Constantly starving

uppitydoodah · 01/10/2018 19:38

Don’t know if I’ve just got myself in a bad habit of eating far too much, and not knowing what an empty stomach feels like (or a full one for that matter).
But anyway, I’m about a stone overweight and for the past few weeks I’ve been really hungry.
I’m starting slimming world next week as it’s all got out of control.
So I’m eating breakfast, then an hour later being starving, then lunch, then more food in the afternoon, then tea and then cereal before bed.
So today was 8.15am protein shake with banana and almond butter
9.15am cheese on toast
10am biscuit
11.30am small bowl of pesto pasta
12pm a coconut mini choc pot
3pm a mini soreen bar
4pm a slice of millionaires shortbread
5pm fish cake, mash, peas
5.30pm a few biscuits, couple of mini chocolates.
7pm a bowl of ice cream and I’m sat here at 7.30 with a rumbling tummy.
This is never right.

What can I do to stop being constantly hungry.
I’ve only done about 6000 steps today so haven’t burnt lots of calories by moving lots.
Maybe I’m eating the wrong things, but today’s calories must be exceeding 2500/3000 calories and I’m still hungry 😩

Just worked out it’s 2600 calories today on my fitness pal. And I’ve only burnt 2000.

I hear you and can join you in scoffing the kitchen through!! 🙁. I'm at WW but I've only lost a stone in 9 months!

Can we blame the colder weather? 😉

ninemillionbicycles · 01/10/2018 19:49

Put this in weight loss chat for some good advice?

Dacresmallwilly · 01/10/2018 19:50

Not an expert but I'd say that you need to cut out the sugary stuff/simple carbs as this will make you hungry quite soon after you've eaten it.

uppitydoodah · 01/10/2018 19:50

I wonder if it is the colder weather,
My stomach is genuinely rumbling and I could eat another whole meal an hour after dinner.
I wonder if we are eating the wrong things?
Or maybe if you start to overeat your stomach stretches?
It’s doing my bloody head in though!

I have been on a semi good diet until I lost the plot a few weeks ago. And I was rarely hungry then. And on 1000 less calories a day than what I’m eating now.
I was having protein shake for breakfast, ham to snack on, poached eggs for lunch and fish/meat with sweet potato and veg for tea. And a bowl of 100 calorie protein ice cream for pudding.
Since I’ve doubled my calorie intake I am sssooo hungry.

I second the suggestion that you have too many simple cars.
Also you're eating little and often. Eat 3 proper sized meals with decent amounts of protein and cut out snacking. Snacking raises your insulin levels which in turn makes you hungry.

woolduvet · 01/10/2018 19:54

I'd say you need to up your protein and fats and drop refined carbs

GoldenBlue · 01/10/2018 19:58

I agree with others, too much sugar and simple carbs, they make you feel hungry. Switch to higher protein and on,y have complex carbs like brown rice. Aim for lower GI to avoid the sugar lows that are making you feel hungry.

uppitydoodah · 01/10/2018 19:58

Ok. I’ll try re the carbs.
Food plan tomorrow is
Protein shake with banana and almond butter
An apple for snack
Soup and whole meal pitta for lunch
Maybe berries for a snack
Homemade lean chilli and rice for tea.
I don’t think I’m having a big enough portion at meal times. Meals are around 300 calories each so I’m starving an hour later.
It’s hard too as when I work I eat breakfast at 6am, then by 10am I’m ready for lunch, 2pm I have a second lunch and 6pm dinner.

Need to find something I can eat at 10am that will fill me up, isn’t a proper lunch, and requires no cooking or just a microwave.
Oh and can be eaten in a 10 minute break.

Boiled egg
Rice cake and peanut butter
Greek yog full fat and berries

Whyiseveryonesoangry · 01/10/2018 20:06

Why not take a boiled egg or two to work to snack on?

uppitydoodah · 01/10/2018 20:07

Got none of those things in!
Was going to pop to shop after work tomorrow lunch time!
Will bear in mind tho.
Some boiled egg, cucumber and rice cakes would be a great 10am snack.
May have to stick with pitta, cream cheese and salad tomorrow.
Then soup with no pitta for lunch after work!

