Has anyone had this and please tell me it stopped hurting!!! I had an extraction a week ago and had not have 5 injections to numb me up for extraction. The nerve was very aggravated and I had been on antibiotics but only for 2 days before extraction. The dentist eventually injected directly into my nerve which was bloody agony! He did get the tooth out but two days later I was in agony again and after a trip to an emergency private dentist it was established I had dry socket. She cleaned it and packed it with the clove dressing but if has obviously fallen out and it is hideous and has had me in pain all over Christmas. I am managing with pain killers and saline mouthwashes but I cannot carry on like this! Should I go back to the dentist or will it just heal? Please help!

Poor you. I had this and it was worse than labour.

You need to have it repacked. Call 111 and see if there is an emergency dentist? If not, Do you have a 24 hour chemist near you? Bit of gauze in clove oil

It hurts because the air is getting to the bone

ChristmaspArti · 26/12/2018 23:19

Phone your GP in the morning. Mine was happy to prescribe codeine over the phone for it. You need something stronger than paracetamol.

ThespianTendencies · 26/12/2018 23:23

Solasum So sorry you have had this too. It really is hideous. I will call the dentist who helped me, again tomorrow. She was really good and made me feel much calmer than the original butcher! I have never experienced such ongoing pain. You'd think that after an extraction, which is terrifying enough in itself, taht at least the pain will be gone! But this is worse than ever. I hope it clears up soon and that it all heals and I can get back to normal. Who'd have thought a little tooth would cause so much bloody trouble!

I am just concerned it will never heal!

OP posts:
Solasum · 26/12/2018 23:30

It will heal, promise! Once it is repacked you will feel human again

ThespianTendencies · 26/12/2018 23:36

Solasum even hearing that makes me feel better! It is shockingly painful.

I remember wishing I could saw off my head. At least in labour the pain isn’t constant. Hang on in there

shuthefrontdoor · 26/12/2018 23:40

I had this about 3 weeks back, the pain is awful. She washed the hole out with mouthwash and re-packed it, it felt great afterwards, she also gave me 2 lots of antibiotics. Go back tomorrow and see someone x

ThespianTendencies · 26/12/2018 23:42

Thank you - I will call the dentist tomorrow as soon as I can!

ThespianTendencies · 26/12/2018 23:44

shutthefrontdoor It really is horrendous. And I feel so ridiculous complaining about it when other people are having issues with illness and life threatening stuff. Ugh! I will call them tomrrow and hope she can repack it. Though the idea of anyone coming anywhere near my face fills me with dread and horror! This is the stuff of nightmares. How long did your pain last?

NikiFree · 26/12/2018 23:47

I had this and you have my utmost sympathy. It is hell. All consuming agonising pain.

I got codeine from my GP and it didn't work. It doesn't on nerve pain.

The clot that is supposed to form in the socket has dropped out and you need it packed. Get thee to a dentist. Also I had a severe infection in mine which was causing alot of the pain. I felt better very quickly with antibiotics. Get it checked out by a dentist.

ThespianTendencies · 26/12/2018 23:49

Thank you NikeFree I have had it packed once which was an enormous relief but it has fallen out! I am going to call again tomrrow and hope she can re pack it. It is horrendous pain.

I had dry socket after an extraction a few years ago. You have all my sympathies, It's the worst pain ever - labour is a breeze compared to it!!
The dentist said I had the worst mouth infection he had ever seen, I got strong antibiotics and was warned not to touch a drop of alcohol on them because I would projectile vomit!
Get to a dentist ASAP and get the strongest painkillers you can. Hope it improves soon.

NikiFree · 26/12/2018 23:55

I was deeply shocked by the pain. You cannot ignore it or act natural with it.

Feels as though someone is drilling into your cheek bone with an electric drill...or it did with me anyway.

If you've had it packed it may also be infection. I thought mine had dropped out but it hadn't. The dentist said my gum was very swollen and sore and I had 2 different antibiotics for about 10 days. I started to feel much better not long after starting antibiotics.

ThespianTendencies · 27/12/2018 00:00

Thank you all - it is somehow comforting to know others have had it and that it did eventually clear up! I am going to call dentist tomorrow and see if she can do anything more for me. The gum and general area is very sore. I was on antibiotics prior to the extraction but not any more. I hope there is no infection there, I am sick to death of the pain. it is shocking. Off to try and get some sleep!

I god I remember that pain. I had it for a week and nothing touched it. Rang the dentist for an appt and the receptionist said, yes tooth removal is painful it will go away. I insisted on an appt and they could not believe I’d put up with it for a week. Packing it will give instant relief!

Hidingtonothing · 27/12/2018 00:25

If you have a 24 hour supermarket open near you Oragel is good, the normal strength one will be on the shelf (usually with the bonjela etc) and does work. The high strength one is even better but you'd have to wait til there's a pharmacist on duty to get that OTC. Hope you can get some relief for now, and that you can get it properly sorted soon.

FoxFoxSierra · 27/12/2018 02:29

You need to make it bleed so you have another blood clot in there for the gum to heal over, sounds horrible I know but it's the fastest way to get rid of it! I couldn't get a dentist appointment when I had it - that's a whole other thread and was fucking awful but after lots of googling I decided to try that and it worked! The relief was incredible

jq28 · 27/12/2018 02:36

It needs irrigating and packing so call 111 and see and emergency dentist. Painkillers in the meantime.
It has nothing to with injections or the nerve.

NikiFree · 27/12/2018 06:45

Nothing to do with the nerve Confused

My dentist told me that the empty socket leaves underlying nerves exposed, which is very painful.

It is everything to do with the nerve and that's why packing it makes it feel instantly better

Hubanmao · 27/12/2018 07:34

I’ve had this too - and it WILL get better. You need to know that!
Once it’s repacked you’ll begin to feel human. In the meantime, Dose yourself up with the strongest painkillers you can get, curl up in the comfiest position you can and let everyone else wait on you hand and foot. You just need to ride this out until you can get it sorted

OliviaBenson · 27/12/2018 07:48

When it's been packed again don't gargle with anything as that's what can dislodge it. I've had it and it's horrendous.

jq28 · 27/12/2018 07:55

@NikiFree ok sound ignore me I only do this for a living Hmm

NGC2017 · 27/12/2018 08:16

A good clean, repack and antibiotics. It's a pain I will never forget. It's hideous. I feel sorry for you but I promise once it's looked at it will get better
