RLS (restless leg syndrome) Anyone ever heard of it?????

My dh and I have BOTH been diagnosed with it! Except My dh has it in his arm and I have it in my back. Its extremely rare apparently, yet me and dh have it! Strange!

To me it feels like my nerves are jumping around between my shoulder blades. Its an uncomfortable feeling and I get very restless and cant stay still. I mainly get it at night.

My dh had a shoulder op about 5 years ago and doc thinks it could be something to do with it. He is very jumpy when he gets it and his arm goes into spasms.

Just wondered if anyone has this or knows anything about it???????

My MIL had it in her legs but dont know much about it sorry! She suffered at night too!

Biglips · 07/06/2007 08:22

yes my dp got it too. he keep me awake at nights

indiasmum · 07/06/2007 08:27

yes i get it in my legs. normally when i'm overtired. at night. its really annoying. it feels like my legs want to run and my body wants to sleep. drives dh mad, fortunately i dont get it as often as i used to. am surprised you say its rare. i have heard its very common. apparently putting warm wet flannels on the area can help.

Berrie · 07/06/2007 08:30

My Mum suffered for years. I belive it was much improved by taking iron supplements. Have certainly not heard her complaining about it for a long time. Would ask her for you but she has the hump with me at the moment!

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 08:37

I only thought it was rare cos doc said. I dont really know that much about it.

My dh takes iron suppliments which helps sometimes, but it comes back as soon as he stops. I cant take iron suppliments as i get very 'blocked' and i have awful pain with it, so much so that I faint.

Berrie, when your on talking terms with your mum again please aske her for me, im loosing so much sleep and its pissing me off! (excuse my language but it really is driving me nuts)

Do you know what causes it??

sorry dionne I've no idea, I just remember she used to have to cycle her legs in the air to try and get rid of it.

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 08:44

Hmm, maybe I should try and cycle my shoulder baldes somehow!! lol

it is such a strange feeling, hard to explain. But im glad that other people have it (sorry) so they know what I mean

IT is fairly common but mainly in men of a certain age. Howeer many woman do suffer from it as well. As others have suggested iron is a useful supplement.

There other treatments available (L-Dopa) but consider this a last resort.

Berrie · 07/06/2007 08:46

Must be terrible. At least you know that a sleepless baby will eventually let you sleep. Seems odd that you both have it. I wonder if it's something in your diet or something you're exposed to?

Berrie · 07/06/2007 08:48

Could you eat rich food instead?

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 09:13

Im a bit of a fussy eater!!

can you give me some examples.......

InternationalMouseOfMystery · 07/06/2007 09:14

have it bad atm (am 33wks pg)

tonic water and bananas, that's what everyone keeps telling me

3littlefrogs · 07/06/2007 09:14

You could try a fairly low dose iron supplement from the health food shop such as floradix (sp?). Might help the RLS if you took it regularly, and cut out tea and coffee and took some vitamin c with it. If you eat an orange with every dose, that takes care of the Vit. C and reduces the chances of getting constipated.

A small alcoholic "nightcap" - (drop of brandy or similar) will dilate the capillaries and improve circulation in the extremeties, that might help too.

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 09:16

oh, cool. Thank you. That is really interesting! But I LOVE my tea!!!
Can I still drink tea but just cut down?

OP posts:
3littlefrogs · 07/06/2007 09:16

Tonic water is for cramp rather than RLS - it is the quinine it contains that works. Ditto bananas and potassium.

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 09:17

are you a medical professional 3littlefrogs?

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 09:19

I will get the iron suppliment and vitamin C today that you suggested.

The only alcohol I like is wine or baileys. Is that any good???

3littlefrogs · 07/06/2007 09:19

Sorry X posts - you can just cut down on the tea, and don't drink it with meals or when you actually take the iron supplement. Have the iron at a different time of day from the tea IYSWIM. Also, massaging the relevant bit of your body before you go to bed will help the circulation .

3littlefrogs · 07/06/2007 09:20

I am a nurse - used to be a midwife, not practising now - had to get a job with child friendly hours.

Berrie · 07/06/2007 09:21

oops meant to type iron rich food, not rich food!

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 09:23

Ok, thank you. I will cut down my tea then, and take my suppliments.

What kind of diet would you recommend? I am really fussy with food. Not very exotic and noot keen on veg! (thats probably why I get it!)

InternationalMouseOfMystery · 07/06/2007 09:23

yes indeed you are right, am confusing my pregnancy ailments

interestingly it hasn't been as bad the last week or so, which has coincided with me starting to take spatone sachets (am a little anaemic)

3littlefrogs · 07/06/2007 09:23

Sorry -just reread my posts and it looks a bit bossy - it's just that I am multitasking and have to go to work in a minute. My family tell me I am far too accustomed to telling people what to do . Goes with being a grumpy old woman as well as a very old nurse.

dionnelorraine · 07/06/2007 09:24

Dont be silly 3littlefrogs. I really appreciate your help, cos I need it!

Thank you!
