What is this? Alcohol related (I think!)

I am not a huge drinker, I don't ever drink to the point of being drunk and certainly never enough to not be 100% on control of myself. No judgment on those that do, I'm a control freak and couldn't handle it.

I do however have a g+t at the weekends, usually one, sometimes 2.

A couple of weeks ago I had a work night out and had 2 drinks and the rest was plain tonic water, I felt great, got home, fell asleep, woke up 15 mins later shaking uncontrollably and feeling so unwell. Then threw up and passed out on the floor. Woke up the next morning feeling a bit ropey but generally ok.

The next couple weeks pass by with no issues. Then last night I have my 2 Gin and tonics, have a bath, fall asleep and again wake up with the shakes so bad, vomited and passed out.

Am I developing an intolerance to gin? 😱

Of course it could be coincidental but the g+t is the only thing that is consistent with the 2 incidents.

I ate well both times the same as everyone else so I don't think it was hinkey food related.

Well I'd need to drink a shed load more than that in order to have the same effect. I wouldn't have said it was alcohol related but I'm no expert.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 19:27

Maybe it was coincidence then, I was trying to link the two events to see if there was something I could do to stop it happening again because it's grim.

I would also go to gp and ask for liver function test.

madmum5811 · 27/12/2018 19:30

I know someone who is allergic to tonic, if that helps.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 19:33

Liver function you say? Would I have other symptoms if my liver wasn't functioning correctly?

Blondiecub0109 · 27/12/2018 19:36

Quinine or sweetener (aspartame?) in the tonic if it was slimline?

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 27/12/2018 19:36

You need a liver function test.

You may be intolerant to alcohol.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 19:41

Right. Liver function test it is. I'm the mean time I'll stop drinking any alcohol just incase.

Quartz2208 · 27/12/2018 19:45

Look up quinine allergy/intolerance I would be more inclined to think it was the amount of tonic water (therefore quinine) that caused it

costacoffeecup · 27/12/2018 19:51

Yes have a test. Is it worth experimenting with a different drink to see if it's just the gin? but maybe liver function test first!!

AuditAngel · 27/12/2018 19:54

I have a friend that is allergic to alcohol

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 19:55

I've never had it with any other alcohol, wine, baileys other spirits. I have on a very rare occasion had a lot more to drink and had zero I'll effect so it's a very random thing.
I don't think it can be a tonic thing because I drink that most days (sans gin!) with no issues.
I will go and get a check up though for peace of mind.

babysharkah · 27/12/2018 19:56

My mum is allergic to quinine

Notquiteagandt · 27/12/2018 19:57

Was there any fruit in the drinks? Could be an allergy to something

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 20:04

I wasn't buying the ones when out and it was a bar so I'll assume it was Gordon's and a big standard tonic water. No fruit.
Yesterday's was spiced gin and shwepps tonic. The only thing I'm allergic to that I know of is shellfish and game bird meat and codine all of which have come on suddenly after pregnancy.

It was really similar symptom wise as when I eat duck or prawns so that's why I wondered about a building allergy.

perimenopause hit me like a sledge hammer, became intolerant of so many things food/drink/make up/skin wise. So bloody annoying.

ivykaty44 · 27/12/2018 20:20

I would be extremely cautious about drinking tonic water again and get checked out with your doctor

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 20:22

Yes I'll not drink alcohol or tonic until I've been seen.

I've only drank gin twice and both times been vomiting 4-6 hours later... I've just come to the conclusion it doesn't agree with me!!

LarkDescending · 27/12/2018 21:38

I don’t have the answers OP, but coincidentally have been googling “acquired alcohol intolerance“ this evening. I’ve hardly drunk alcohol in the last year or two, but one small glass of mulled wine on Christmas Eve made me feel very ill indeed and resulted in a virtually sleepless and very sweaty night (& much the same happened when I had a glass of white wine early in December). So much for my festive season! Hope you can enjoy a G&T again in the future Gin

Palestperson · 27/12/2018 22:42

My mum suddenly couldn’t tolerate alcohol when she hit perimenopause. She could manage one small glass of wine but if she had 2, she would get the shakes and throw up a couple of hours later. She’d always been able to drink 3 glasses with no problems before then. It lasted a few years and then she was fine with it again.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/12/2018 22:59

I'm 31, surely I'm not perimenopausal?! Although saying that my periods are getting more unpredictable by the month. Confused

OP posts:
madmum5811 · 27/12/2018 23:02

peri. is about hormones, I wonder if you have a hormone imbalance?

MissSmiley · 27/12/2018 23:05

You said you have a reaction to codeine, what happens with that?
Have you ever heard of SOD?

GinandGingerBeer · 27/12/2018 23:09

Hmmmm! Irregular periods? Is it late, could you be pregnant?
