How did you decide?

Can anyone point me in the direction of some good resources to help make an informed decision about whether to vaccinate your child?

Interested to hear from parents who haven't, and how they made that decision....

I actually love this thread. What fantastic answers. Agree with all the above. Protect your child by vaccinating wherever possible x

crosser62 · 08/09/2018 20:45

Journo clearly.

RahRahRooRah · 08/09/2018 20:47

I'm mid thirties, my mother decided not to vaccinate me.
I nearly died from measles when I was 8 years old.
Also had to go through whooping cough and rubella etc, (must have had mumps too as I'm now immune, but don't remember it!) All great fun 😳
I was a very ill child, as going through all these illnesses meant I caught every bug going.
She thought I wouldn't come into contact with anything because I wasn't going to nursery. Quite what she thought would happen at school I don't know?!
She also refused for me to have all later school ones too🤔🙄
Please vaccinate your babies and children.
My children are all vaccinated against everything. I've paid for private chicken pox and meningitis ones too.
There are lots of diseases you can't protect against, but there's a lot of very serious ones that you can.

WeakAsIAm · 08/09/2018 20:49

You're joking right???
Wtaf do these parents think when they come up with ridiculous thoughts like these.
We have a health service that offers free FREE vaccinations to all children to stop them getting horrible horrible diseases and causing them to die.
There are parents around the world walking days queuing for even longer in hope they can pay for these options.
Get a fucking grip and get your child vaccinated. No fucking brainer

Ploppymoodypants · 08/09/2018 20:49

Yep I paid private for meningitis as well. As felt desperately sorry for my friend who is a single mother of 3 and simply couldn’t afford it in a million years. (This was when only the under 2’s has the vaccination on NHS and ours were 2.5yrs) So unfair and makes you realise how precious the NHS is.

ivykaty44 · 08/09/2018 20:51

I was looking through a burial register for FH purposes & found a baby buried in Monday died due to scarlet fever, on Wednesday his 2 year old sibling died of the same disease and Friday another sibling aged 4 again from scarlet fever.

Sorry if it harsh but we now have medicine to prevent these disease & That’s always stayed with me, those parents given the choice would have chosen a different course

mydogishot · 08/09/2018 20:52

Easy.

I remember how much it hurt when I nearly died at three from whooping cough. Physical pain struggling to breathe.

My neighbour when her daughter died from measles FIVE years ago. Five..
we live in London.

Rebe90 · 08/09/2018 20:54

All the advances in medicine we have today and some people still don't take advantage of the opportunity to be immune to potentially fatal illnesses. Madness! Why would you put your child at risk of dying/ losing limbs etc from these very serious diseases?! Please vaccinate your child!!

DramaAlpaca · 08/09/2018 20:54

No decision needed surely. Vaccination is what responsible parents do, unless there are sound medical reasons not to. We had to delay DS1's MMR for a very good reason & the minute it was safe to get it done we did.

Ploppymoodypants · 08/09/2018 20:55

Article in the guardian today (can’t link it) about the rise in measles and the Wakefield report.

NotTakenUsername · 08/09/2018 21:08

to help make an informed decision about whether to vaccinate your child

  1. post a question on Mumsnet
  2. read a couple of pages of snarky replies peppered with some hard hitting stories - all favouring vaccines.
  3. wait three more months for your child to be born
  4. wait another 8 weeks
  5. pop to the doc and get the shot.

HTH. Wink

(Genuinely sorry you’ve been so jumped on, of course you are just trying to do best by your baby. Vaccinating is doing best by your baby. Flowers)

PAlm5 · 08/09/2018 21:21

I managed to contract mumps as a child and again a few years ago. I HAD had the vaccinations! Weird eh. Maybe I have a shit immune system?

Thankfully, because of the vaccination it was a very mild form both times. The pain was still awful. I can't imagine what it would've been like had it not been mild and had I not had the vaccination. I would absolutely vaccinate my child because of this and once baby is born in a couple of months I will be!

Benjaminbuttonschild · 08/09/2018 21:23

3) wait three more months for your child to be born

Erm did I miss something? Where did op say she was 6 months pregnant?

Hayles88 · 08/09/2018 21:24

Because I'm not a shit parent and I love, care for and want my child to be healthy.

NotTakenUsername · 08/09/2018 21:31

Benjaminbuttonschild Seemed like such a goofy thread I did an advance search and turns out op is just trying her best and wanting to be prepared. Can’t fault her.

Benjaminbuttonschild · 08/09/2018 21:35

Ah I see NotTakenUsername, I wrongly assumed it was some journo bait.

Ploppymoodypants · 08/09/2018 21:39

I do too actually. Assumed it was a journalist that it. Sorry if I jumped on you OP. Please vaccinate your baby, imagine how you would feel if he caught one of these dreadful illnesses. I promise you, if he did, there is nothing you wouldn’t do, to make him better.

el332 · 09/09/2018 01:08

Thank you for all of your responses - after a conversation with a friend the other day I was just interested to see whether there were many people who did choose not to vaccinate their children.

I do plan on having my pregnancy vaccinations as well as having my baby vaccinated.

All my own vaccinations have always been kept up to date too.

I understand that there is a huge amount of emotion attached to this topic and just wanted to see whether there was a mixed response or not.

I do appreciate everyone who took the tom to respond.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is a good place to start.

Sharkwithknees · 09/09/2018 01:15

A) Are you a stupid, ignorant twat? Consider not vaccinating!

B) are you informed, non-stupid and wish your child to live a healthy life, as well as their peers? Vaccinate!

Seriously, it's not rocket science Hmm

flirtygirl · 10/09/2018 13:08

All of these responses would make me not vaccinate. The op asked a question, not to be jumped on by sarky rude responses.

butlerswharf · 10/09/2018 13:14

I don't want my child to suffer or die unnecessarily from those diseases and so I vaccinated her. Pretty simple decision.

TooTrueToBeGood · 10/09/2018 13:17

I understand that there is a huge amount of emotion attached to this topic and just wanted to see whether there was a mixed response or not.

There's a huge amount of emotion attached to chemtrails, the Illuminati, flat earth and lizard shape-shifters running the world. High emotion does not equal high intelligence, often quite the opposite.

To answer your original question, I trusted the professional advice of my doctor and NHS guidance.

tiggykate · 10/09/2018 13:19

If you’re unsure ask a medical professional if they’ve vaccinated their child(ren). I know dozens of medics and they have all vaccinated their children without delay, everything in the medical literature shows that the massive benefits of vaccination outweigh the very small risks for healthy children,

happymummy12345 · 10/09/2018 13:22

I'm not sure how it's a question? For us it never ever was. Would never not vaccinate.
