I recieved this email this morning.....

All,

Thanks for your best wishes on my other thread.

Carys was admitted on Thursday morning to the our local Paediatric unit with an unknown viral infection. She was tested and on Thursday evening, we got the bad news that she is RSV Positive. We were told that it was going to a rocky road as this virus is very dangerous for newborns and prems.

Thursday night was ok. She held her own without support. Unfortunately on Friday morning she started deteriorating (as expected) and was placed in a full High Dependency Unit. She was hooked up to every monitor known to man, a drip and a zillion wires and placed in a resuscitair. Yesterday was rocky - her sats were swaying wildly and every slight bit of stress was sending her Heart Rate, Respiration and SATS haywire. Just after lunch DH and I decided to insist on a transfer for her to a Neonatal ICU - unfortunately because of the virus (which is very contagious), we couldn't find a bed anywhere in Cape Town in a PICU/NICU in an isolation ward. It was decided to transfer her to the adult ICU in our local hospital which is where she remains now.

My darling girl is fighting for her life. She is stable but critical. Please mumsnetters, please pray and send all of your best thoughts (I truly believe in being positive) to us.

My life is upside down, my baby is so sick and I am sitting her in the family room in the middle of the night almost too scared to go into the Unit for fear of bad news.

God help us.

I'll try to keep you all updated when I can.

Love dejags

Dejags, my heart was in my mouth when I read this, I had no idea until I opened the emial. I hope with ever single fibre in my body that Carys makes a quick recovery and is able to come home again soon to be with her gorgeous big brother and adoring mum and dad.

I'll be thinking of you all.

Emma.

How's things today Dejags? x

Gingerbear · 06/06/2007 13:57

Oh dejags my darling, I haven't been on MN for a few days, and come to read this awful news.

My prayers are with you all, and hope that Carys continues to be a strong fighter and pull through this. xx

Much love,

GB

dejags · 07/06/2007 06:52

we've been here 7 days today - it feels like a lifetime.

Carys is doing ok. She is still on High Care (am told that she will be demoted to semi-high care at some point today, this means that she will have 2 hourly observations and remain on 24/7 heart and 02 saturation monitor).

It's so slow. They keep trying to wean her off the oxygen but everytime they switch it down her oxygen saturation levels drop. She is also still having physiotherapy and suction four times a day to get rid of the never ending secretions.

The doctors are saying we could be here as long as a month .

so not much to report on - she is improving but incredibly slowly.

slowly slowly then, you must be strong

strong enough for a manly pat on the knee as you know I Don't Do Hugs.

Tiggiwinkle · 07/06/2007 08:15

Hang on in there dejags! At least things are going the right way-I am sure they will continue to do so. xx

FoghornLeghorn · 07/06/2007 08:27

Dejags, I have only just seen this somehow.
So sorry to hear that little Carys is poorly but hopefully she is on the up now, things certainly sound better.

Thinking of you and yours

tortoiseSHELL · 07/06/2007 08:47

Sorry it's going so slowly dejags, but at least you're going in the right direction. Lots more positive thoughts for you. x

Budababe · 07/06/2007 08:50

Oh God dejags - a month! Poor wee thing. But at least it IS improvement.

Can you cuddle her? If so give her a cuddle for me!

How are the boys?

Wish some of us were closer to you to do something practical. Mind you a trip to Cape Town would be nice. Not sure if DH would go for it though!

Cadmum · 07/06/2007 08:51

Dejags: How very hard for you that it is all going much more slowly than you would like...

Try to maintain your positive outlook as things are improving and she is getting better.

I am sending you virtual positive thoughts and prayers for Carys and your entire family.

lionheart · 07/06/2007 08:57

Dejags, so glad to hear that Carys is improving, albeit slowly.

Sending more positive vibes and wishing you all strength.

Cammelia · 07/06/2007 09:11

I'm still sending prayers and love to Carys, dejags. Keep strong and positive xxxxxx

Chloe55 · 07/06/2007 09:20

Wishing Carys a speedy recovery. Keep your chin up Dejags, the days and nights must be going so slowly for you at the moment but just keep a mental picture of how wonderful life will be like when Carys is back home with you.

Nip · 07/06/2007 09:40

Thinking of you dejags, your family and precious DD.

Many positive thoughts for you x x x

BrothelSprouts · 07/06/2007 09:43

Stay strong, dejags.
Keep posting.
Best wishes to you all.

Elibean · 07/06/2007 10:28

((Dejags))

Once again, you are taking me back: this time, to the day a nice senior registrar saw me looking utterly miserable (we'd been in HDU just under a week) and said 'she WILL get better, you know, but it IS like watching paint dry sometimes with bronchiolitic babies getting well...'.

She was so right!

I hope and imagine the doctors are giving you the worst case scenario, so as not to get your hopes up. I do remember room-mates of Mischa's in HDU having the same scenario - off a couple of hours, then sats dropping, back on. One little girl took a week longer to get well, but once she was out of HDU she got better very fast. Mischa was heavier than your LO, same age, but a 38 weeker who somehow managed to gain weight on a drip so I am sure that speeded things up for her. Maybe Carys just needs a little longer because of her lower birth weight.

Its all very very hard, and , and tiring, and worrying - and I found it hard to trust that my LO wasn't going to backslide for a while, after all the fear and panic of the worst days. But they very very very rarely do. We're all thinking of you and Carys, and the rest of your family, and sending lots of love - hang in there, and hope the paint dries a little quicker each day. xxxx

Countingthegreyhairs · 07/06/2007 10:30

Will say a prayer and light a candle for Carys and you and all your family today Dejags xx

largeginandtonic · 10/06/2007 16:38

Good grief Dejags i have just seen this. I wish i had seen it before, both my DTS had this and my third DS.

It was so scary and the twins were premmie babies too. One of them was ventilated for 4 days too, they all recovered well.

I really hope little Carys is back home with you soon xxxxx

elsieanjoanne · 10/06/2007 16:54
