My 4yo has the start of chickenpox. Is it highly likely my toddler will get it too?

They share a room, cups, baths and cuddles. The little one will get it won't she? Does this mean I am in for a nightmare 3 or 4 weeks?

Unfortunetely yes. What age is your little one and did you bf. My friend has a dd who is 4 and although her sister has had them she never took them as she still had her mothers immunity. My dd1 took chicken pox and then about 2 weeks later dd2 took them. Poor you I will be thinking about you.

Hulababy · 17/06/2007 20:29

Very likely. Do you think she was exposed at the same time? If so then she is likely to come out around the same time. If not, will be in 10-14 days time.

Might not be a nightmare though. Depends on how bad they get it.

Yes - your toddler will probably get it. Both my DCs were crotchety for a day (DS was 2.10; DD was 1.11) but then perfectly happy and normal - just looked awful with all the spots!

colditz · 17/06/2007 20:31

Yes, and probably a stronger dose. Sorry.

stressteddy · 17/06/2007 20:31

Yep, fraid so!
Hope it isn't too bad for you all

I would think so, stock up on bicarb for baths and calamine lotion or cream and piriton syrup. Mine had spots within days of each other. Her behaviour should have been a clue it was coming. My dd (2yo) was bottle fed and my ds (then 7m) was breast fed it made no difference. Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones ekra.

My DD2 is 21 months old. I stopped breastfeeding when she was 11 months old.

Oh, I so hope they were exposed at the same time. Two weeks ago we went to a christening party swarming with children. Please let it be from then - I'd rather they had it together.

I found that ds had chickenpox while he was in the bath with dd. I then got it (awful) but not dd

francagoestohollywood · 17/06/2007 20:52

pistachio I had it at 34 and it was horrible. I felt very bad for 5 days and weak for weeks.

chocciedooby · 17/06/2007 20:56

Crikey I didn't realise it could be that long after.
DS1 has just got over CP and I have it marked in my diary to expect DS2 to get it this wk. That is based on 2 weeks after DS1. We are flying home to the UK on 27th so keeping fingers crossed he gets it overnight! His behaviour has been out of sorts all weekend so thinking could be a sign?!

Yes, you need to rest as much as you can. It's really horrible.

oliveoil · 17/06/2007 20:59

dd2 was a royal pita and I was getting quite annoyed

said to people good god she is a moaner atm

next day, spots

ekra · 17/06/2007 21:01

Pistachio - poor you. Luckily DH and I had it as children.

chocciedooby · 17/06/2007 21:16

Looks like it will be spots for us then!
Poor you Pistacio, hope you get some rest.

Practicalpet · 17/06/2007 21:22

Chocciedooby/Oliveoil my dd was a monkey, on the step 3x a day for two days before spots. ds was much worse as he was tiny, he didn't understand what was happening to him. I pray he doesn't get it again. Is it true that once they had it it is unlikely to reappear??

Pistachio hope you are feeling better soon.

chocciedooby · 18/06/2007 22:59

Still no spots here.
Anyone else?

flibbertyjibbet · 18/06/2007 23:23

DS1 (2.5) got a few spots one week, we thought he'd had a very mild case. following week a few more spots in a different place, again we thought 'oh thats it then'. Third week DS2 (12m) came down with it full blown on the thursday, Sunday DS1 started just popping out in spots all over before our very eyes. So he'd had spots on and off 3 weeks by the end of it. He would have incubated it for 2 weeks before the spots. It had been going round the nursery for 2 months! So yes they both tend to get it from each other, but I found that each one had 3 horrible nights when the spots drive them mad and they feel really ill, then they were back to normal. good luck and remember its better to get them both done with it at once! And just to make you feel better, we were on holiday when it happened!

Elibean · 19/06/2007 08:40

Awaiting spots here too, better to wait in good company

dd1 (3.5) and dd2 (7 months) exposed at the same time, 13 days ago..dd1 shared a cup with girl who had it 48 hrs later...and its rife at dd1's pre-school.

That said, dd1 has been well exposed twice before, and not a pox in sight
