i would appreciate any advice on which is better, normal pill or mini pill? i have never been on either before. have been seeing new bloke a few months now and we have been using withdrawal but after we had sex today i was pretty sure there was come there so have taken the morning after pill.he doesn't want more kids so there was no way i was going to take any chances as i am on day 9 of a 25 day cycle.not wanting me to fall pregnant has been affecting his wanting sex so i need to get things back on track!!

normal pill is more effective. mini pill has to be taken at the exact same time...
withdrwl method! tsk, tsk!!

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 16:35

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 16:36

nickytwotimes · 27/06/2007 16:37

the headache might be the morning after pill btw. massive dose of hormones.

lulumama · 27/06/2007 16:38

what do you call a couple who uses the withdrawal method?

parents

It it is NOT reliable contraception, if your new chap does not want more kids he needs to stick a condom on his willy before he goes any where near you

sperm can be released even before ejaculation, so it is not reliable

it can be used in conjunction with temping and checking your cervical mucus, but as a stand alone it is not good

so, you are on day 9, sperm can live up to 5 days , an egg can live 24 hours, there is a tiny chance of getting caught.....

if you do not want more children, look at having a coil...much more reliable and no pills to remember, and not affected by D&V or antibiotics

lulumama · 27/06/2007 16:38

oh, you took MAP

sorry !

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 16:39

that's alright, you are quite right,we have been silly.

what is it with blokes and condoms? anyone would think you were asking them to wear a rubber glove over it!!

OP posts:
lulumama · 27/06/2007 16:41

i'd definitely consider a coil

Macdog · 27/06/2007 16:42

Go to your local Family Planning clinic and they will discuss your options with you

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 16:43

are there no side effects? have read bad stuff about mirena,is the coil the same?

OP posts:
lulumama · 27/06/2007 16:44

I have a mirena, had it almost 2 years. once it settled down, it has been problem free.. doesn;t agree with everyone, but i am very happy with it

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 16:58

will have a look into the mirena.just only heard bad stuff about it.does it use the same hormones as the pill?

i wish he'd just put a condom on tbh, would make life easier especially as it's him that doesn't want a baby!!

anyone who uses the mini pill about?

appledumpling · 27/06/2007 19:10

I'm on the mini-pill (Micropor) and was on the full pill before we decided it was time for babies.

Full pill - I had no side effects apart from a slightly decreased sex drive but nothing to complain about. You get 12 hours grace and I think I only ever missed 1 pill and of course it regulates your periods. Plus all the horrendous PMT I had suffered all but vanished.

Mini pill - no side effects either. You only get 3 hours grace which is not so funny. I find it easier to remember to take last thing at night. Periods aren't regulated and can be all over the place for a while but I'm still bf so haven't had one yet.

I went on the mini-pill as it's less hormone-laden than the full pill, I can take it while bf plus if I were to get pregnant accidentally it really wouldn't be a major problem.

HTH.

nickytwotimes · 27/06/2007 19:11

hello again tm
i did use the mini pill a long time ago and it did work, but i had to take it at exactly the same time each day within a margin of something ridiculous like 1 hour. it does have few side effects, but can make your priods very irregular, which was a big down side for me. also, due to the way it works, it doesn't always stop conception - rather, it prevents implantation. this is fine unless you have "ishoos" with that sort of thing. (i'm a catholic btw but i don't have those issues obviously - that's a whole other thread...!)any hellp?

nickytwotimes · 27/06/2007 19:11

x-post. 3 hrs apparently.

Tiggly · 27/06/2007 19:31

I'm on the minipill implant which lasts 3 years, no pills to remember! It's great! Also not affected by antibiotics and d&v. The FPC website is very useful for making an informed choice.hth.

pinkteddy · 27/06/2007 19:34

I found with the mini pill that I was bleeding more or less constantly - not exactly conduicive (is that how you spell it?) to a good sex life. I do know someone that got pregnant while taking the mini pill so may not be the best choice for you.

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 19:34

thanks i think i will probably go for the mini pill.it seems to have less side effects and risks from what i can see.only thing that is bothering me slightly about it is there is an increased risk of ectopic pg apparently.it must work the same way as the morning after pill cos apparently with that it's increased risk of ectopic if it fails.i'm getting pains in my tubes now and only took it at lunch time i think it must be in my head!!

OP posts:
TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 19:35

x posts pinkteddy - thanks for that.i don't fancy constant periods! maybe it will have to be combined pill then??

OP posts:
appledumpling · 27/06/2007 19:35

Nickytwotimes - it says 3hrs on the leaflet in the box but it could be different for other brands perhaps?

nickytwotimes · 27/06/2007 19:39

ta, apple - don't worry, i'm not using it anymore!

HelloMama · 27/06/2007 19:44

Just so you know, there is a newer mini pill now available called Cerazette that is more effective than older styles and it also has a 12 hour window period to remember to take it like the ordinary combined pill. It is very expensive to prescribe compared to the older style ones, like Micronor, so lots of GP's won't give it out unless you specifically ask for it. But most family planning clinics will give it to you as a first choice as they know it is so much more effective.

pinkteddy · 27/06/2007 19:45

The combined pill is very effective. If you are a smoker aged over 35 you won't be able to take it. If you are in good health and don't smoke, think you can take until the menopause. The family planning clinic or your GP should give you a health check anyway before prescribing. Loads of useful info on the fpa website as I think someone already mentioned. www.fpa.org.uk/information/leaflets

TaylorsMummy · 27/06/2007 20:15

thanks for the link.reading through that i think i'll go for the mini pill.the side effects of some things look awful.why's it always women that have to have all the side effects?