I get really hungry when I'm tired and stressed.

CorianderSnell · 01/10/2018 20:13

Sorry for asking if it’s not relevant to you/sensitive, but are you definitely not pregnant? I felt a compulsive need to eat at almost hourly intervals in early pregnancy.

Talith · 01/10/2018 20:19

My only suggestion is to try to go longer between eating and perhaps try two big meals not serial grazing. You've 9 small meals or snacks there and the day's not over. I had pea and ham soup and buttered bread at 11 and Kiev and potatoes at 7. Probably similar calories overall but I'm not peckish now. It sort of trains you out of thinking about food if the only food you're having is something that takes a bit more prep.

Singlenotsingle · 01/10/2018 20:19

How about a banana omelette for breakfast (2 beaten eggs swooshed up with a mashed banana and fried in Frylight)? Apple for snack. Soup with a brown pitta for lunch. Dinner is lean chicken, baked potato and veg or baked beans. Followed by another apple (gala).

Bimgy85 · 01/10/2018 20:20

Imo eating small items and every so often makes me more hungry.

You should be eating a large breakfast, then that'll tie you through until lunch at 12/1 , maybe another snack around 3 then dinner at 6.

A banana and almond shake is way too little to be having for breakfast.

Bimgy85 · 01/10/2018 20:21

What's wrong with having a bigger breakfast instead of a smoothie?...

Hoops , eggs on toast
Porridge with banana (very filling)
Wholemeal toast (2 slices)

If I was having a banana shake and an Apple for my brekkie and snack I'd be absolutely starving all day too

Fatted · 01/10/2018 20:25

You need to eat proper food for a start! A protein shake isn't going keep you full for long. If you do go to slimming world you will learn about the types of foods to eat more of. It's basically just healthy eating.

When I did shifts I used to eat 4 meals a day and lost weight. Because I was eating food that kept me fuller for longer.

uppitydoodah · 01/10/2018 20:27

Definitely not pregnant!
Had a period 2 weeks ago and DH working away since!!!
Protein shake and almond butter and banana combo started when I was doing a high protein diet and struggled eating enough protein. Plus it has a good macro %, so protein, good fats, correct amount of carbs etc.
It’s just stuck because it’s easy to make at 6am and generally would keep me full up for a few hours, although that’s not working lately.
Maybe I’ll try a small wholemeal toast and scrambled egg tomorrow, although I’ll have to get up 15 mins earlier and I’m shit at early starts!
Maybe time for a diet mix up!

The times I’ve been eat-the-whole-house starving have been early pregnancy, breastfeeding before baby started eating food as well, and when I’m premenstrual. I think it can be hormonal.

I think I have my most calorie-dense meal at breakfast (also around 6:30am on work days) and that does seem to help - do oats and homemade granola and dried fruit and natural yoghurt and a grated apple and chia seeds and toasted almonds and hazelnuts, and put it in my fitness pal once and nearly had a heart attack! However, it does take me through til lunch and make me functional.

My other meals are decent portions but lots of fresh veg. Rarely eat meat (twice a month maybe). Am mostly not ravenous, and am a healthy weight for my frame.

Verbena87 · 01/10/2018 20:30

You can do the oats, yoghurt and grated apple the night before, then just sprinkle on your extras if you’ve an early start - saves crashing around the kitchen like a zombie before the coffee kicks in!

Dacresmallwilly · 01/10/2018 20:30

Does the protein shake have sugar (or some sort of syrup) in it and/or are the bananas you are using very ripe? If so, you could be setting yourself up for a day of sugar lows that will make you starving. I eat full fat Greek yoghurt with berries and a small handful of oats at breakfast and it keeps me going for ages
