I take ferrous sulphate tablets one a day but they can cause my constipation

Can anyone recommend an alternative?

If they're prescribed see your GP. There are alternatives they can prescribe that don't have as bad side effects.

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 21:13

Yes! Spinach, eat it with everything and eat vit c high food to increase absorption to the max. You will notice the difference in days.
Also, some nicenjuicy rare steaks!

Only thing I could tolerate was Spatone sachets but I had to buy them.

QuestionableMouse · 30/03/2019 21:14

I use the liquid iron. Works really well and no side effects for me. Blanking on the name atm though sorry!

Smotheroffive · 30/03/2019 21:14

And zero constipation!

ssd · 30/03/2019 21:15

Not prescribed I take them when I'm feeling tired, I don't eat red meat leafy veg lentils etc so take them as a source of iron

Am just looking for something that doesn't bung me up

I didn't have a problem with this.

Floradix, I've used it for years. It's such a lovely tasting liquid too, you can taste the goodness.

ssd · 30/03/2019 21:17

X post😁

Mine is prescribed. Really bugging me because I've literally just taken some!

QuestionableMouse · 30/03/2019 21:19

Its Sytron

no I didnt have to Google it

ssd · 30/03/2019 21:21

My midwife said not to drink caffeine with food as it counters iron in the food. So avoid tea/coffee at meal times to get the most out of the iron you're already eating :)

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 30/03/2019 21:31

Ferrograd c - it contains vitamin c to stop the constipation that can come with taking iron.

ssd · 30/03/2019 21:32

Has anyone tried feroglobin, it's cheaper than floradix?

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 30/03/2019 21:33

I'm looking for the same. Floradix makes me heave, but even when I take it religiously it doesn't seem to work as well as taking the prescribed iron tablets.

greenelephantscarf · 30/03/2019 21:33

fluids and fibre will help you.

lucy101101 · 30/03/2019 21:34

Another vote for spatone. They do an apple version with some vit c in which makes it more effective/taste better.

DrWhy · 30/03/2019 21:34

Spatone works for me but it’s not as strong as the ferrous sulphate so you have to take a couple of sachets to be as effective.

reefedsail · 30/03/2019 21:36

Feroglobin is amazing. Literally changed my life.

I use the Plus stuff. They have it at Tesco.

ssd · 30/03/2019 21:43

So is liquid better than tablets then to help with getting rid of constipation?

OP posts:
JulianDickGeorgeAndTimmy · 30/03/2019 21:47

Spatone

enjoyingscience · 30/03/2019 21:52

Spatone worked for me when I was pg - you have it in orange juice. Tastes like drinking 2ps, but no constipation...
