I posted a while back and gp said it was growing pains, but i'm worried it could be something worse sometimes he can't put any weight on his left leg for up to an hour after he's woken from a nap and he can be awake screaming for up to an hour a time during the night.

Its not just crying he's sometimes sick with the pain I just don't know what to do for him

He's 2.5

Doctor, definitely.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/06/2007 20:28

Is he extremely flexible during the day? I had something very similar when I was a kid and I'm hypermobile - my joints are very fluid and often when I'm sleeping I will dislocate my ankles/knees and its bloody agony when you wake up and you can't put weight on it till you've got it back in.

If your GP is not helpful - try and osteopath, they can assess the problem and actually I've recently had treatment and it's much, much better.

SauerKraut · 05/06/2007 20:28

If he has had a temperature, ask about the possibility of bone infection.

Wolfgirl · 05/06/2007 20:28

sounds like poor circulation. def get him checked out hun. poor lamb. xx

alibobins · 05/06/2007 20:34

He's a very bouncy active little boy when he's not like this

He's been quite ill a few times recently but this has been going on for a while.

I'm at the gp tomorrow anyway for his asthma checkup so will mention it again. I have just got a horrible feeling about it I just hope its nothing

my friends son was like this, couldnt put weight on it etc, had xrays done privately cause doctor said it was growing pains.xrays showed up nothing and turned out gp was right! he eventually grew out of it. It was heartbreaking at the time though.

Boco · 05/06/2007 20:46

The only thing that came to mind was cramp? I went through a phase of getting really bad cramp at night when i was little - i still remember the pain, it was awful. My mum started making me drink awful concoctions of brewers yeast and other wierdy things and it stopped after a couple of months i think.

Definitely get it checked out though.

I still have similar now - it is worse when it has been warm during the day and then the temp drops a lot at night, or in cold damp weather.

Warmth and massaging it always helped (with calpol), a warm bath is one of the best things.

Its horrible - as he gets older you can get him to focus on staying really still and breathing calmly, but at 2.5 its hard. Putting your hands on his leg and breathing calmly for him can often help.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/06/2007 20:57

My mum used to get me to tell her on a scale of one to ten how much it hurt and then she'd stroke my head or sing to me and ask me again till it went down a bit and carry on till I forgot it hurt.

Of course these days we have Calpol

divastrop · 05/06/2007 21:01

my ds2(nearly 4)has been getting simialr pains on and off for about a year.the doctor sent him for blood tests which came back fine so she said it was growing pains.

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:03

was about to post on this for my dd!!

she's like this & I'll be taking her to the doc tomorrow - will update.

alibobins · 05/06/2007 21:12

maisym how old is you dd?

Its so hard seeing them in pain all i can get out of him is its usually his left leg and either his knee or foot that is hurting.

Last night he wouldn't even settle in my bed he thrashes around the bed in pain tries to get up but obviousley can't.

I feel a bit sick with worry could it be anything more sinister or am i being silly

Ds is like this, has been since he was about 18mths old.

He cries so much that i cannot give him any meds orally as he brings them straight back up. We took him to the gp and she examined him very well, watched him walk etc and said that she was sure it was either growing pains or cramps and to make sure he had a good diet. She also gave us ibuprofen gel to use on his legs if he wakes in the night, but you can only use a tiny tiny amount and it doesn't always work.

I am almost 100% he has the same thing i used to get. From when i was about 5 i can remember getting pains in my legs, they would ache from my feet up to my knee, with my knees being the worst, and i could get it in one or both legs, and i used to wrap my leg in my dressing gown and stuff it down the side of my matress and eventually the pain would go. I am positive this is what ds has.

I think it is restless leg syndrome, and i googled it once and a study was done in america that showed that it can run in families, particularly when the mother of the child has had it.

Tbh i don't think there is alot you can do, but i know ds always gets it if he does certain things like, have socks on all day and then have an hour of running around bare foot. Sounds odd but can garuntee then that on the night he will have restless, painful legs. Oh and ds now wears socks to bed every night which helps.

If he wakes with it, i put him in with me and i have to rub or hold his legs very tightly before he can drop off again.

NuttyMuffins · 05/06/2007 21:19

Also meant to add, that it seems to have gotten less frequent as he has got older, he is 4 now.

Enid · 05/06/2007 21:21

strangely dd1s best friend has had periods of this since she was tiny (she is 7 now)

she had tests done today (x rays)

will let you know

alibobins · 05/06/2007 21:45

alib - my dd is 6.

for a week she's being saying how much her right leg hurts at the top & today couldn't seem to walk apart from slowly. I almost took her to a&e but got an appointment for tomorrow pm. SHe says nothing has happened and sometimes is running around & other times says it hurts. It's a mystery.

I hope things go ok with you xxx

BaffledByBabyTights · 05/06/2007 23:06

I started a thread on this about 2 months ago for my ds who is 3 - most posters recommended nurofen rather than calpol (I guess cos it's anti inflammatory) and massage, which I do with body shop peppermint footcream, and it sorts him out really quickly. Poor ds though - I remember them myself and they are NOT pleasant....

twinniemum · 06/06/2007 19:23

ok this is really weird..... my dt woke up screaming that his leg hurt this morning and has been limping all day, no bruises and he doesnt want to put any weight on it. I know he hasnt hurt it. I feel like I've jinxed him now!
