DS2 has blue lips in the morning, and is now being referred.....

Ds2 has been waking with blue lips ( and the area around his lips) recently. Nothing else is blue (ie tingue, finger nails etc), we went to GP today, and now DS2 is being referred to a padiatric specialist. Any ideas what it could be anyone? Quite worried to be honest, although he is fine apart from that and is generally driving us insane touching everything he's not meant to.

All the medical websites have blue lips as a symptom of bronchiolitits, but I would imagine he would have other symptoms too. Hope you get this cleared up soon

deegward · 26/08/2004 15:11

He had that in December and ended up with an inhaler, thanks mudda

Sorry I don't know what it could be, but wanted to give you my best wishes. I hope it turns out to be nothing. When will you see the specialist?

Jimjams · 26/08/2004 15:18

ds1 had bronchiolotis as a baby and the paediatrician we saw said it could take months to clear up.

deegward · 26/08/2004 18:43

First appointment we could get was Monday 20th of September, and that's going BUPA, god knows howlong it would have been if we hadn't had that.

My dd also has blue lips sometimes, and also her cheeks and occasionally hands, arms, feet.
we have been told it is absolutley nothing to worry about it, and it is "just one of these things"
She did have a heart condition which is now repaired, but turning blue was NOTHING to do with this.
She just seems to react to cold, or when she has a cold. Hopefully your ds2 is just the same, and all will be fine.

Had our appointment today. Doctor found a slight murmur on ds2 heart, but feels its nothing to worry about. But is referring us to the Royal Brompton for a scan to be on the safe side, he says the worse, worse, worse case senario is a small hole in his heart, but stressed this was v unlikely. Feel happier, but also nervous. Should get next appointment in two to four weeks. I know there are lots of you with children with MUCH bigger problems, but this is my little one. Thank you to all

Deegward - hey, you're entitled to be nervous. FWIW lots of children have 'innocent ' murmurs which turn out to be nothing, and the best way to find out is by echo (scan). If you want to know more about it, just shout.

misdee · 27/09/2004 19:53

my dd2 has a soft systolic murmur, which was found after a general check up. it took ages from finding the murmur to having the scan and i was going loopy with it. i was very concerned as they were making a huge deal about dh's DCM.

Good luckxxxxxx

deegward · 27/09/2004 23:43

Thank you all, I take this is a non invasive procedure? If not please let me know, otherwise I will update as I find out

Yes it is non-invasive Deegward. 3 of my children were scanned because of soft murmers. It is very quick and the children liked to watch the coloured picture of the blood travelling through their hearts. The radiographer told them that is what fruit pastilled look like travelling to their tummies once they were swallowed. They loved it. My youngest was 18 months at the time and he lifted his top desperate to get the scanner on it
They were all fine with no need to go back.

luckymum · 28/09/2004 14:13

Deegward

It's an ultrasound scan similar to those you have when you are pregnant. It can take anything from a few minutes to an hour to perform. The main problem is getting a young baby to lie still for long enough and depending on how long the test is some babies are sedated, don't worry too much about that though, they are used to coping with wriggly babies! They use colour on the screen to show the blood flow and the operator often records the scan on video for the cardiologist to view.

There's some info here if you click on cardiac investigations it gives you more detail.

Goodness, good luck with this Deegward. Hope it all turns out to be mere thoroughness on the health team's part.

deegward · 28/09/2004 21:24

Now I feel awful, just weighed ds2( yesterdy we were asked had he lost any weight, NO said dh and I) he now weighs less than he did at 35 weeks, he is now 18mths (75 weeks)! He was 9.7 kg then and now is only 9kg. I know I weighed him around his birthday and he was 24lb now only 20lb 6 months later {sad]

pupuce · 28/09/2004 21:51

Well he is more active now ! He wasn't walking at 35 weeks !!
Have a look where this new weight would put him on a centile chart...

luckymum · 28/09/2004 21:51

Hugs deegward - don't feel bad This will get sorted, try not to worry.

deegward · 29/09/2004 16:14

He used to be in the 75 centile, and now is just making 2nd. Have tried to phone consultant today, but secretary's number just goes onto voice mail. Have tried to speak to HV but htey are not the office today. Taking ds2 to baby clinic tomorrow as I know HV will be there. Just feel like crying

OP posts:
bundle · 29/09/2004 16:16

deegward try the main number of the hospital and ask for the dept, not the consultant. use those tears on the phone so that SOMEONE talks to you. insist, you can't get all upset like this.

luckymum · 05/10/2004 12:58

Deegward - just wondering how you and ds2 are? How did you get on at the clinic?

deegward · 06/10/2004 16:07

Had ds2 weighed and although he has lost weight they will keep an eye on it, and we've not to worry. Appointment came for Tuesday 12th at the Royal Brompton for his scan so will know more then. I swing from looking at him and saying oh he's OK to, Oh god he's sleeping alot, really blue etc etc. Think I will feel better after Tuesday.

OP posts:
muddaofsuburbia · 06/10/2004 16:10

Deegward - just caught up with all this - so sorry you're going through the mill atm, but very glad to hear that things are moving forward. Will be thinking of you and ds2 on tuesday

luckymum · 06/10/2004 17:29

Glad you aren't having to wait too long deegward - keep us posted.

deegward · 12/10/2004 15:55

Ok, just back from Royal Brompton. We saw such a lovely consultant, and he gave ds2 his echo scan thingy. Heart absolutely fine, has a innocent murmur which he will probably grow out of, so all is well. Still doesn't explain the blue lip thing, but as there is nothing wrong with him we can only assume that the blue lips is just a quirk of Sam.

Thank you to all for your support, although my head told me nothing to worry about there was always a nagging doubt. Thanks again Dx
