11 month old with high temp, when should I worry?

DD has temperature of 39.4, using uner-arm therm. I was told to add 1 degree to this as it is outer body temp. Is this true? If so it makes her temp 40.4

I have just got her home from nursery, where they called me as soon as they noticed. Apparantly it went up quickly (within 10 mins - it had been a bit high but not too high to be concerned).

I have given her medised, taken her outer clothes, just has nappy and body suit on, sponged her down with wet cloth.

She has been in a good mood, eaten breakfast, half lunch, all milk, and water, but had no nap.

In last 5 mins she has fallen asleep in my arms, but I just knocked a cup and she startled, so think its tiredness/medised.

So, is her temp anything to be concerned about? Should I call GP or wait for medused to work? She has only ever had a temp like this once, when mid-atlantic and i panicked then too!

Ah that's good to hear Pavlov. Hope you get a (relatively) undisturbed night.

Rubyslippers · 28/06/2007 07:51

hope your DD is better this morning

Sounds like she's on the mend, PC. It is so quite worrying when they're that wee, isn't it?

PavlovtheCat · 28/06/2007 11:27

She slept all night. We checked on her several times during the evening, until DP went to bed at 12:30. Her temp reduced, I put her in a sleeping bag with no clothes on, to keep chill off her but so she did not bake, and covered her in a light sheet.

She slept soundly until 7am, when she woke in a very good mood, no temperature at all. She drank alll her milk, ate most of her breakfast and fell asleep in her highchair at 9:30am. Usually goes to sleep at 10:30-11, so guess still tired!

Now happily playing with toys after a nice bath to freshen her up.

All is well, I dont know what it was, but it came and went very quickly!

oh dear. Very weird. Her temperature is up again. Just picked her up, and she felt hot, so checked temp and it is 37.7, which is 38.7 as underarm ones are a little lower. Its not really high, but higher than normal and it feels like she is getting hotter by the second .

Have given her Calpol as dont want her to have medised during the day. She does not like that so much so only took 3ml, that should be enough to bring the temp down?

Any ideas what might be causing it? Should I make a Dr appt, just to make sure all is ok, or wait until tomorrow?

Again, her behaviour is fine. She is playing and smiling as normal, currently crying as her walkalong train is stuck, nothing unusual.

I shall keep an eye on her. Lunch now so will see if she will eat.

do a search on here for ROSEOLA. dd had it last week, loads of info in here on archives. basically it's a 3 day fever. just one of many things it could be.

Hey Pav - my DS has had temperatures this high before but didn't appear to have anything else wrong.

As long as you keep monitoring your DD and keep an eye on her, you are doing the right thing.

Hope she is better for Sunday - are you having a party?

skyatnight · 28/06/2007 12:57

Hi PtheC, I can't remember the details of the study but children's Ibuprofen has been proven to bring down temperature more effectively than Paracetamol. You can give Calpol or Medised (Paracetamol) as well as the Ibuprofen. My HV suggested giving dd alternating Ibuprofen then Paracetamol on a three hourly basis when her temperature was really high - e.g. Ibuprofen at 1pm, Calpol at 4pm, Ibuprofen at 7pm, etc., for as long as necessary, checking the temperature. I used to get really panicked about this as dd had a febrile convulsion once but this seems to work.

If you start to panic, ring the doctor to get her seen today (receptionist will slot your in if you explain it is a baby with a fever) or ring NHS direct and they will ask a doctor to call you - for peace of mind. But everytime I did this, it turned out to be nothing serious. It's good that she is playing and seems ok.

Ceebie - I shall come onto the July thread soon, I have been v busy with birthday and wedding plans!

Yes, we are having a party, shall tell you all about it tonight!

Her temperature is down, I shall look up Roseala, and give her ibuprofen too. Will probably alternate.

Have to go, she is currently playing peekaboo with the cat by covering him with the sofa throw! Got to resuce him. She seems fine.

Thanks all, I am such a panicker, she just never gets ill usually, so I am not used to these temperatures!
