Please tell me coccyx pain will go reasonably quickly

I was walking down the stairs yesterday in socks, slipped, landed on what I assume is my coccyx. I was at the bottom of the stairs for 5 mins, unable to lay down or sit up.. just kinda stuck in the middle. All hot and clammy with my vision greying and pins and needles in both legs.

DH managed to get me onto my knees then onto my feet veeeerrrryyy slowly. He walked me through to a chair in the kitchen as apparently I was screeching for sugar (I think I realised I was in shock and my addled brain thought sugar would help). He sat me down on the bench and the pain was so intense I blacked out. Woke on the floor with DH shouting at me to wake up. He says I passed out and was twitching all over for about 20secs. The dizziness passed and I was left with buzzing in my ears for 10mins.

Feel much better now but omg, the pain when I sit down/stand up/bend over/cough/sneeze/walk up or down stairs/roll over in bed!!!! It feels deep within the very base of my back and bum.

DH was all for ringing an ambulance thinking I've broken something and I think I terrified him with the passing out twitching malarkey but I just dosed myself up on painkillers and went to bed as the thought of sat night at a&e or minor injuries made me cry more than the pain and I figure they can't do anything about it anyway. Safe to say I didn't sleep last night.

Please tell me it'll pass! It's half term now, DH back to work tomorrow and 3 kids (one with sn) to look after. Feeling very sorry for myself and my sore butt.

And I did type that with paragraphs! App doesn't like paragraphs apparently!

Sounds like you've fractured it. I did the same this time last year. I had 3 weeks off work but there is nothing much you can do.
No painkillers touched the pain so I don't bother. Lots of rest and don't sit down - I ate and worked on my computer standing at the kitchen island.

My sympathies, the pain is horrific at the start.

jamaisjedors · 21/10/2018 08:54

Can you find the kids a space in a holiday club for half term to allow you to rest.?

SilverHairedCat · 21/10/2018 08:57

www.nhs.uk/conditions/tailbone-pain-coccydynia/

Sounds like you've done a hell of a number on it. I fell on a dance floor, drunk as a skunk. By god I felt that the next day v I'm afraid I was in a lot of pain for weeks. I couldn't sit in my office chair properly for ages...

bananasandwicheseveryday · 21/10/2018 08:59

TBH, because you lost consciousness, I think I'd get to a&e to get checked out.
FWIW, I damaged my coccyx when I was a teenager and it was months before it was properly back to normal and completely pain free.

upsidedownfrown · 21/10/2018 09:01

Damn. There's me thinking someone would be along to say it would just hurt for a couple of days.

Alas, no space in holiday club. Not many around here. I was helping a friend out with childcare for a couple of days at the end of the week. Think I'm gonna have to let her down.

Ds keeps asking if I need to go get a cast on my butt. Lovely concerned child.

I made the mistake of sitting for 20 mins when I was up in the night. Won't be doing that again.

Have a horrible chest cough at the moment and it's hurting every time I cough

Yes, sounds like you've broken it! 😢 I was fine standing up or lying down but like the others, sitting was a problem for a long time. Not what you want to hear, sorry!

Glowlamp · 21/10/2018 09:15

I don’t think I can be of any help but wanted to offer my sympathy.
My coccyx was displaced through childbirth (2nd child), it was a nightmare. After a year of physio I admitted defeat as getting no where. My GP recommended an osteopath and the relief after one session was amazing. I went back 3 more times to make sure!!
Do get checked out though, is sounds like you’ve had quite a thud. Poor you, try and take it easy. Rest & repair.

upsidedownfrown · 21/10/2018 09:16

Might try to get on the list for ooh docs to get something stronger than paracetamol

ihatethecold · 21/10/2018 09:20

I had coccydinia that took about 3 years to go.
Hope you recover soon op.

user6666 · 21/10/2018 09:23

Please get it checked out.

I had a fast tumble off my horse about 4 years ago, when I hit the deck I went everything you did. The passing out, white lights, sick etc etc. I got up, hobbled back to the yard, still throwing up from the pain. Laid down at home, some painkillers and after about a week it seems to get better.

Roll on 6 months I woke up paralysed from the waist down. In the accident I had actually fractured my spine, right down by the coccyx but it had started to heal, was pressing on nerves and growing bony spurs.

Doctor wasn't happy when I told him about my accident and did nothing about it.

I'm back to my normal craziness but that's thanks to steroid injections. It will need to operated on but we are leaving it as long as possible

user6666 · 21/10/2018 09:25

To add, when they do my injections they have to go up through my coccyx into my L3-4 and L4-5. It's hideous

lostintime17 · 21/10/2018 09:33

Many years ago I was pushed on the stairs and fell back and landed on my coccyx. Unfortunately it took 4/5 weeks before it felt better.
I injured it again during the birth of my 3rd child and couldn't sit properly for weeks (had to sit on pillow)
It finally got better after about 6 weeks.
Take it easy and try your best to rest.

PerverseConverse · 21/10/2018 10:24

Definitely get seen by a doctor. I fell ice skating when I was 16 and was told by the GP that it would take 6 weeks for the pain to go completely. I'm now 42 and still have coccyx pain. I recommend ice packs and a special cushion with a cut out bit to relieve the pressure.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 21/10/2018 10:28

I fractured my coccyx 4 years ago in eactly the same scenario, I was in agony for months, unfortunately there isnt much that can be done.

Painkillers and a piles cushion helped.

upsidedownfrown · 21/10/2018 11:59

OOH doc has sent me to a&e so now been in minors for an hour waiting for someone to come prod me

Glad you are getting checked out.

tabbycat1234 · 21/10/2018 14:26

Hi just to say I hope you recover well. I fell on the stairs and broke my coccyx a few years ago. Big hug. If you find it doesn't heal/settle quickly I wish I'd known sooner that some "women's physios" can help with this. Glad you're getting it seen at a and e
Xxx

Karrwomannghia · 21/10/2018 14:29

I did this exact same thing in January but not as badly as you- didn’t get checked out - but it still hurts in some positions so I hope you get something for it.

GhoulMythicalMoooaning · 21/10/2018 14:30

I fell over and smacked it, took 18 months to heal!

fireplacetiles · 21/10/2018 14:37

Mine was also displaced during childbirth, fed my son standing up for weeks and it took a couple of years to totally heal. DD kicked herself in the bum on a trampoline and bruised hers, took at least 18 months before the pain went totally, it's not much fun, sorryConfused

Pretendingtobe · 21/10/2018 14:52

Mine is shattered. You can move the pieces around. Cool party piece.
Couldn't be fixed, and was swollen and painful for about 3 months.
Now I'm fine, but can't do crunches ever again!

auberbene · 21/10/2018 15:17

I fractured mine during childbirth and I remember how horrific the pain was.

You have my sympathies, OP

upsidedownfrown · 21/10/2018 15:26

Well... It's fractured. They think. They didn't even bother doing an x-ray. Just poked it and I yelped so much the doc was certain it must be broken so got senior doc to come check me out and he agreed. Said they don't really x-ray coccyx as treatment would be the same regardless.

Have a lovely strong codiene prescription and am exhausted so may actually get some sleep tonight.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Glad I'm not being laughed at for such a silly injury

A doughnut cushion may help you to sit down more comfortably.
