Endo GP reluctant to prescribe NSAIDs but desperate for pain relief

ssunniebear · 05/03/2019 19:51

I had endo on the bowel diagnosed and treated by a specialist gynae.

Since the surgery i have had several hospitalisations with queried appendicitis which have settled with regular painkillers bed rest and antisickness tablets. I have seen the consultant who has suggested declofinac suppositories to get into the bloodstream quickly and further surgery if things dont settle.

Unfortunately i feel i am there is a delay in getting the medication as the GP is relluctant to prescribe as feels the risk of kidney damage fromdeclofinac outweighs the benefit. At tjhe same time a period is about to start. I have taken paracetamol to keep ontop of pain relief, but am worried things may become unmanageable. Are the OOO likely to be able to help with painkillers without admitting me?

I have been woken with pain. Any ideas how i can get painkillers over the next 24 hours. Paracetamol ibuprofen and codeine phosphate 15 mg have not redduced the pain enough to sleep.

Could you call 111 now? And GP in the morning?
Maybe consultant’s secretary in the morning and they could prescribe/put pressure on GP to prescribe?

Poppins2016 · 06/03/2019 04:35

Another vote for 111. They might be able to get you an OOO appointment.

In the meantime, would a hot water bottle take the sharpness off the pain just a little? I have endometriosis... I know it won't make the pain go away, but it could help distract from the pain... (Context: In the past I've taken strong painkillers and ended up blinkered regarding the other things that can help due to the 'pain fog'.

ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 04:37

Thanks. My concern with calling 111 is that i havealways been admitted to hospital when seen by ooh, as they queery an appendicitis. Has anyone managed to get OoH to prescribe without an examination. I dont want to waste resources when its likely just endo.
I plan to contact my.consultants secretrary in the morning andask for a private script. In some ways i can understand the GP prefering that the consultant takes the prescribing risk, however that doesnt help me now.

Thanks poppins i am currently curled up with a hot waterbottle which is relaxing me enough that i am not sick with pain. Agree about getting in a pain fog and not knowing how best to help onesself. How is your endo treated?

OP posts:
NeedAMakeover · 06/03/2019 04:42

Fuck wasting resources OP, you’re in pain! It might ‘just’ be endo, but it doesn’t make you less important because you have a diagnosis.
The way women with endo (and other conditions) are fobbed off is shameful! /rant

ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 05:04

Thanks i just think being admitted is probably unneccesary and involves waiting arround in hospital rather than being curlefd up in my bed with a hotwater bottle,.

In my area i can call an ooh gp dirrectly. Would you call this or 111? Sorry cant think straight.

OP posts:
NeedAMakeover · 06/03/2019 05:11

I’d probably go ooo gp and explain the situation. Might get more sense out of them than 111 call handler.
I hope you get some relief soon OP Flowers

ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 05:20

Thanks have called ooh and am waiting for a call back. Really appreciate the support. Uits so isolating to be in pain like this.

OP posts:
NeedAMakeover · 06/03/2019 05:28

This might be unhelpful, but I always think stuff’s harder at night.
Sun’ll be coming up soon, and while it won’t help the pain, at least it’s daytime and other people are up and about.

ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 05:51

Totally agree everything fels so much harder at night. In the day it is much easier to get help from people and there are lots more distractions. Thanks for helping me through the night.

The out of hours still hasn’t called so I will; try my gp at 8:30. Anyone know if the private consultant will be able to get the prescription to a pharmacy?

OP posts:
ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 08:45

Have finally got throught to my GP and no appointments left for today. I am hoping the pain eases as the day goes on because otherwise I will need to go to the walkin.

Ask for a callback from the GP.

Also contact the consultant's secretary and ask them to speak to the GP, and/ or to recommend something else.

MrMeSeeks · 06/03/2019 08:52

Can yougo to the pharmacy and get otc painkillers?

Dodie66 · 06/03/2019 09:01

I have 15mg codeine phosphate for migraines. I just looked at the leaflet in the packet and it says 30 - 60 mg can be taken 4 times a day every 6 hours. Maybe try 2? Or ask your doc for extra strength cocodamol which had 30mg of codeine phosphate in each tablet

ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 10:45

Thanks all
I have left a message for my consultants secretrary. I was only looking for a call back from a GP as this is the system my GP uses.

I am now in a bit less pain for the momennt, but it may well come back. Having tried paracetamol Codeine and ibuprofen I don’t think there is anything else I can get OTC.

Thanks for the info re codeine, my leaflet says similar so may try increasing the dose if struggling later.

Its difficult as in hospital I generally get given paracetamol codeine and then morphine for break through pain but do not have anything of the same strength to use at home.

Bringbackthestripes · 06/03/2019 10:50

Naproxen is available OTC and might help see you through until the consultant can sort something- although there is a shortage of it at the moment so I would phone around and see if any local pharmacy has stocks of it before going.

ssunniebear · 06/03/2019 21:09

I think i will keep off antiinflamitories for now. Just woke up from a sleep and have done huge ammounts of watery D with blood and mucus. Think i am in for another fun night. Thanks

OP posts:
Dodie66 · 06/03/2019 21:25

You should be fine to take 2 x 15mg I have cocodamol 30/500 and can take 2 4 times a day so that’s 60mg at a time
I would go back to your GP and ask if he would prescribe the stronger cocodamol

MintChocChips · 06/03/2019 22:27

I have endo, I take mefanemic acid, cocodomol and tramadol together when it's bad. It usually gets it under control enough that I can somewhat function. I've had to go in for morphine on a few occasions.

Sending hugs, it's horrible to deal with. I find the consultant a lot better than GP's in getting the meds right.

Are you on contraception to stop your periods? That helps me a little.

ssunniebear · 07/03/2019 01:40

While in less pain i have again been woken by the most horendas watery diarrhoea. I am now scared to either drink or sleep as barely got to the toilet in time.

I have a mirina saddly i have had breakthrough bleeding like a period for the last two months.

OP posts:
ssunniebear · 07/03/2019 07:55

I am now feeloing wek and shakey from the diarrhoea. Looking forward to the weekend when this hopefully stops.

OP posts:
ssunniebear · 07/03/2019 07:55

Weak

MintChocChips · 07/03/2019 08:46

It sounds awful, have you managed to speak to your consultant?
