I've had a painful ankle for months. Had MRI with conflicting results, am awaiting a third opinion. There's something wrong with my tendon.

Been walking today and ankle is bruised in line with tendon. Exceedingly painful and weirdly painful also to gentle touch on the skin which it never has been before. Google suggests it could be a total tendon rupture and to seek urgent medical attention to prevent permanent damage.

I'm struggling to weight bear and can't really move my foot well. But I'm thinking an evening of icing and elevation may help? Hang in will add photo in the comments.

Never had bruising like this before, there's never been anything to see before at all. Pain is 20x worse than usual.

I would go to A&E, certainly sounds like something has changed and it may need an xray or scan.

Disclaimer: not a medic.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 20/03/2019 17:05

I'd phone your GP surgery first just in case they can squeeze you in before end of day

Knittedfairies · 20/03/2019 17:05

Perhaps you should call 111 and speak to someone.

WeeDangerousSpike · 20/03/2019 17:05

Goodness, that does look rather alarming. Is a+e your only choice or do you have a minor injuries near you? Or can you contact the dept that is seeing you about it? Or out of hours Dr?

Our a+e is everything rolled into one, but I appreciate others are very much emergency departments.

Pringlemunchers · 20/03/2019 17:05

I personally would not, it's not an accident or emergency. Try gp or a "walk in " centre. Hope it gets sorted soon.

SleepWarrior · 20/03/2019 17:06

Is there some reason that you wouldn't go to a&e if you can't weight bear and suspect a total tendon rupture? The bruise and worsening pain is new today as a result of walking right?

You could try 111 (who'll probably advise you to go) and that would give you the 'excuse' to be turning up there if you're worried about it being an unwarranted trip and looking like a time waster.

pearldeodorant · 20/03/2019 17:07

Don't go to a GP they will only send you to a&e! Hope you get it looked at soon, it looks sore.

WeeDangerousSpike · 20/03/2019 17:07

Also, not to worry you unduly, but tendon and ligament damage is quite time critical I think, so better to be seen sooner rather than later, whoever you choose to see.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/03/2019 17:09

I would go to A&E. It's really painful and swollen - that sounds like sufficient reason to go to me! Particularly with your concerns about the tendon added in.

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 17:09

I'm on holiday, on my own with a dog. Who I can't take into hospital with me and don't want to leave in the car.

SnapesGreasyHair · 20/03/2019 17:09

Nurse here. I would go hospital because if you can't weight bare then you probably need an xray.... which can only be done in hospital....

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 17:11

Well I can weight bare but is very painful and am limping badly. I'd rather not weight bare but can grit my teeth and do it.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 20/03/2019 17:12

pearldeodorant The GP will only send the OP to A&E if they think there is some immediate treatment or investigation necessary (eg. a scan)

If it's just a case of rest, ice, elevation & pain relief then they won't advise the OP to visit A&E

SleepWarrior · 20/03/2019 17:31

What about looking on FB for local dog sitters?

If you can weight bear but it's just painful then hopefully it's not a rupture. I would still go though, if you can find a way.

Lumene · 20/03/2019 17:34

Try ringing 111 or GP they will be better able to advise whether it may be a long term damage issue

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 17:34

Have decided I'm going to go home early. first thing tomorrow and then ring 111 when I get home.

Not a medic at all but - Can you move your toes up (opposite to pointing them)? If not may be worth going tonight?

Similarly - can you move the foot side to side?

If you can go tonight it may help open up more treatment plan options if tendon related.

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 19:28

I can move my toes up ok. Can just move my foot side to side but very painful.

I know I've got a longitudinal split in my tendon, well one mri report said I have anyway but consultant now says he doesn't believe the mri report. This is after initially he said he wanted to operate to fix it. But my private physio reckons I have tendon damage and I have a lengthy nhs mri report which says I do. Now I'm waiting for a CT scan which is next week.

I'd rather get home and get back to my local hospital tomorrow where they have my reports, etc. Not that the consultant seems in a hurry to do anything.

OP posts:
sd249 · 20/03/2019 19:33

I completely tore that tendon - I couldn't move my foot to the left at all (left ankle).

A and E might only do an x ray then say "its not broken" and send you home. A complete tendon rupture there although painful isn't often operated on as you can live without it once the initial pain goes down. I was only given surgery because I am an athlete and needed it for my sport and that still took almost a year. They said they usually just leave them and you don't actually need it!

The consultant is the expert, and if he isn't in a rush then it's likely there is a reason for that. Best that they can do is request another MRI but GP might be better for that than A and E.

Wauden · 20/03/2019 19:34

Flowers I hope you get proper help soon.

MaudeLynne · 20/03/2019 19:39

Hope your car is an automatic? Don't drive if it isn't.

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 19:42

sd249. It's just the pain I'm in all the time. I can't walk more than ten mins without being in agony. I can't walk down stairs unless I side step down. It's so debilitating.

I've asked to be referred to another hospital as current one first radiologist said I had a tear, then a second one looked at the same mri and said it wasn't torn. Consultant says he's going with the second one and won't let me have a third opinion for a best of three. My worry is the first one right and the second one is wrong.

If they can't sort my pain out I'm going to ask them to amputate my foot/lower leg because I genuinely believe my quality of life would improve.

I'm hoping a different hospital will do another mri and I finally get some answers.

NicoAndTheNiners · 20/03/2019 19:42

And it's been very painful for nearly a year now.
