13/07/2007 19:10

ds (5) has had one for yonks, finally got round to buy some freezing spray from Boots for £10 when i went to put it on, it had gone!

mears · 13/07/2007 19:11

Definiely leave it alone unless it is causing pain. If it is, go to a chirpodist rather than treat it yourself.

LoveMyGirls · 13/07/2007 19:17

Banana skin on it each night is supposed to help.

ProfessorGrammaticus · 13/07/2007 19:20

I used Scholl Seal snd Heal on DS1s - chiropodist told me to. Scrape with pumice-type foot file in the bath, then apply. Shifted it and also reduced chance of him infecting anyone else.

I used everything going on my DD's verruca including a few things that were suggested here, then somebody recommended putting nail varnish on it and within a week it was gone.

ahundredtimes · 13/07/2007 20:38

Nail varnish? That's a good one. I've used tea tree oil in the past, soak a plaster then put it on. It seems to work.

ahundredtimes · 13/07/2007 20:39

But not to be used, according to my friend, on pubescent boys as it will make them grow breasts

tortoise · 13/07/2007 20:39

I took DS2 to the Dr in the end because bazzucca stuff wasn't shifting it and DS2 was moaning it hurt.
He froze it and is doing it again in 2 weeks time. He did say it doesn't have a great success rate though.

RubeusDuck · 13/07/2007 20:41

Tried the banana skin thing for months on ds1 ... did bugger all. Wartners did the trick though (although it did take the full 3 applications, but I think that's because we'd left it "untreated" for so long)

TheChamberofCarrots · 13/07/2007 20:43

ds1 has one that bazuka won't get rid of. Nail varnish makes them grow breasts?

ahundredtimes · 13/07/2007 20:45

lol no Mrs C, tea-tree oil makes them grow breasts. There was research done you know, in America.

TheChamberofCarrots · 13/07/2007 20:49

Ha, 100x, thought I was going to have to tell ds1 he can't wear nail varnish to the disco! Phew.

PigeonPie · 13/07/2007 20:51

Banana skin is the only thing which got rid of my nephew's verrucas.

TheChamberofCarrots · 13/07/2007 20:53

what is in the banana skin? Can't you do something 'druggy' with them too?

suzi2 · 13/07/2007 20:54

I'm trying breastmilk on DHs one. It worked for a wart I had. He's tried every other treatment going and can't quite shift it. I reckon it's been there years now. Might give nail varnish a go too...

mabelmurple · 13/07/2007 21:01

Dd had three verrucas that were resistant to freezing and the bazuka stuff. The nurse recommended some gel called Cuplex, from the pharmacist, which works in a similar way to bazuka, in that you paint it on one day and peel it off the next. Within a week they had gone - excellent stuff, it a little pongy.

mabelmurple · 13/07/2007 21:02

if a littly pongy

mabelmurple · 13/07/2007 21:03

if a little pongy. Good grief .

This is good.

PigeonPie · 13/07/2007 21:04

No idea what's in banana skin, but it did work!

TheChamberofCarrots · 13/07/2007 21:04

Your breastmilk got rid of a wart? Wow!
