Pain/tender back of calf after a hospital admission. What to do?

I was in hospital last week for an asthma flare, basically bed ridden the whole time and the majority of the time since. I was there 3 nights and had 2 heparin anti coagulation injections whilst there as per protocol. Last night and this morning I’ve noticed a pain in the back of my calf, getting heavier and more tender, almost like a cramp. Just one leg. It’s not sore to just touch, only to squeeze. I’m trying to leave it alone so as not to aggravate it further and let it settle. Is it possible I could have a DVT? If so what am I supposed to do about it? Thank you for your help!

Hope you're ok, please don't leave it till the morning.

Kukumbr · 25/02/2019 19:44

It’s about a 3 when I’m sat still and a 6 when I prod it. Can’t help but feel awful bloody melodramatic after all the fuss last week Sad

I am due to see asthma nurses weds morning and planned to mention it then however it’s really hurting now after a poke - it’s not swollen or red though

Stop poking it, rest and call for medical advice, Flowers

MadisonMontgomery · 25/02/2019 19:48

Well I think you would be an idiot to ignore everyone’s advice & leave it, but it’s your funeral not ours.

Kukumbr · 25/02/2019 19:49

OK, thanks for the grim message. I suppose I could call up 111 for advice. Shall do that now actually. Thanks

Did you call? At your age immobility from hospital and contraceptive use are risk factors. You need to be seen. My friend (38)died few weeks ago, most likely from clot in her lung (still waiting on outcome) so it is not worth the risk!

Kukumbr · 25/02/2019 20:20

Sorry to hear about your friend Flowers. I don’t take any contraception. I have been trying to see the backs of my two calves to see if there’s a difference. About to put ds to bed then will call

I despair.

Kukumbr · 25/02/2019 20:25

@donajimena do you? Tell me more.

I don’t see anything different. My mum has had DVTs and PEs and has reported that there’d be a bruise or a red or swollen part of the leg. Can’t see anything

Sometimes there isn’t anything except pain. Then the clot breaks off, shoots round your circulatory system and wherever it lands that’s what you get! Stroke or respiratory arrest.

dottyp0104 · 25/02/2019 20:30

There wouldn't always be a bruise. You must have been pretty concerned to post so you are being a tad silly not taking the advice. I say that as a nurse. Ps, family history is also a risk factor so honestly can't see why you would be putting it off. A blood test and a scan would put your mind at rest

JuniperGins · 25/02/2019 20:30

My dads I don’t think looked different, it just hurt. He also had no risk factors, in his 50’s, very fit and not in long. Just unlucky

Kukumbr · 25/02/2019 20:31

I am just so tired tonight trying to recover from my bad chest. I can’t face the idea of sitting in A&E all night

Almost a year to the day I was lying in resus being asked which of my loved ones they could contact and whether I wanted extreme measures taken to save my life if necessary after developing a post surgery DVT, which travelled to my lungs causing a huge bilateral pulmonary embolism that caused my heart to swell and very nearly killed me.

Am I trying to scare you? Damn right I am. GET IT CHECKED OUT.

Petalflowers · 25/02/2019 20:33

Call 111, or is there an our of hours doctors locally? If it’s a suspected dvd, they may rushnyou Through.

wigglypiggly · 25/02/2019 20:34

Hopefully it's nothing but you've been given good advice on here, we think you should call for medical advice.

Decormad38 · 25/02/2019 20:42

Listen op. Are you just attention seeking? You are describing a medical emergency and then when getting advice from many posters like myself who are nurses you are deciding to completely ignore it. If you go to sleep. It may be your last sleep. How blunt should we be?

endofthelinefinally · 25/02/2019 20:46

OMG you have family history.
Did you tell them that when you went into hospital? I really hope so because you would have been given a bigger dose of the injection.
You also have asthma which is another risk factor.
Do not delay. Please.

AutumnCrow · 25/02/2019 20:48

My mum has had DVTs and PEs and has reported that there’d be a bruise or a red or swollen part of the leg. Can’t see anything

That is dangerous advice. I had a mile leg ache

JuniperBeer · 25/02/2019 20:48

You’ve been told what to do. You’ve been given sound advice.

Either ring 111 and get your own advice and go and see a medical professional or just stop attention seeking.

AutumnCrow · 25/02/2019 20:50

Sorry

...I had a mild leg ache for a while, then breathlessness. Nearly died of a blood clot in my lung.

I would be calling an ambulance if it happened again.

donajimena · 25/02/2019 20:55

I despair because you either won't listen or nothing is really the matter.

Kukumbr · 25/02/2019 21:19

I’ve got all I need from this thread now. Thanks for the accusations of attention seeking.
