Please tell me coccyx pain will go reasonably quickly

I was walking down the stairs yesterday in socks, slipped, landed on what I assume is my coccyx. I was at the bottom of the stairs for 5 mins, unable to lay down or sit up.. just kinda stuck in the middle. All hot and clammy with my vision greying and pins and needles in both legs.

DH managed to get me onto my knees then onto my feet veeeerrrryyy slowly. He walked me through to a chair in the kitchen as apparently I was screeching for sugar (I think I realised I was in shock and my addled brain thought sugar would help). He sat me down on the bench and the pain was so intense I blacked out. Woke on the floor with DH shouting at me to wake up. He says I passed out and was twitching all over for about 20secs. The dizziness passed and I was left with buzzing in my ears for 10mins.

Feel much better now but omg, the pain when I sit down/stand up/bend over/cough/sneeze/walk up or down stairs/roll over in bed!!!! It feels deep within the very base of my back and bum.

DH was all for ringing an ambulance thinking I've broken something and I think I terrified him with the passing out twitching malarkey but I just dosed myself up on painkillers and went to bed as the thought of sat night at a&e or minor injuries made me cry more than the pain and I figure they can't do anything about it anyway. Safe to say I didn't sleep last night.

Please tell me it'll pass! It's half term now, DH back to work tomorrow and 3 kids (one with sn) to look after. Feeling very sorry for myself and my sore butt.

I did the same first 3-4 weeks I was in agony and didn’t know when the pain would end
It probably took approx 6 months to feel completely better although still now 10 months later I sometimes need to get up and move as I get a sore twinge type pain
I really do feel for you x

Also recommend a donut cushion. I wish I'd had one, it would have made life a lot less painful at work.

Hope you can get some rest, it's not a fun injury, no laughing here!

SilverHairedCat · 21/10/2018 16:00

BTW, looks like you can buy them in pharmacies, send DH out for one ASAP.

Good call with the donut cushion guys. There's one in stock at my local boots so sending DH tomorrow. In the meantime I'm alternating between laying in the foetal position and sitting with a memory foam pillow under each cheek!

If the donut turns out not right for you Argos do a coccyx wedge or there are loads of different ones on amazon. Did you get advice re whether to sit or not or ice etc?

I remember lying on my front with frozen peas on my butt watching tv!

upsidedownfrown · 21/10/2018 18:17

Only advice i was given was to sit or lay in whatever position I find most comfy, take my codiene and take laxatives cos if the codiene makes me constipated it's gonna hurt! The joys!

I may just buy an array of cushions to see what works. Dare say the kids will make use of any I don't use

With hindsight I really wish I'd taken a bit longer off work as my job involves sitting for long periods and not enough moving around. But I just wanted to get back to normal

Get well soon
