11 month old with high temp, when should I worry?

DD has temperature of 39.4, using uner-arm therm. I was told to add 1 degree to this as it is outer body temp. Is this true? If so it makes her temp 40.4

I have just got her home from nursery, where they called me as soon as they noticed. Apparantly it went up quickly (within 10 mins - it had been a bit high but not too high to be concerned).

I have given her medised, taken her outer clothes, just has nappy and body suit on, sponged her down with wet cloth.

She has been in a good mood, eaten breakfast, half lunch, all milk, and water, but had no nap.

In last 5 mins she has fallen asleep in my arms, but I just knocked a cup and she startled, so think its tiredness/medised.

So, is her temp anything to be concerned about? Should I call GP or wait for medused to work? She has only ever had a temp like this once, when mid-atlantic and i panicked then too!

What kind of thermometer???

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 16:56

digital under arm one

not over anxious IMHO
DS spikes high temps when he is ill
you have done all the right things
the medised has probably knocked her out
see how she goes in the next hour or so - if temp won't come down even with meds quick call to NHS direct or GP would be good

whomovedmychocolate · 27/06/2007 16:56

If it's digital and most likely accurate, give her liquid paracetamol (don't know what medised is sorry). If she's eating she's most likely fine though.

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 16:57

at nursery they took it as 102, DP lloked up coversion as 39? I dont know if its gone up or my therm is not accurate

Under arm temperatures tend to come out on the low side - if she seems at all unwell when she wakes up, ring the GP to check it out.

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 16:58

medised is paracetamol and decongestant - she's a bit stuffy nosed.

Ooh now that sounds like a great drug! Thanks for the tip. Hopefully your DD will be entirely back to normal and running you ragged by bedtime!

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 17:01

oh, i should not strip her completely naked right? worried she might get a chill, but also that she might be too hot..

poor lil one .

Rubyslippers · 27/06/2007 17:02

hope she is ok
a sleep will probably perk her up as well
hope you both have a restful night

Rubyslippers · 27/06/2007 17:02

if DS gets very hot i strip him to his nappy although a thin cotton vest can help soak up any swear ... is she sweaty?

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 17:03

wmmc - you helped me, i helped you . Sharing of info!

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 17:04

a little sweaty yes Ruby.

OP posts:
Rubyslippers · 27/06/2007 17:07

i would strip her to her nappy then and she how she is after her nap

naughtymummy · 27/06/2007 17:09

How much medised did you give her ?
How much does she weigh ?
Any other symptoms is she vomiting ? rash?
I would let medicine work and when she wakes see how she is. Does she still feel hot? Maternal report is supposed to be as good as a thermometer (recent NICE GUILDLINES)

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 17:10

thanks ruby [smile[. I feel calmer! for now!

NM - no rash/spots, only symptons are snotty nose and temp. Her behaviour has been great, up to just before i gav her medised, when she was a little whiney, but not much, her normal tired sounds.

She had 4ml medised, meant to be 5ml but refused last 1ml! She was very good taking it tho.... She weighs approx 17lb.

When ds had a very high temperature of 104°F, I took him to A&E who told me to give him ibuprofen as well as paracetamol to help bring the temperature down. HTH.

naughtymummy · 27/06/2007 17:16

Think its unlikely to be anything too scary if she is\otherwise ok. esp if eating and drinking well. I would just keep an eye on her. Tricky when their not well hope the mite feels better soon

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/06/2007 17:17

You can give infant nurofen as well as medised if temp doesn't come down. NHS direct always recommend it.

Be aware that febrile convulsions can start at 39.3, so try not to panic if they do (my dd had temp over 40 for a couple of days, but no convulsions, so they don't always happen).

PavlovtheCat · 27/06/2007 18:19

CSWS - I have been worried about the convulsions. So far, ok. I have just been reading up on what to do if she has one, just in case.
She is asleep. would go down in cot, would not settle, so we both have had a doze, and she is now asleep on sofa. She has woken a couple of times to make sure I am there, and back so sleep with a face stroke.
She is still quite hot, but I have not taken temp as she will wake if I do. I dont think she is as hot as she was. She has just nappy on, but no windows open to get her chilled.
She seems very tired, but I think ok apart from that.

Thanks for calming me everyone!

I will get DP to get some nurofen too as he is out at shops.

She woke up at 7pm, hungry, had a bottle, back to sleep!
So, she is eating fine, and her temperature seems a lot lower.
She now seems to be sleeping her normal sleep. Although I am anticipating her waking at some point .

Cheers all!
