I take ferrous sulphate tablets one a day but they can cause my constipation

Can anyone recommend an alternative?

My iron levels are borderline and spatone wasn't strong enough. I take ferrous gluconate tablets and that seems to be working without any problems (other tablets gave me constipation and nausea).

Yes Spatone ( two sachets) it quickly brought my iron levels back up, it tastes OK and no constipation! The only thing I had to buy it, not sure whether it could be prescribe by your GP if you explained the problems you are having with conventional tablets.

Iron bisgycinate is good. Doesn't make me nauseous or constipated.

Spatone in OJ.

Also blend up a ripe banana, bit of milk and frozen pucks of spinach from the supermarket and I swear you won't taste the spinach at all.

But also ferrous FUMERATE tablets as opposed to ferrous sulphate is not so constipating.

If you are diagnosed with anaemia and on prescription iron tablets please don’t switch to spatone or any other over the counter iron supplements without talking to your gp first. They are a fraction of the strength of the ferrous fumerate and ferrous sulphate tablets and if your anaemia is quite severe you can end up making yourself very unwell.

None of these suggestions contain as much iron as the ferrous sulphate you have been prescribed by your GP - depending on how anaemic you are switching to them could be damaging to your health.

There are prescribed options such as ferrous fumerate that some people find less constipating so please discuss this with your GP.

Or take something daily to manage the constipation such as Movicol to keep you going rather than changing the iron.

Sytron is prescribed and equivalent to the iron tablets.
