Can you have sinus pain without cold symptoms/blocked up nose?

Aberforthsgoat · 14/02/2019 17:46

No cold as such, but been a bit sniffly, sometimes a bit blocked up in the morning, and been sneezing a bit.
Got pressurey pain in the bridge of my nose and sometimes around eyes and jaw feels quite achey, sometimes teeth too.
I think I’ve had that weird virus that’s going around but seeing as I haven’t had full on snot symptoms wondered if it could still be sinus pressure?

I’m not sure, but had you considered it could be migraine? I’ve been having some headaches and facial pain recently so have done some (too much) Googling and some people seem to complain of sinus type and tooth pain. Hope it’s better soon.

Aberforthsgoat · 14/02/2019 19:54

Thank you I do get migraine but not like this - and I have been in a bad patch with anxiety but just with the ear thing and sneezing I wondered

Blocked sinuses. It's like a headache in your face. There's a nasal spray that helps, I think it's called Otrivine or something.

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/02/2019 19:57

I went to see my doctor today as I've had this for a week now (along with a cough) it's a virus apparently. The doctor recommended the ELVIS treatment of using salt water nasal irrigation - you can look it up online for videos of how to do it. It seems to be helping

Booboostwo · 14/02/2019 20:04

My sinusitis is always like that. I used to have 3-6 attacks every winter, they were extremely painful and unmanageable. CT scan showed all clear (polyps may sometimes cause sinus problems) and in the end it was an allergic reaction. I take nasal steroids December to March now and I am fine.

dontticklethetoad · 14/02/2019 20:07

Yes! It's been awful. Especially when I bend down. Although most colds end up in my sinuses, this has been particularly horrible.

PlatypusPie · 14/02/2019 20:14

Yes - I used to get frequent sinus problems without having had a cold or having blocked or stuffy isle. Going non dairy to address late onset eczema made a big difference to the sinus problems, as a bonus , and I also find beconase spray really helpful,

Aberforthsgoat · 14/02/2019 20:15

That’s interesting I’ve had more dairy than usual as well. it’s not too bad yet thankfully it’s
More the starting of the pressure if that makes sense I feel like I want to keep squeezing the bridge of my nose and my teeth are low level full achey

WrongKindOfFace · 14/02/2019 20:16

Yes, you can. I’ve found that sterimar saline spray helps. Although the saline spray you get for little kids also helps, plus it’s cheaper.

Don’t use the otc nasal congestion sprays for more than a week as they can make things worse.

Aberforthsgoat · 14/02/2019 20:17

Yes I got kind of hooked last time I used nasal spray Blush
I just feel like I want to keep swueezing the bridge of my nose and massaging my temples/jaw around my eyes

The one I use is called Mometasone now France, Nasonex I think in the U.K. but you need a prescription for it. Works wonders!

Aberforthsgoat · 14/02/2019 20:45

Is that a decongestant one?

OP posts:
Booboostwo · 14/02/2019 20:55

No corticosteroid.

Aberforthsgoat · 14/02/2019 20:59

Ah ok I will look into it

Thanks for replies I didn’t realise you actually CAN have sinus pain without feeling snotty/ blocked up
I’ve only really had sniffles and sneezes but have constant dull pressure at the top of my nose

OP posts:
Aberforthsgoat · 15/02/2019 09:00

Can’t seem to find it so perhaps you’re right and prescription only

Think it’s getting a bit worse, the pressure seems to have increased around my jaw and teeth and feel a bit shaky this morning :(

When Ds was 9/10 would have headaches for months because of sinus pain, but took an MRI diagnosis because most of the time he wasnt snotty.

Dottierichardson · 15/02/2019 09:15

Yes you can but I've also had this linked to an undiagnosed dental infection, as well as another that developed after a treated dental infection which needed a dose of very strong antibiotics; basically the tooth infection was demolished by an antibiotic for those but elements had infected the sinuses and took a while to develop. If neither of these a problem/possibility I find using inhalations with things like Vicks good for relieving the pressure when it's really bad, the rest of the time I use a spray with salt water daily and clean the inside of my nostrils to stop problems developing, as I also have a problem with my sinuses in general. Mine developed after a virus it affected the right side of my face and affected future sinus drainage.

Daftapath · 15/02/2019 09:31

I had this a couple of weeks ago. Not really a cold and not much of a streaming nose but very swollen sinuses and a blocked, cracking ear. Try an antihistamine. They usually work wonders. Obviously a non drowsy one during the day. I nicked ds' Clarityn.

Hope you feel better soon.

helzapoppin2 · 15/02/2019 10:11

I’ve got this. I’ve never had it before, without a full on cold. Dry swollen sinuses and a bit of a tight chest. It’s lasted a few weeks now, so I went to the doctors who said “No antibiotics”, and to try Beconase to bring down the sinus swelling, and it’s probably a virus. The Beconase soothed my sinuses more or less instantly. The only other thing I feel is a total lack of energy. That’s not unusual for February where I’m often at a low ebb, so I will start on the vitamins.
It is, as the OP says a “weird virus” and very frustrating because with the exception of teary eyes, I look fine, not even a runny nose.

Aberforthsgoat · 15/02/2019 10:19

It’s horrible isn’t it
I just feel out of sorts and bit wrong, like you say to look at me I look fine my sinuses don’t even look swollen it’s just this pressure I can feel on and off
I will try what you suggest I’m hoping to nip it in the bud before it gets worse

Aberforthsgoat, I tried squirting saline up my nose at first but it just acted as an irritant. It was the Beconase, OTC from Boots that helped the poor old sinuses.

Tensixtysix · 15/02/2019 10:54

I had an infected tooth back in September, turned out that it had a very fine crack in it and the root had died.
Had horrendous tooth pain and a nasty smell in my nose. Turned out that it was an infected sinus but didn't have the 'pressure' feeling.
Back in December I had the tooth out and slowly, very slowly the sinuses seem to be clearing.
But it's only when I bend over that the 'smell' returns. So not sure what the GP can do.

Aberforthsgoat · 15/02/2019 18:11

Ouch!

It seems to be so much worse when I start feeling tired as well, as with most colds!

Sinutab (over the counter at pharmacy) is the best thing for sinus pain and congestion. It also helps to dry up the fabulous post nasal drip that sometimes accompanies dodgy sinuses. Sadly I'm a sinus expert 😐

CherryBlossom23 · 15/02/2019 21:13

Oh also, search sinus drainiage message on YouTube. I find it helps a lot when my teeth are aching from sinusitis.
