Burn advice (Sorry grim picture!)

Skinnydecafflatte · 24/08/2018 21:23

Hi, I burnt my lower arm on a gas oven yesterday and immediately it pulled the skin off which is now gathered at the top side in this pic. I cooled it down straight after and thankfully it’s not too uncomfortable. Was away at a campsite so no first aid but covered it in clingfilm. Am now home and wondered what the best thing to do is? Should I leave it uncovered to dry out? Or cover it and if so what with, a bandage or more clingfilm? The wound is probably about 6cm long and 1cm wide. Thanks in advance

Ouch !! That looks quite a deep burn , does it hurt ? Sounds a daft question but very deep burns don't always hurt , in which case I'd get it looked at by a doctor.

PavlovaFaith · 24/08/2018 21:28

Aloe Vera!

gamerchick · 24/08/2018 21:30

That needs medical attention. The fact it's not too uncomfortable is concerning in itself.

Oddcat · 24/08/2018 21:32

I agree Gamer a superficial burn is normally very sore .

InfiniteCurve · 24/08/2018 21:35

That's a big burn.
What I would do is ring 111 or your local on-call service and actually get some advice from a medically qualified person.Or at the very least a person with access to medically qualified people.
Though it's a good picture and there are medically qualified people on here too......

Mabelface · 24/08/2018 21:36

That needs medical attention.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2018 21:37

You need that looking at by a medical professional. A walk in centre would be a good idea.

Skinnydecafflatte · 24/08/2018 21:38

I was assuming that the fact it doesn’t hurt was a good thing? Do you think I should take a trip to minor injury clinic in the morning then? I’m quite clumsy and I don’t like seeking medical help unnecessarily.
For now though should I leave it uncovered or covered?

that looks pretty serious tbh and the fact that it doesn't hurt means that it's a deep burn.
you need to get it seen urgently to prevent infection and for regular woundcare to minimise scarring.

minor injuries tonight and then wound nurse at the gp for the forseeable

gamerchick · 24/08/2018 21:42

The less it hurts the more layers of skin that have been burnt. The not hurting is your nerve endings being damaged so they don't signal your brain.

You're at risk of infection and you need to get it looked at. You aren't wasting anyone's time.

bluerunningshoes · 24/08/2018 21:43

DON'T PUT ANYTHING ON IT. NO SNAKEOIL ALOE VERA

delphguelph · 24/08/2018 21:43

Get it looked at.

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2018 21:44

That will need proper dressing as son as possible. You should have sought medical attention at the time.

Don’t put aloe vera or anything else on it.

PotteringAlong · 24/08/2018 21:45

Definitely medical treatment! If that doesn’t hurt like buggery you’re in trouble

LanaorAna2 · 24/08/2018 21:47

Give it a little wash with something antibacterial, dry it gently, and cover lightly with clingfilm. Keep it soft and covered, it will heal faster. Watch out that the red edges don't spread.

Wolfiefan · 24/08/2018 21:48

If that doesn't hurt it is an indication that you've burnt through more than superficial layers. Medical treatment needed ASAP.

bluerunningshoes · 24/08/2018 21:48

sorry for shouting: DON'T PUT ANYTHING ON IT

LanaorAna2 · 24/08/2018 21:48

6cm is quite long. Doc on Monday.

gamerchick · 24/08/2018 21:48

To be fair aloe Vera is for taking the pain out of a burn. I wouldn't using it on that though.

Oddcat · 24/08/2018 21:48

I would go to A&E ( I work there and don't say that for any old ailment)

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2018 21:49

6cm is quite long. Doc on Monday.

No, that’s a walk in centre job much sooner than Monday.

Skinnydecafflatte · 24/08/2018 21:49

Ok, thanks folks. I hate to be ‘one of those’ but minor injuries is now closed, only just! Should have asked an hour ago 🙄 Opens at 8am tomorrow so will head down then.

One thing you can do in the meantime is to put a blister plaster on the burn.
The lack of pain is worrying and could indicate nerve damage x

PurpleDaisies · 24/08/2018 21:50

If minor injuries is closed, you’d be justified in going to a and e.
