Is it normal to sweat this much at night?

When I'm woken up in the middle of deep sleep (due to baby crying) I'm absolutely drenched in sweat. Last night my clothes were soaked through and there was an puddle in the shape of my top half on my bedsheets. I only wear a thin sleep bra, thin vest and thin trousers to bed - I always used to be cold at night. I've not long moved from a draughty Victorian house to one that's much more insulated/less draughty so there's a bit of that.

I don't know if I always sweat this much at night and it just ... dries up? Soaks in? I dunno - by the time I wake up if I get to sleep a few hours. It's disgusting though. I definitely don't seem to have it if I sleep longer.

I'm not particularly overweight, size 10 with the tummy of a mum-of-two; i am unfit though. Normal feather duvet, not a memory foam mattress or anything. Just wondering why now (I'm 37 too so unlikely to be menopause?!)

What are you blankets, sheets and mattress made of?

sweatybettee · 15/02/2019 21:52

cotton or polycotton sheet
feather duvet
mattress, not sure but it is natural

None of those have changed in the last couple of years though and this seems to be a recent thing (or I'm noticing it more because I'm waking so many times in the night)

How old is the baby/are you still breastfeeding?

I had horrific night sweats with just one of my DC until 6 months after I stopped feeding her...

sweatybettee · 15/02/2019 21:55

Hmm! Interesting. He's 1yo and I feed him 3 x a day and supposedly once at night but this has become multiple times recently as he wants comfort and is waking lots due to teething/illness/jabs/wonder weeks etc

It could be a number of things. I would make an appointment with your GP to discuss.

RandomMess · 15/02/2019 21:57

Very likely hormonal then, it's like a preview of the menopause!

FlipperSocks · 15/02/2019 21:57

I had this! Was so sweaty. Dr did some tests to rule out other things but put it down to breastfeeding hormones - happens to some people. Stopped when I stopped breastfeeding thankfully. In the meantime I would swap my pillow over in the middle of the night for some relief.

sweatybettee · 15/02/2019 21:57

I remember with my first baby I sweated loads (and it smelled different - sorry tmi) in the early weeks but don't think it went on this long? I didn't feed him beyond 10 months or so.

Night sweats can sometimes be a symptom of thyroid problems which can be triggered by pregnancy. If it’s worrying you it might be worth asking your GP about some blood tests just in case.

MrsJayy · 15/02/2019 21:58

It sounds like it might be ahormonal imbalance what age are you ? I would definately go to the Drs that sounds hellish

Misty9 · 15/02/2019 22:00

Hormones. Pesky things. I get night sweats every now and again and I agree, it feels gross. I'm just 38 but perimenopause can go on for 10 years apparently. The joys.

Cotton only sheets and leaving the window open at night help a bit.

Snowflakes1122 · 15/02/2019 22:01

I went through this after my second baby. I stopped breastfeeding at 13 months, and had these awful night sweats. I’d wake up drenched. It didn’t matter what I wore, or the room temperature.

I was 24 when it happened, and not menopausal. Doubt it’s that for you at 37.

They did eventually go away after a few months. My hormones go nuts after pregnancy. Thankfully it didn’t happen with my other 3 kids.

Hope it stops for you soon Flowers

Could be peri menopause. Are your periods the same time apart as they used to be?

lljkk · 15/02/2019 22:03

I had a hormonal phase after one of my babies, maybe 3-7 months post partum, often very sweaty at night & waking up. It went away.

sweatybettee · 15/02/2019 22:05

Thank you all. I'll bear in mind the thyroid thing and will probably ask for a blood test if it continues.
Annoyingly it's going to be hard to open my window as we are on a busy road which has traffic all through the night and rush hour starts about 5am :(

No idea how long I'll bf for!

Another one suggesting that you get this checked by your GP Smile

sweatybettee · 15/02/2019 22:05

I'm on the minipill so don't really get periods. With DC1 I did start getting light periods back actually about 1 year postpartum but haven't yet - apparently this is normal.

My DD is 2.4 and if it’s baby related I’m still getting it. Mine is loads worse in the week before my period. Would be surprised if I’m peri-menopausal but that’s next on the list to check.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/02/2019 22:25

Night sweats can be a sign of certain types of leukaemia. The people saying get a GP to check it out are speaking sense. It’s wise to rule sinister reasons out if you’re nowhere near menopause age.

Shock shit

I was convinced I had lymphoma when I started getting nights sweats. Doctor said it’s low iron cause/related. I’m on tablets for 3 months so don’t know if it’ll help yet

RandomMess · 15/02/2019 22:49

Yes get it checked out, but really it isn't uncommon that post baby hormonal changes cause this.

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 16/02/2019 08:10

Night sweats can be a symptom of blood cancer, especially if they're drenching. See your GP for a blood test just to be on the safe side.
Have a look at general symptoms of blood cancers too in case you have any other symptoms worth mentioning to the doc.
Obviously it's highly unlikely to be cancer, so don't worry too much, it's probably the hormones! I got night sweats when breastfeeding too.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2019 08:19

Night sweats can be a sign of certain types of leukaemia. The people saying get a GP to check it out are speaking sense. This is exactly why I suggested it. The last person I met who was suffering night sweats died of undiagnosed non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

lljkk · 17/02/2019 08:44

Other symptoms of blood cancer:
Fatigue
Unexplained weight loss
Enlarged lymph nodes
Feeling of fullness in the abdomen
Aches in the arms, legs, or joints

Other symptoms of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Enlarged lymph nodes
Chills
Weight loss
Fatigue (feeling very tired)
Swollen abdomen (belly)
Feeling full after only a small amount of food
Chest pain or pressure
Shortness of breath or cough
Severe or frequent infections
Easy bruising or bleeding
