Think I have perianal abscess

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 07:04

I'm so embarrassed.
Usually a sporner but this is way out of my comfort zone

Acute painful swelling downstairs and I googled it and now I'm feeling very alarmed.

You know those silly people who are ridiculously embarrassed about bodily functions at the best of times? Who won't poo away from home or go to the gp with anything, that's me.

I need to make an appointment and I think it'll need a minor op and my brain is already racing ahead to potential continence issues in the future etc

Make the appointment for today. Antibiotics taken now could ensure you avoid surgery. The dr will have seen your condition before. Good luck.

sandgrown · 22/01/2019 07:15

No experience of this but it sounds really painful. You will have to bite the bullet and make an appointment! I was so reluctant to go GP when I had constant bouts of cystitis. It turned out to be post menopausal vaginal dryness. The relief was immense! Make that appointment asap OP. Good luck

ZigZagZombie · 22/01/2019 07:18

I've had dozens - touch wood not for about 15 years now.

I've had a few ops and they were horrendous - the recovery I mean. Once I'd had those the skin became so weak that I handled the situation with a stiff drink and sharp knife. Which probably isn't officially sanctioned by the NHS! Grin I do wonder if the surgery has changed though because when I had mine done it was at least 48 hours on the ward, but a friend had hers done a few years back and she was in and out within a few hours.

TickleMeEmo · 22/01/2019 07:19

Please call your GP, I ended up very ill with sepsis after I didn’t realise I had one and the infection spread. I just thought it was a nasty spot in an awkward place. The quicker you get it drained, the quicker it will be to heal. Also don’t think it’s possible to have continance issues from one of that eases your mind.

ZigZagZombie · 22/01/2019 07:20

Duh... ignore the above - I got mixed up - it's pilonidal I was prone to.

jessstan2 · 22/01/2019 07:20

Please see GP as soon as possible, you'll be fine if it's nipped in the bud but if left could get much worse and even become a fistula. Things like that are very painful and no-one wants that.

Soon be over Flowers.

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 07:34

I know I have to go. I'm usually very well and I hate anything like this, really hate it.
Everything I've read suggests antibiotics alone are unlikely to be the answer without draining it.
I know lots of people at my local hospital Blush and I'll be so embarrassed. I know everyone has got the same bits but I can't explain how horrendous the idea is.

And yy I will make the appointment, I know I have to.

A small lump came up a few weeks ago and I was starting to think uh-oh but then it disappeared and I thought I was fine. Now it's back and bigger and more acute. I just want to cry and hide.

I'm medical, I'm fairly sure of my self diagnosis. Also why I hate having to admit I'm a mere mortal with this stuff

Miracle of miracles I've got an afternoon appointment for today

Wish me luck

You’re doing the right thing, OP. I was left in a hell of a mess when I was a student - the GP I went to missed it, and it burst a few week later when I fell down the stairs.

Never known pain like it. It came back a few times, and I think I have a small fistula as a result.

Good luck.

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 09:22

I am dreading going, I'll be honest.
I've got IBS anyway so I'll probably have to take time off while I'm on antibiotics anyway as I'll be rotten. (best case scenario)
Or pretend it's a gynae issue if I have to be admitted so I don't have to tell anyone what the problem is Blush

MollyHuaCha · 22/01/2019 10:18

Well done for making your appointment. You'll be so pleased once you have a treatment plan in place for this distressing issue. Smile

EngagedAgain · 22/01/2019 10:23

I know it's an old cliche but they've seen it all before. It'll all be over in a flash. And no you don't (have to) tell anyone at work! Hope all goes well.

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 14:55

Correctly self diagnosed Sad
Am being referred to get it sorted

Still mortified. Aw well it's in the process now

MollyHuaCha · 22/01/2019 15:52

Well done for your diagnosis OP. Can it be cured with antibiotics?

jessstan2 · 22/01/2019 16:13

That's the first hurdle over, op.
You'll soon be well.

There you go There you go OP, you can get your abscess treated quickly and efficiently.

The only slight drawback will be the presence of camera crew, sound and lighting team, producer, presenter, make up artist, prompter... and in a few months time you could be a famous face on our TV screens.

And we can say we met you on MN first.

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 19:22

What did I miss, it was already deleted.
No, antibiotics won't sort it, I'm having a small op this week and hoping for smooth recovery. I won't have had this much time off in ages so I hope I feel well enough to enjoy it Grin

just clutch your hands under your boobs and mouth "downstairs trubbles" at anyone who asks...just like Cissy or Ada.

no one will dare to ask more.

hope it all goes well for you!

Strugglingonagain · 22/01/2019 19:31

Hope all goes ok OP, thinking of you x

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 19:34

MsMightyTitan I love that idea Grin

I might say I'm having my leg sewn back in after a nasty crochet accident

Or buttock implants so I can be an Instagram star

JustGiveMeTwoMinutes · 22/01/2019 19:38

You can get rid of them with anti biotics, I have, but only in the very very early stages, less than 24 hours. So unlikely with the first one as you kind of have to have had one before to recognise the particular feeling

MollyHuaCha · 22/01/2019 20:17

You missed an opportunity to enroll on a TV programme and have your condition assessed and treated whilst entertaining those happy viewers at home with nothing better to do than to watch someone else's perianal abscess be drained.

If you say you're happy to give it a go, I'm sure the nice programme researcher will be happy to share their email address again.

Mortified555 · 22/01/2019 21:11

Oh I see

Well wallisrichie, I think you should fuck right off.

All the best, knobhead
